Жыл бұрынThe MSI Raider GE78HX replaces the GE77HX from last year, upgrading the CPU to the i9 13980HX and the GPU to either the RTX 4080 or RTX 4090.
My review unit is from Hidevolution and this provides an insight into the thermal performance, fan noise, speakers, display quality, benchmarks, battery life and upgradability.
The next video will compare it more with the outgoing GE77HX which can be had for about half the price of this GE78HX.

Thanks! Gigabyte is supposed to be sending me the 17x. I would have bought it but I think the CPU only has a PL1 of 70w. I'm also looking at the Tracer VII at Cyberpowerpc. They have $100 off sale in March plus a revolving offer which includes another $50 off. Same as the mech 17 GP, same water cooler. Just doesn't have the Prema bios. The 16" has the membrane keyboard though but they are $600 cheaper than Eluktronics. Been selling out fast though.

@Killernp1 thanks for the sub! Yes, I started off with an Xbox but when I got addicted to a game my wife hid the CD. So I built a desktop to play it and since then I have been hooked. I have the Steam Deck too, have yet to open it up though. Did you see the portable gaming review my colleague did a few videos back?

Thanks Chris! I liked the keyboard, much the same as the GE77HX. Layout a bit different. Touchpad is moved further to the right though which I didn't like.

Hello Did I understand correctly that there are seals put on by MSI on the screws at the bottom of the housing and you can't change the memory without losing the warranty? Do you still experience stuttering after updating your drivers?

@Anthon Bakkalian I'm loading games on it now. At least out the box they didn't limit the CPU to 55W, I was getting about 140W in CBR23.

Hey stephen, excellent video as always. Could you test if propping up the laptop makes any difference? I personally tested it on my ideapad 3 with a 4600h and 1650 and there was a 5-10 degree drop on the GPU and CPU. Might help here for sure, provided MSI hasn't blocked any vents.

@@OWNORDISOWN Thanks Stephen! I have tested it on my legion y520 with a 1050 that was heavily OC'd and my ideapad 3 with a 1650. I have seen significant temp reductions in the magnitude of 5 to 10 degrees on the GPU and CPU respectively. I believe this almost negates the use of cooling pads.

@@siyzerix Hello. How would you prop it up without a cooling pad? I ask because the gt78hx bottom has exhaust port only on the upper side so anything that isn't cooling pad could obstruct those ports, right?

Very Good comparison. I'd like to understand if there could be room for improvement for the temperatures, without necessarily having to change the thermal pose. For example by doing a bit of undervolt to the processor...

Yes, you can undervolt. I'll be showing all the pertinent advanced BIOS settings in the follow up video. You can also do an IMON tweak to trick the CPU into using more watts, allowing I have only tested that on my GE77HX. You can lower the PL1 too.

I know, Bios on MSI Notebooks is currently the one that offers the most tweakable options, basically like BIOS on a high-end desktop motherboard. I would be grateful if you would be willing to show how the undervolt can improve the overall temperatures on this Notebook (only if obviously a result is achieved that effectively justifies this modification). Could you also kindly tell if you have experienced any coil whine on your unit?

@Luca Magni Hidevolution wanted it back fast, so I shipped it back yesterday. I didn't get chance to do the undervolt but do show the option in the BIOS. I spent a good amount of time on that audio crackling and the initial stutters. The trackpad position put me off a bit , its moved to the center of the deck so is moved to the right vs the GE77HX, I kept on missing it in the dark, lol.

@@OWNORDISOWN Ah okay, I understand. Alright, it's always good to double-check the list of available options! How about the presence of any noise caused by electronic components of the motherboard (coil whine)? On Notebooks with such an important price, and with such sought-after features, I'm always very careful, and unfortunately Asus is the one that has always disappointed me from this point of view. Have you noticed this flaw on this MSI?

@Luca Magni sorry, I forgot to answer you on that. I actually mentioned it on the video. There was no whine, hum or any noise that should not be there apart from the audio crackling . That was a strange one and Hidevolution didn't have an answer for it. The fans didn't pulse up and down, I would say they were better than my GE77HX as those can have a tendency to ramp up fast and then go down . On the GE77HX I can feel the fan vibrate under the AWSD keys, I couldn't here.

You think that the CPU is causing the stuttering and fps dips? Jarrod tested a 4070 laptop with an HX CPU and a few games were performing way worse with 1% lows than against a 3070Ti i7 127000H in one of his videos. I know the 4070 is a marginal at best upgrade a 3070Ti, but some of 1% lows in a few games with the HX CPU definitely made it seem like the CPU was part of the cause. Remember him saying it also happened in another HX CPU he tested with those specific games even when paired with a 4080/4090. Also makes me wonder if disabling some of the E cores in the BIOS would help.

I had the same issue on the Alienware m16. Disabling 6 ecores solved it. I thought it was the cause here at first but a day or so later it resolved itself. There are definitely issues with these new machines...

i had a msi raider before but i had some issue with a broken hinge and the sockets of some heavily used keys on the keyboard broke after 1 year use already. also opening the chassis was always a struggle to not damage anything. cost me some of these little plastic clips everytime i opened the chassis that keep the gaps tight. this generation im trying alienware m18

Thanks! The strix 18 over at best buy has mixed reviews. Coil whine, and backlight bleed seem to be the main thing. They have a good return policy though and I do like having an 18" screen. I liked that on the Alienware m18..

@@OWNORDISOWN I think 4080 is the sweet spot sir. The 4090 just runs too hot pair that up with a incoolable i9 13th gen and that's a bad combo. The 4080 can pretty much run everything at 1440p resolution too.

It was a review unit so I sent it back. Hidevolution said a speaker was blown but I think that was BS as it also happened with headphones. Someone else had the issue to I recall. It was very strange.

What’s the built quality like? Is it all metal or plastic? Ge67hx used to have oled, does ge68hx have oled too?

It's good. Metal lid and deck. Underneath is plastic. No OLED unfortunately on the GE78HX. No OLED on the GE68HX either because there isn't a 16" 16x10 oled panel available as far as I know.

@@Cheese-Head depends on the panel ID. The Alienware m16 panel is BOE0B04 good colour gamut but only 319 nits. Lenovo normally uses a panel that is close to 500 nits but drops off dramatically below 75%. If you find the panel ID you can check to see if it is listed on panelook.com

The pricing on this and the GT77 almost seem like MSI expected all of the manufacturers to price hike RTX 40 machines, but they forecasted badly and got caught pants down. Just doesn't make sense for the GE78 to cost what it does with the 4080, when lacking technology like Advanced Optimus and G-Sync, it just doesn't justify the price for what it is. It's $600-$800 to high. I have been buying MSI since the GT70, but had to go ASUS G18 this time, couldn't pay so much extra to MSI for nothing.

@@OWNORDISOWN I did have coil whine, but it went away completely after about a week of heavy use. Only a small bit of bleed in my top left quadrant that I can only see when booting the computer really. I'm overall loving this machine, absolute shocker to be sold for $2499. I had an MSI GT76 w/ 9700K/2080 die an untimely death a month out of warranty back in early 2021, so I'd been using an emergency ASUS TUF w/ 3050 Ti I had to pick up on the cheap to get me by until RTX 40 dropped. Glad to be back into high-end gaming again.

@@OWNORDISOWN nice, thank you. Well in Europe prices are different - i can get scar 18 with 4090 for around 4200 usd, msi titan with 4080 for 4500 usd(it has 64gb RAM though vs 32 in asus). Both have 2 tb SSDs. And m18 with same specs(4080, 2tb, 64 gb, cherry keyboard) is around 4700 usd. So i kinda doubt i'll be taking an m18 all things considered.

@Dartex wow, that is very expensive for the m18. The 4090 version for me , granted with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD is $3100 after tax with that 10% off. I have 32GB RAM in my GE77HX which I'll swap if I end up keeping it. Interested to see what the 18" screen is like vs my 17.3". I asked Frank Azor a while back if Alienware would make another 18" and he thought i was stupid.

I've noticed on my gt77hx if I use discrete graphics I get stuttering in certain games (red dead redemption 2, forespoken, cyberpunk 2077) but if I use hybrid there is no stuttering. It's been like this since I got the laptop, even after the latest bios and driver updates. It might just be an msi issue.

I didn't see any tearing. Nor do I with my 240 hz GE77HX and that has no Gsync. Perhaps if the frame is higher than 240 ? I didn't see it in Overwatch though

@Benson Harrison the GE78HX has great cooling. Not as good as the Titan though. Only issue inhad was in BF2042 balanced mode auto fan the 4080 hit 87 deg C

You will still get a 9 to 10% boost with the 4090, but it is more expensive of course.

It seems that many 4090\4080 laptops do not have the dsr option in the Nvidia control panel. Do you see this option in your Nvidia control panel?

@@OWNORDISOWN I bought a ge78hx 4090 laptop, and I asked some other people who bought the same model. There is no dsr option in our Nvidia control panel/3dsettings. The laptop gp76 3070 I used before has this option. It seems that this problem will only appear on the 40 series mobile graphics card.

MSI could easily create a sku of this laptop that costs about $600 less. How could they do this? Simple, by giving it 32gb of RAM, 1tb of storage, a lower bin i9(13900hx for e.g). Why didn't they do this? Your guess is as good as mine but I think we know why.

My MSI GE66 has similar audio issues, a lot of people experience audio issues with MSI laptops.

I wonder if E-Sport Games that have higher than 240hz have screen tearing ? Also is there any msi laptop so far had g-sync and what is the reason for not having g-sync it is such an amazing technology for an expensive laptop 🤔 Also it is such a shame they did 12GB 4080 I wonder if there will be a 4080 ti mobile in future with 16Gb ram also Max-P gpus for lower end Mobile Gpu series because I already seen a 4050 with 40w gpu it is terrible if they plan to sell it higher than 3060 mobile then no way people gonna get that for only gimmicks 🤔

I don't recall seeing tearing in Overwatch, I recorded the gameplay footage and will be in the follow up video. It is strange why no Gsync. They must be saving money whilst charging us more...I hate how they are relying on frame generation to boost the lower powered SKUs. I've also found that 1% lows are generally lower on these new laptops vs last gen.

My Lenovo 3080 was around that price in 2021. At this rate 4080 Ti next year will go around $4000 and that's just absurd. :-)

Yeah, it is a shame. I don't know why they didn't use it. It does have a myx switch but you have to restart each time you change GPU

its a nice machine but i really hope this laptop dont stutter becouse i did buy last year a razer blade 14 with a rtx 3070ti and when i have it 1 month and i did play games like forza horizon 5 and copple other games i did get stutters ! not only in games i did have that problem on the desktop home screen as wel its a amd 6900hx but its so crazy it was stardaard windows 11 installed but i did instal windows 10 and update all driver like razer drivers and motherboard etc but that still didnt help do i did sell it on marketplace becouse i search they hole internet and no one have that problem only me so on reddit no peaple only on 5900hx but that was another problem but its crazy no body dont know this problem i buy a laptop for fucking 3800 dollar and that fucking commpany dont even give my money back i did sell it with almost 1300 euro loss so i dont hope i get this problem on this msi if some one knows what i talk about please let me know oke thanks!
