Growing up in the 80's, my parents had green fridge, green counter tops, a plaid green and black couch, and a huge green stove. Eventually in the early 90's everything wore out and they replaced them except for the stove. That gigantic green stove lasted till 2000.

The two colors were Avocado Green and Harvest Gold.

My grandparents had an avocado bathroom , bath and toilet. It was horrible!

Being an independent woman has nothing to do with hating men, nor choosing to share your life with a man. Nobody said there was anything wrong with traditional man/woman roles. (Or did you mean "rolls" as in bread?) But there are different options for different people. Clearly, if so many women have chosen careers over traditional marriage and children, the feminine role needed to be updated. Otherwise, we'd all be Beaver Cleaver's mother, now wouldn't we? I wouldn't give up my son or my career for anything, especially the traditional married-with-children lifestyle my mother hated so much. But to each his or her own. BTW, my son didn't need a traditional mother, nor traditional mother/father co-habitation. He turned out very well - I'm thinking better than a child someone as close-minded as you could produce. And I didn't need a man to give me financial stability, either. I've managed a life, a mortgage, car, retirement plan all on my own, thanks.

Valerie wouldn't have been around as Rhoda without Mary, but she is a better actress, bubbly and talking non stop/joking etc. I started not liking Mary as Laura because they always had her as the focus of many episodes such as her past loves/talents (she was greatly "admired" by Carl) so she must have had a real sweetheart deal of a contract.

@@marinazagrai1623 Mary's show also launched the groundbreaking "Lou Grant", which was on for 5 years. Ed Asner played the character for a whopping 12 seasons, longer than the 8 1/2 seasons that Valerie played Rhoda even. Mary Richards just wasn't as interesting a character as the supporting actors on her show.

Gary Levy was originally an obnoxious jerk. They humanized him more as time went on, but he slid easily into the supportive (straight) friend role. This show sadly went Dr ownhill far too quickly. Not shepherded as well as the MTM show, it seems.

The problem with Gary was he was so unevenly written. Whatever character they needed to fit the script, they changed Gary to fit it, be it a one time joke or a plot line. He would go from episode to episode being bad at business, good at business. A mama's boy or a hot single guy on the loose.

Joe was always angry because he was uncomfortable, and Rhoda's insecurities were fueled by his discomfort of being married...They were both jerks in these moments, it's just that Joe seemed like the bigger jerk, since everyone (fans) feels so protective of Rhoda- we've known her longer:)

More likely, they never should have married in the first place, as being single was part of her definition. But dating an endless parade of men wouldn't have worked, either. If Mary had married, then how merry would Mary have been?

The producers of the show thought a single woman would give them more story lines.

I AGREE it IS Rhoda's fault. She gets all possessive and angry too quick. She wanted to marry Joe before they dated, literally. She wants this guy for a steady boyfriend after the 2nd date. It's true Rhoda is indeed nuts! Remember when she took time off from work so she could see Joe? Then when Joe he said he had to work she burst into flames? She didn't even check with him to see if he could take the time off! She just assumed he'd be free! Sounds to me that Rhoda is full of herself.

It's that age old problem; you attract your insecurities. Rhoda always struggled with self esteem and feelings of not being good enough. She then attracts men that fed that emotional need. At the same time she's strong, opinionated and independent and has a tendency to push her ideals on others. So here she is yet again falling in love with a man she knows doesn't want to get in a monogamist relationship but still tries to change him.

Agreed. The Writers should have lightened up on Rhoda being exasperated and angrier... after the first three seasons. Something about it lacked energy. I never liked the character of Joe, because he was always exasperated and angry about some thing.

She didnt force him. she just decided not to continue with him after she found out how he was. She rushed into the situation outa being on the rebound..Besides. theres a difference between being soneones plaything.on their terms plus not being upfront about it..or seeing someone and seeing how it goes down the road. ..This guy wants to degrade Rhoda and that will never happen The writers will not do that to her charactor..Im surprised they illuded thar she slept with the user. Then make her seem uncool not to just say ok. ill just fool around whenever..taking advantage of her since she has no children.

She's allowed to set her own boundaries on what she's comfortable with. She did push Joe, in a way, but he also agreed to her terms. It just wasn't gonna work, though, if either one of them had to compromise as much as he did. There wasn't enough communication about this.

Funny, I was about to comment and say that the makeup person has used way too much gray in Valerie's makeup this season. I didn't even know that there was gray in TV face makeup, but here it is. It's off-putting and unnatural. All the other actors featured here look fine. Weird.

It looks as though they were trying to make her tan paler by powdering over it. If she suddenly looked really tanned then they’d have to explain it in the show. But they didn’t do a good job.

@@nonenoneonenonenone You have to understand that in the 1970's, people who came of age in that decade or in the 1960's were NEVER told by their parents, teachers or other older role models that they were anything special. In fact, unlike the millennials, most of us were told just the opposite. In particular we were told things like "we don't know anything because we are still "wet behind the ears."" You are nothing special, etc., etc. Why do you think baby boomers lavished praise on their children and sponsored giving everyone a trophy just because they were participants? It is because baby boomers were trying to overcompensate for not having that praise from their parents. We were NEVER, and I mean NEVER congratulated for any accomplishment, even if that accomplishment was major. We were NEVER told that someone is proud of us. And this is EXACTLY why so many of us were and may still be insecure. And then to top it all off, we are now told by millennials that it is our generation that is to be blamed for everything wrong in the world now!!! I swear that we were abused and belittled as youth and now that we are older and had some hope that we would be respected by the newer generations just as we had respected our elders, instead we are further belittled and demeaned by the millennials. Sometimes I think we baby boomers should be called "the generation that was screwed coming and going!" But I will tell you one thing! We are FED UP and I will say it again we are FED UP with the abuse. We had no child protective services or any other agency to protect us as children. We had to take the abuse because we had absolutely no other alternative than to live with our parents or end up in juvenile hall. No one EVER thought that the child was abused when we baby boomers were children!!! So if you wonder why so many of us our insecure, that is the reason!
