This is my 24% TCA Peel video - documenting the entire process from start to finish. Also sharing progress day-by-day up until one week. I had a lot of unexpected situations while doing the peel. I hope that the learning experience here will give you some insight into the various outcomes and scenarios involved in DIY at-home TCA peels.
*****
UPDATE: I no longer buy TCA peels from Makeupartistschoice and I don't recommend them, just based on my experiences. I know some people like them, but I have had way better results with TCA peels from Platinum Skincare, a brand recommended to me by you guys in the comments - thanks! I have an updated TCA peel video here: • TCA Peel at Home | Bef... that shows my RESULTS - and my most COMPREHENSIVE TCA peel video to date. And, I hope it helps and hope you check it out. On that video in the description you can find a link to the one I currently use and also the highest coupon code out there as well.

One thing I completely forgot to mention is this: the first evening, once my skin redness dissipated, I decided to put some higher strength Tretinoin (Retin A) on my face for an hour and then I washed it off. I wanted to increase the turnover rate with the peel - ensuring I would peel sooner rather than later. And, it did work, though it is probably something that is not recommended to do.
The 24% TCA peel was purchased from Makeupartistschoice.com (MUAC's TCA Peel). They don't sell the exact one anymore, but they sell this adjustable strength one: www.makeupartistschoice.com/3....
Full disclaimer is below. Here I just want to give a personal note: Please be extremely careful if you are considering doing a TCA peel at home. Do extensive research. It is also never recommended to start out with anything but the lowest peel available. The company I bought this from, in my opinion, their peels are weaker than some from other companies. I do not think this 24% is the same as one similarly sold from another company. I would need to try or test something out to know for sure though. This requires extreme care and caution. Whatever you do is at your own risk. Most people do not do TCA peels unless they have worked their way up from lower strength peels - like Glycolic peels.

I do my tca in sections (like one section, start to finish, then the next section, and so on), and it is waaaay more tolerable. Try it next time. I promise, it is a totally different experience. Doing my whole face absolutely traumatized me. Now I do my forehead first, then right side, then left side...following all the steps for each section. Night and day, girl, night and day difference.

THANK YOU for being one of the first people to fully acknowledge how damn painful TCA peels are!! Drives me crazy when people describe it as a “tingling sensation.” Really? Because it feels like my face is being held against the sun. Passed kidney stones and been in the hospital for second degree burns and a TCA peel still brings me to my knees 😂.

freelikea plane! Thanks for the comments today! I hope you had a great day! Congrats on being a new mom! That is exciting but also I'm sure it's extremely exhausting. :) For me, when my son was little it was very difficult - like for most people. He was colicky and crying all the time. It was so stressful sometimes. But, at some point, it's hard to remember exactly when, but I started to go to the gym (the Ymca) as they would watch him (I think he might have been a toddler by this point) and I could have a little break and exercise. It helps just to get out and go places - or it did for me. Hopefully you have some help with your little one. It's hard if you don't. I didn't have family helping me with my little baby. You're making me miss those days though! Even though it is really hard, it's harder to see them grow up so fast! Anyway, I really hope you're doing ok. Hopefully you have some time for yourself or to yourself! If I can help with anything, let me know! - Holly :)

@@LifeDIY Thanks! Need a chuckle? A few months ago I ordered dinner from Taco Bell. I had to use the "sign in through Google" option since I couldn't remember my PayPal password or something. So... my hubby went to pick up the food and was asked to wait in his car. Few minutes later the he was approached by 2 police officers. Taco Bell had called the police because they thought I was sending a secret message through my taco order to "Send Help". Apparently my Google name was at the top of my order and they were worried I was being held against my will. Hubby was SO MAD at me but I was cracking up. I’m impressed you did all those layers on a high strength TCA peel !!! When I do TCA, I’m starting with 13% one layer. I’m going on baby steps. Do you have snow now? 🥶 I’ll bet lying facedown in snow would bring immediate relief after putting on all those layers. You have a high pain tolerance so I know it must hurt if you say it’s painful. As Kizzy ddd commented, I’d like to see you do Platinum Skincare’s new peel that’s coming out in 2020. It’s a mystery, and they won’t reveal details yet. Also thank you for stressing use of SPF products after this procedure. I’m really bad about doing that, and I’m in Texas where we get a lot of sun. However, when you said we can get hyperpigmentation easily now since our skin is “exposed”, I took note. 🤔

Thanks so much Laura. You are smart to start with the lowest one. We do have snow now - maybe four inches. How is the weather by you? I have the Platinum skincare page open as I will order it tonight. I think I need to do it soon as I need time for it to heal and don't want to go out much when I'm doing the peel. I'm trying to get everything done before summer because I may be going back to college then. Long story. But, anyway, glad you noticed what I said about the hyperpigmentation. I think the deeper the peel, the more likely it will happen. But, some people prep the skin beforehand for a week or two with other products to try to prevent this. I need to look into that as it's been a while! I am glad you brought it up!

I was wondering how that deep peel went for you? I’ll bet you’ll look great after the peel. You’re right about hyperpigmentation risks. Platinum Skincare makes a big deal about preventing hyperpigmentation from a peel by using Fade Bright beforehand. I like that product. How exciting to college! You’ll look like you fit in since you’re so youthful looking. You’ll have to share about it sometime. 😊

@LifeDIY
@LifeDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Miu Miu, thanks for the sweet comment. :) I didn't do a followup video. Good idea though - maybe I should. For after care, I tried to keep my face hydrated (water is fine). You should never pick or peel anything off, and should not rub it or exfoliate as the skin is peeling. So, you need to be really gentle when peeling. It actually became a bit itchy and uncomfortable after the peeling started, so I would just try to keep my skin moisturized and also try to wear SPF as the peeling happened. The peeling didn't take too long luckily. Then, after the peeling is done, it's most important to wear lots of SPF and also it's advised to stay out of the sun for two weeks. The company I bought that peel from, MakeupArtistsChoice - I think their peel just isn't as strong as ones from other companies. I ended up buying TCA from Platinum Skincare for my next peel. I will do a video on it too - really soon (this month I believe). Here is some aftercare info from the company I just bought from: www.platinumskincare.com/tca-peel-application-detailed-faq-aftercare/ - it might help!

It appears to me that this peel was not worth the pain. Good luck on your next peel. I had my first and only peel done by a dermatologist about 15 years ago. I was in no way mentally or physically prepared for this peel. It was TCA 30%. Something went terribly wrong. It burned and kept burning intensely for a week. I keep a large bowl of ice water to douse my face in every few minutes nearby. I was red for several months. I am terrified of the same experience happening again. Any suggestions on where I should start?
@LifeDIY
@LifeDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura, thank you so much for sharing that. That is absolutely terrible what happened with your peel years ago. That is a very strong peel. Also, you are 100% correct that this peel was not worth the pain. I realized later that their 24% might be equivalent to a 7-10% from a different company - though the pain was terrible. In the end of the video I think I was being overly optimistic with my thoughts. I have changed my mind on how I view this peel now. I ended up reading some great comments and some people in the comment section here recommended a company called Platinum Skincare. I had heard of them before and seen some of their videos in the past. They seem really reputable. I noticed you saw the video about beginner peels to try out. I think if you are new to doing peels in general, then there are much better options than TCA. My favorite peel out there is the AHA/BHA peel by the Ordinary (I did a video on this one too). And, it is a little strong if someone has sensitive skin or isn't used to peels. I think a great beginner first peel is the radiance peel by MakeupArtistsChoice or their Pumpkin enzyme peel/mask. They are both amazing and then once you start using those milder peels you will get a feel for things and how your skin reacts and you will probably be more confident in moving up to other peels - like glycolic 20 or 30% (I've seen glycolic 10% peel pads for sale too which is great to start with) then moving up from there. The glycolic 30% is nothing like the TCA 30% - they are totally different kinds of peels and nothing compares to TCA. I currently am not a huge huge fan of TCA peels but I never had great experiences with them. I just posted to my website about this here: lifeanddiy.com/platinumskincarepeel20percent where I did another TCA peel for experimentation purposes - to do a video and also I would like to know if TCA peels can really create profound results (if it is really worth doing or not). I share my full experience there on that post as I am currently healing on day 5 from their TCA peel. Update: I am still healing from my latest TCA Peel from Platinum Skincare and I didn't expect results from one peel. I know it usually takes a series but I am already seeing a change in the static fine lines - in some areas around my eyes they appear to be not visible now. We will see how it pans out but so far I am really liking how things are looking. I recommend checking out the Platinum Skincare's youtube videos if you are ever thinking about using their products. They at least have a much, much lower percentage TCA available if people want to go that route - I think it's 7%. I would definitely recommend starting with something milder and getting used to peels and see how much you like them, how your skin is with them, etc. The Ordinary sells a glycolic toner that I think is less than 10% glycolic - though it does feel a bit strong - it is a great place to start (in addition or if you don't feel like trying the MakeupArtistsChoice radiance peel or pumpkin enzyme peel) - this is another option that I am really familiar with. Then as soon as your skin is really used to doing these milder ones, at some point I really recommend the Ordinary's AHA/BHA peel as it's the best peel I have ever used and it's really helped my skin!

Loved your video! We would be friends! My only recommendation would be to look into MedPeel brand through their website. Excellent company and quality peels. I am an esthetician and really pride myself on the science behind skin. Basically I would venture to say that even though you used a 24% tca, the ph was probably on the higher side, thus not penetrating as deep as an acid with a lower ph would, so in essence it may have been about as strong as a 10% tca peel, thus requiring so many layers. For example A 20% tca peel could have a lower ph than a 30% tca peel, and thus result in the same or greater peeling/ frosting than the 30%. Other than the ph, I would also agree not to do so many layers without frosting simply because as you stated, tca is very toxic (there are studies coming out about its cancer causing potential.). I still do use tca, just in moderation. What I do is purchase the medpeel tca 20%, I’ve tried others with success I can list, and I apply a 50% glycolic from same company and then follow with one maybe two layers of tca. I start with my forehead with a gauze pad, applying light even coats. Let that frost completely & neutralize. Then progress to the lower portion of the face. You can slightly go over the areas that overlap without any issues. The trick is to apply even thin layers and neutralize as you go. In my experience working on clients, with a proper acid with a low ph, they will frost within 30 seconds. Good luck!!

I am 49. Hyperpigmentation from too much sun and now some ugly age spots. I would like to try the peel, but it is the start of summer. Should I wait until winter? Never touched my face with anything before, so what you recommend?
@LifeDIY
@LifeDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there Scott! If you have never done any peels, I would definitely start out with the lowest percentage glycolic acid first. It will get your skin used to peels and it has no downtime at all - usually no visible flaking or peeling, though it does work and can help get things started with addressing sunspots. Your skin will look renewed and feel amazing, even after your first peel. It helps shorterm and over the longterm to address skin issues. I recommend the brand Platinum Skincare - and I did a newer TCA peel with their product and did a video on it after this video. I have been hooked on their products ever since then. If it was me, I woudn't really wait for winter to do any of them. Just be really careful after doing a TCA peel - try to stay in for a few days - wear sunscreen. With any peels and dealing with pigmentation, always wear sunscreen.I am excited for you to try out the other types of peels first. If you didn't want to try out other ones, you could always go with their lowest percentage TCA peel to start. If you have more questions, please ask!

Thanks so much for the vid! I do want you to know that blanching (frosting) doesn’t happen with everyone. Nor does it have to. Frosting is just coagulation within the skins protein. Some ppl never see it. Some see it all the time. But it definitely doesn’t mean your not going deep enough or you’re not going to peel. Ugggg girl I feel for you though. Maybe a small fan next time? You can also use a numbing cream prior to. (Just make sure to rinse your face twice). I’m curious to know what percentage you used. Unless I missed it? I hope it was a small percentage. As I definitely believe that multiple layers of a smaller percentage is more effective than one/two layers of a higher percentage.
@LifeDIY
@LifeDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Kristen, so true. Thank you for sharing all this. I agree about the frosting. I was using 24% TCA from MakeupArtistsChoice. I did a new TCA video where the product was lower strength and from a different company - Platinum Skincare - and the pain was less and the results were better (and had some frosting too). :) I think the 24% from that company was not as strong as it stated (probably closer to 10%) so I had a hard time with it and the pain was really intense. I prefer the Platinum Skincare ones now.

Muac’s TCA instructions say to remove if you see frosting so this is so wild to me to see! I thought you had to panic if it frosted and remove it ASAP, but you’re saying you WANT frosting, just to make sure it’s even? Is that right? This makes a lot more sense to me, honestly, but I’d still love to understand a bit better if you have a chance to reply to this. I know it’s an old video, but it’s still helpful!

35% last night. No Pain, No gain! Let it self neutralize. Could swear it was over 35%. Almost immediate frosting. A second layer was not an option. What ever you are doing, keep at all. What a pretty lady. I am convinced that sellers often get the percentages wrong. Have had 15% that reacted like 35% and vice versa. The 35% from last night seriously felt like a propane torch. A wiser person would probably have stopped, but hey, got my money's worth haha.

Wow! I hope you get some amazing results! I totally agree about how some sellers have differing percentages. I have had that exact experience. Do you mind if I ask what company did you buy from? I am about to do another one for a video and I listened to some great commenters on here who recommended Platinum Skincare - I bought both their 20 and 30%. Have you done many TCA peels in the past? :) I'm curious to see how strong these ones actually are. I know that pain you had was intense! I would rather have one intensely painful layer than multiple layers! Usually the turnover is faster too with stronger ones - peeling happens sooner and is done sooner. The pain though - is unbelievable.

@@LifeDIY The bottle says Perfect Image. Wish there was a way to test percentages. My whole face turned to snow last night and a fan was 100% needed. Tolerable though. Used glycolic 15% cream for short periods over a week or two prior. Seems to be a good prep. No moisturizer until this morning. Some have said it you really want that extra 'damage' give it the evening w/o anything. Day 3-4 will be Tales From the Crypt. You know it is strong when you turn white and your face goes into distortion mode haha. Done alternating TCA and Microneedling over three years. Same pen you use. Only pro treatment was IPL and now you can buy an IPL system that is 50% as strong as a pro until for around $500.00. I see flashes in my future.

I really wanted to do one today but I need to figure out my schedule so no one needs to see my Tales from the Crypt face!!! I want to squeeze in a TCA but like you said it is so hard to know how strong it will be. Your skin must look really good if you do these regularly! Be careful if you end up doing IPL on your face. I am kind of convinced that I created under eye hallows from using IPL on my face as I did not have them prior to doing it. I would just do some research. Some people have issues with it melting fat away where you want fat om the face.it does work for hair removal though. ;)

@LifeDIY

Hi Agnieszka, Thanks for the comment. I recommend this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbp8i9WUvq_Wqpc.html and basically you definitely don't want to start out with TCA peels. I am still trying to figure out if TCA peels are worth doing overall, as they involve pain and down time. But, I have had incredible results from using other peels regularly. TCA peels are just very different from other normal at-home peels. I still recommend the same ones from the video I linked to (the Radiance peel from MakeupArtistsChoice and the Pumpkin Enzyme Peel/Mask are incredible beginner ones). The other ones I recommend once you are getting used to these milder ones, are from the Ordinary. The Ordinary has a glycolic toner that is less than 10% and it's pretty amazing - like a mini peel and toner in one. And, the Ordinary's AHA/BHA peel (I did a video on this one) is my absolute favorite and incredible. Since you said your skin isn't super sensitive, you might be able to try that one out soon too if your skin is ok with it. :) But, if you are totally new to peels, it's good to get comfortable with lesser strength ones first. Eventually if you are ever comfortable with it, microneedling with a roller or pen are also great for collagen and elasticity. :)
@GoferGirl
@GoferGirl 2 ай бұрын
Start with daily use of mild chemical exfoliants such as Glycolic acid 5%, salicylic acid 2%, AHA, etc as a toner after cleansing. And Use Retinol 3x/wk. After a few weeks of this, try TCA 10% or 15% and just do one or two layers the first time. Always do a patch test first! If you're too scared to DIY, try your first peel with a professional.

Would you mind explaining the type of exact pain you mean? It will help prepare me hehe.
@LifeDIY
@LifeDIY 4 жыл бұрын
This is a tough one! I don't want to scare you! I think it is so hard to compare this type of pain to something though. It basically burns. Then when you do another layer it feels like you are burning something that is already raw and burnt. For me, when doing these TCA peels, I try to do less layers with a bit of a stronger peel to avoid unnecessary pain - if that makes sense. But, it is hard to gauge how strong the peel is unless you've used it a few times. It is a good idea to do a patch test, which is usually recommended in the instructions - that can help you get an idea of what to expect. You can also test a peel on a different part of the body to see how painful it is. Every time I do this type of peel, it seems like I can handle it (after the fact) but during the peel sometimes it is pretty overwhelming. The cold air helped massively with this peel I did though.

Life & DIY ya it depends on where I work, some spas I would not be able to do the peels but if at a medical spa I have seen esthetician’s do them. I’m starting with the 13%, it’s been to start low and build. I know you said you did not see a lot of results from the last one and you did not see a lot of frosting, trust me you don’t want to force your skin into a higher strength and end up hurting yourself. Remember you are breaking down skin, if you are too strong say with the percentage or with too many layers, you get get a permanent scar from over peeling too fast. Unfortunately you have to be very patient on peels, no way around it. So I’m starting on 13% even though my skin is very used to peels. Be careful on yourself, no need to rush.
