The murder of Tiberius Gracchus ultimately lead to more political conflict. If those senators knew that the Roman Republic itself would be all but finished 100 years after killing Gracchus in cold blood, disregarding the very laws they claimed to uphold, would they still do it? Certainly after Tiberius Gracchus and his brother Gaius, future politicians who wanted prestige, reforms or both would do so with a professional army loyal to them and not the Senate. Caesar learned to avoid this fate.

Funny enough it was this very lack of awareness by these senators that led to the rise of men like Cesar. If the people had jobs and slaves were not replacing them, this would never have gave popularity to Cesar in the first place

Tiberius was one of the greatest senators of Rome. He distributed land owned by the city, and gave it to the poor. He gave the renters, the rich, imbursement; but the Senate selfishly vetoed it. So he than passed the exact same bill, but without the imbursment. He tried to solve problems with politics, and died for it.

If he were a populist hero, then he wouldn’t have ignored the actual cause of the land crisis: slavery. Instead, he just gave free land to poor people, without even teaching them how to farm. Unsurprisingly, his law did nothing to help the land crisis.

@@kevin6293 dude he tried to take the land away from the senators. Because there was a law against it that hadn't been Inforced for a long time. No man was supposed to have that much land. So the senators had way to much land or they just put it in another person's name for them. Even if they didn't know how to farm, was it better to just give it to the senators? So they had more slaves, less soldiers, and even more poor people in Rome?

+SlyDessertFox I am sure if Polybius was here today, he would see places like Wall Mart and Citibank as the modern 'Latifunda' as they stood on the Italian Peninsula in the 2nd Century BC as he did. Infact, there is not much different between the 'latifunda' and 'Wallmart', you just replace 'bondage to chains' to 'bondage to money', AKA, wage-slavery. Other comparisons including an increasing gap between middle and upper classes (plebeian & patricians), consolidation of political power in particular gens/families (very prominent in 2nd century BC Roman politics) and perpetual, illegal and pre-emptive war (Rome managed to expand, nearly 4x its size from 200BC - 100BC, The Macedonian Wars, The Illyrian Wars, The Final Punic War, The Numidian Wars, The Lusitania Wars, The Celtiberian Wars), compare that to the amount of Wars that the USA has been involved in in the last 100 years. Call me a fool and mock my analogies but history is always bound to repeat itself.
@slydessertfox6267

Fearosius I mean, sure, but again, the two societies are incomparable. You can make some vague overgeneralizations (and I'm on the socialist side of the political spectrum so its not like I necessarily disagree with you), but the political situation in Rome in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC was completely unique to the Roman government system, which isn't actually much like ours at all.

Emperors would have happened regardless because of the retroactive political revenge possibility. You did something in your Consulship (Aka Prime minster type thing) and your political enemies charged you for something after your turn was up, your protection gone and tried to have you killed by the "courts". Cesar for example,if you look past hes ambitions, was forced to go down the route he did otherwise he would have been charged in Rome for "something". Hes mistake was to be openly Emperor.
@SefniAsheforr

I know this is seven years late, but no. Ultimately, Caesar's mistake was trusting the very men he spurned during his Consulship. I'm not justifying his assassination one bit, but he put too much trust in the Senator's of Rome and they paid him with a literal backstabbing for doing so. He could have been dictator for life had he not trusted his murderers.

That's bull 💩! Trump is the complete opposite, he and his far right loonies don't give a crap about the poor, the commoners, the mentally ill, and anyone else who isn't rich!

Its awful how u.t.u.b.e censors comments on normal language keywords. as do other forums, it makes adult english conversation very difficult. English is going to be dumbed down to 5th grade as a result.

The origin of the word fascism comes from the latin word fasces meaning "bundled axes". The fasces were carrier like banners by men at arms called lictors. Everywhere the Roman Consuls went. Night or day. Public or private. Consuls were entitled to 12 lictors. Dictators 24 ..
