ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 26, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other experiences that I have made during my time in the States. Let me know what YOU would like to hear about in the comments below. DANKE :)

Thank you guys again for 100k subscribers! :) I hope you enjoy this video. I have SO MUCH extra material (questions that I cut out and just follow up conversations with Katie that we had about the topics) so I was wondering if you guys would be interested in seeing that in a separate video sometime? Let me know what you think :) Also, if you stay tuned until the end you'll catch a sunset tour of the University of Cincinnati campus! And I just added subtitles for the whole video, in case anyone has trouble hearing what we're saying outside/in noisy parts.

I have watched your videos for at least 2 or 3 years now. Congratulations on reaching the 100k subscribers' goal. That's quite an accomplishment. I lived in Germany (Stuttgart area) for 6 months in the 70's on a business assignment with IBM, so got to explore most of southern Germany on weekends. I've also given several technical presentations in Cincinatti in the 80's, so enjoyed revisiting that area again. I especially like your views on the cultural differences between our 2 countries. This video was especially nice for the on-location views and your more casual approach. Even the wind blowing your hair made it more natural. Thanks for another excellent video.

You're doing great public relations for the city of Cincinnati! They should be sponsoring your videos. For a dialect that's really difficult to understand, you should visit the Chesapeake region of Maryland and Virginia, or specifically Tangier Island, Virginia. Chincoteague and Assateague Islands have wild ponies that live on the beach, and some of the local people there speak with a really fascinating accent that's difficult to understand; it sounds something like a blend of an archaic British accent, Southeastern U.S. and New England.

I think the paper plates for eating may be a city or suburbs thing, maybe a faster lifestyle. I live in northern Ohio and I don't recall any family or friends using them unless it was a cookout. I have to hand wash my dishes and the thought of using paper plates never crossed my mind. My mom would also have my hide if she found out that I used paper plates in my own house. Haha. I agree with you about the pace in grocery stores. We are as slow as molasses. Even worse is that many people get tunnel vision and aren't aware of their surroundings. I'm a fast walker myself and I try to get in and out as fast as possible. Keep up the good work. I've been a follower for a few months now and I like hearing about the culture and seeing the differences from your point of view. One of the biggest flaws we have as Americans is that we think we're alone in this world. Your views are an opportunity for us to see things from a different perspective.
@frankwaechter8676

@Hauke Holst That's a strictly logical point of view, but the general usage of the word refers to US citizens and you can't just call that "wrong". Also, this debate is fruitless because you won't change general use on KZfaq. Actually when people speak of the inhabitants of the continent they usually speak of North Americans or South Americans.

I so agree with how long it takes to get in and out of a grocery store. Also, for some reason, people would rather wait in line even if the self-checkout is available. This is fine by me, cause I'll swoop into the self-checkout and be in and out in less than 5 minutes! If I had to guess why it takes so long for the average American to shop, I would say it's due to the variety of the same product. I find myself spending extra time looking for the best deal (what's on sale, club card price vs sale price, price per oz, etc). From what I've seen, there's obviously variety in German stores but not to the extent of what you'd find in America.

St Louis had similar large German neighborhood in north city called “Baden.” St Louisans pronounced it like bay-den. Multiple German language newspapers, schools, and churches. Like Cincinnati it all went away during WWI.

Feli, do you know about the "PA Dutch"? Those are descendants from German expats in Pennsylvania, mostly from the Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland area, and they actually still speak a language that's mostly based on the German dialects from these areas, with a simplified ("Americanized") grammar and a few English words mixed in. It's really funny, and I think you should check that out. The fact that it's called "Dutch" is due to a translation error, it has nothing to do with the Netherlands, but they also call it "Deitsch", which is again very close to Deutsch :-) - Douglas Madenford has a KZfaq channel where he introduces the language and the culture and he actually does quite a good job presenting it!

Don't be afraid to make big plans. The American way is to be intensely optomistic. If you want to do an audiobook of modern German children's stories translated into English, go for it!!! You can do it if you work hard.
