One of the things that made this show so great was how seamlessly the events of previous episodes formed part of your understanding of the universe. Right here they combined the knowledge they gained in one episode: that a wormhole connection can jump between Stargates when the outgoing one receives a power surge, with the knowledge from another unrelated episode: that a wormhole can be sustained indefinitely when approaching the event horizon of a black hole.

I really liked how they handled the technology in general in Stargate. Almost every bit of interesting Goa'uld, Ancient and Asgard tech that they came across was incorporated somehow into later episodes, and I don't remember ever having that feeling of 'why don't they just use X from episode Y' that you usually get from series that are heavy on the technobabble. Sure it's all essentially space magic, but it all runs on an amazingly consistent internal logic - the black hole jump from this episode, using the gate 'whoosh' to destroy things in general, using the energy beam from ring platforms to tunnel and all the mileage they got out of naquadah in all its forms. Plus, speaking of naquadah, the curve of humanity's tech level going from real 20th century stuff to intergalactic battlecruisers is my favourite overtly sci-fi thing from any TV show ever made.

I remember seeing this episode on TV for the first time. At the time, I'd been keeping up with SG1 since season 3, and Atlantis from the beginning, and so had most of my family. There was a very heavy investment by all of us in the story and the characters. Like, to the point of having been genuinely shocked after the supergate battle at the end of season 9. Seeing this unfold, obviously we expected the plan would work, but invested as we are in the fights against the Ori and the wraith, that moment was an intense one. There was cheering of "BOOOM! Got the hive!" and "Okay, get outta there, Teal'c!" "Ooohf, hit right on the bow! ...How's it taking that?! Dang!" "Oh wait, no way! NO Way!!" It was a day of celebration. As Teal'c said, today we have achieved a great victory.

You see the wormhole jumping and you get to think "Oh, it's working, the gate's opening. ...Wait a sec, that Ori ship is right in front of... Holy heck yes." I hate how they heavily relied on plot devices, the gates ALWAYS jumps to the one they want. Theres a thousand gates between the supergate, chances are that it would have jumped to a different gate all together outside the milky way. That and how they had recap episodes every 20 episodes. Season 1 episode 20...telling us what we just watched thanks for wasting my time when I could have watched a KZfaq esk video to summarize them, sorry sarcasm, its stupid. But still one of the best original franchises
@Tank50us

@@jamesmeppler6375 To be fair, recap episodes are fine when it'd been 20 weeks since you events in Season # Ep1, and the recap episodes are also good for bringing new watchers up to speed if they join late in a season. Obviously they don't work as well when on a streaming service or on DVD, but at least the producers took some effort and made sure the episodes fit within the overall story, rather than being pocket episodes. As for the gate jumping thing.... eh... yeah, I can give ya part of that, because in theory the wormhole should have jumped to another gate that's of the same size, however with them pumping that much power through the gate, it may have been enough to get around that issue. Remember, these are the people who like to tinker with their home gate, and how many issues has *that* caused?

You know rewatching this series again, I realize something, what if the reason all those times SG-1 did crazy sh** and got out of it alive was the Ancients? I know the ancients have rules not to interfere with the existence of the lower planes, but they've also collectively learned how to bend the rules. What if they were that mysterious missing element that made things work and that explains why all the seemingly impossible things SG-1 does, where they have that level of luck works because the ancients pushed it over the line. Think of the K'tau Sun incident, humans had to figure out what the problem was, after they of course figured out HOW they caused it in the first place, they figured out a solution and they even provided the means to solve it, the question was getting it there. After the destruction of the rocket, they try the 1% chance of dropping the element into the sun and thus fixing things. Basically humanity got it 99% of the way there, meaning if things go right, they would have solved it on their own. So what if the ancients just made sure the element dropped into the star, thus saving the K'tau people and SG-1's reputation. Like all those other times, of every lucky shot, or conveniently placed explosive, the ancients may have planted the idea in Carter's head to place that explosive you're wanting to place, in the right spot. Many times Carter has guessed and it's almost always been right, even Carter herself admits in one episode, that even though she's highly highly educated, SG-1 had made a habit of making an educated guess, but a guess none the less and being right. The ancients have always been there, they may have even inspired Daniel to unlock the stargate in the first place. My point is, this could explain why some of the more wackier guesses have just been right. basically the ancients are stargate's in-universe excuse for plot armor.
@FormerBunsenBurner
@FormerBunsenBurner Жыл бұрын
It's an interesting idea, but I'm not fond of this theory. If it's true, it means that almost everything that happens in Stargate wasn't because our heroes are just _that_ good, but because the gods (You will never convince me the Ancients and the Ori are not gods) willed it to happens. It takes away from all the biggest achievements by the Humans, and make it seem like humans were destined to become the dominant race in the galaxy.
@YouthRightsRadical
@YouthRightsRadical Жыл бұрын
@@FormerBunsenBurner Personally, I rather like the idea that SG1's plot armor isn't the Ancients as a whole, but Daniel Jackson in particular. The one who went back in time and fought Ra. We never did get confirmation about what happened to him after that, so I like to think he ascended, learned to play the rules a little better than he did during his previous ascensions, and has been subtly helping out his friends ever since. On a slightly related note, it's neat to rewatch the original movie with the idea that Ra recognized Daniel from that fight and he put him in the Sarcophagus because he didn't trust him to stay dead.

To do this they needed to send a blast of energy through the gate that would cause the wormhole to jump. This had happened previously to SG1, which is how they discovered the second Earth Stargate burried in Antarctica.

Yup. The wraith wanted to get to earth but they could have planted the directions to the Ori galaxy which was also full of humans. Once the humans were fed upon and numbers reduced the power of the Ori would also diminish. It would be a dick move but...........

but the fact is, they made these bombs that they tought it can destroy the stargates, yet they detonate 2 at maximum power, + the wraith ship, and it still survived. thats my main point.
@builder396
@builder396 6 жыл бұрын
I assume that was because the warheads and wraith ship were somewhat further away than if they had beamed the warheads directly on top of the gate, so the blast was less severe. Also, due to the warheads causing the wraith ship to go off as a slightly delayed secondary explosion, the same amount of energy is distributed over a longer period of time, also reducing the destructive force without reducing the amount of energy the gate receives for the jump. Also its called a "Attero device". There was also that one stargate in SGU that was hit by weapons fire, but SGU stargates were basically made in china. Another gate had a Alkesh crash into it, too, but afaik that only destroyed the DHD. Also, the time McKay destroyed 5/6 of a solar system I imagine the gate didnt survive that either.

They should have gathered the ori ship debris and try to reverse engineer something
@theuncalledfor
@theuncalledfor 4 жыл бұрын
Do I Ori ships even have tech that can be reverse engineered? The "hearts" have to be ignited by a Prior, implying they make some use of ascended beings and their power. Which in turn implies that large parts of Ori ship tech might be made entirely out of energy - which disappears when power is cut. This could be a deliberate measure to prevent reverse engineering. A ship would have to be captured completely intact to even get a chance at reverse engineering, and even that chance would require intricate knowledge of ascended energy systems.

One of the big things about Stargate was continuity. If they did something in one episode... got something, learned something, fought something... that "lore" would be in there and likely brought back. The 304 battlecruisers were built on that. every part, every alloy, engines... you could trace back to another episode where that was used.

@@jonathanc5625 yep, the F-301 and BC-304's were not just "human built". The ore was mined by the Unas, the engines came with help from the Serrakin, the power generators came from Orbanians, rings tech came from ancients technically... Then the azguard upgrades.

There might be a plot hole here. I don't think they necessarily needed to do a 'jump'. As long as the regular Stargate was active, no one could have dialed the supergate since they were in close proximity. And the regular Stargate would have stayed active perpetually since the dialing gate was powered by a black hole.
