Late to the party, mine was a 70 Mach 1. Found with huge hole in Cleveland but found a 2 bbl Windsor that I put ported 69 heads with screw in studs, port matched Ford alum intake Boss 302 solid lifter cam. Just my Woodward screamer in the early 80's.

Awesome vehicle...These model Mustangs were a favourite of mine as a kid growing up in that era. It's so grand to see them re-incarnated into the 21st century like that. Should bring Henry T Ford to tears if he were alive to see them...Love it...👍👍👍👍

The Boss 351's were serious engines. In '74 I owned a '70 Mach I with the 351 Cleveland 4bbl engine...when my Dad and me were tearing the engine down to convert it to solid lifters, much to our surprise and delight, we discovered it had 4 bolt mains...our surmise was it must have been a late car and the plant had a "spare" '71 Boss block around when it went down the assembly line and we got it. We ended up putting a very high lift solid crane cam (with appropriate valve train) in her along with an edelbrock manifold, an 850 Holley DP with mech secondaries, hooker headers and a Mallory dual point distributor, along the way my Dad (who was an Engineer out at Cape Kennedy) blue printed the engine as we put it back together. When all was said and done it pulled 465 H.P. on a machine shop dynamometer.

Steve, The Cleveland motors are great to build and do well with high rpms. I have owned a 71 Boss 351 and currently have a 351 4V, 4 speed in a 70 car and they are great street cars with plenty of power and torque stock. It sounds like you built a killer motor and what a score getting a 4 bolt main bottom end in your Mach.

@MC1...Thanks for the reply and nice chattin with an old Ford guy...yes it was amazing when we tore the motor down...back in '74 I wasn't the Ford "expert" I am today so when I saw the 4 bolt mains I didn't exactly know if the Cleveland's came that way or not, and neither did my Dad...and of course with no internet we ended up at our Ford dealer's service/parts dept asking about the block...they didn't know anything but when we gave them the casting number of D2AE it showed under the '71 Boss...but oddly also showed under '71 non Boss engines...anyway we had one. All these years later I realize the blocks are the same except the the 4 bolts have 4 bolts on all mains, which can be installed by any machine shop...of course my engine in '74, it was obvious the engine had never been out of the car before so it came from the factor like that...she was a running car and as Sr.in H.S. it was fun having the fastest car in Cocoa Beach...one funny thing about the car was (which much to my chagrin I learned twice before I actually believed it), was the exact moment the gas gauge needle touched the empty line, the engine died...lol...just one cough, one spit and she died....the 1st time it happened me and a buddy were incredulous, we thought we had an electrical problem or possibly a clogged fuel filter as we were used to fuel gauges going well past empty...we finally put some fuel in her and she fired right up...I thought I must have misread the fuel gauge and sure enough next time I ran her down to empty I watched it closely and wham the moment it touched, she died again...even back then I got a huge kick out of it and today it still makes me smile.

You probably had a 1972 R Code 4 bolt main, in 72 Ford dropped the Boss 351 but offered a slightly de-tuned Boss 351 motor. Difference was you could get it in any Mustang , Coupe, Sportsroof and covert. That motor became the service block for the 71 Boss as any 71 boss would have had a D1 casting in the prefix. Same bottom end though with 4 bolt mains.

MC1...One last comment...I have had a few high end Hipo mustangs over the years, including a real '65 fastback K code, a '69 and '70 Boss 302, the aforementioned '70 Mach I, the first fuelie in '86 and the coupe de grace a 2000 Cobra R model and have always wanted a Boss 351, but I just can't get past the '71's styling...I hated the car when it came out as a kid and it is still one of my least favorite pony car designs...I'd rather have a '71 Torino 429 SC...anyway I could never bring myself to buy a Boss 351 even though I absolutely think the engine is at the very pinnacle of Ford performance back in the muscle care era....okay later...hey speaking of 429 SCJ Torino's...do you know of any for sale? Obviously I can check the internet but thought I'd ask.

Yes the 71's Mustangs are a love it or hate it but those big bodies make for a great ride. No but I did have a 70 Cobra 429 SCJ Drag pack project , 4 speed car too that was in restoration. Someone saw it on the channel and the offer was too good to pass up. Kinda wish we still had it, killer car and it really hauled ass. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLV3nMqBuc7doqM.html I am not aware of any 70-71's for sale at this point.

Gorgeous car I think 69 is the sexiest body style for Mustang besides the 67 Fastback. A lot of people don't know but the boss 351 Mustang was one of the fastest factory Mustangs that ever came out.

I think that's the engine Ford should have offered for the 69-70 fastbacks right beside it's little brother and big brother Boss cars. Boss 351's were my favorite Ford engine growing up. That is a awesome Mach 1. I could be wrong but I remember the 71 Boss 351 had the fastest quarter mile time for a production Mustang til recently. That says a lot about that engine. Nice.
@robwright4398
@robwright4398 7 жыл бұрын
MrADVANCEDTEK so is that a hopped up 351 Windsor?
@MrADVANCEDTEK
@MrADVANCEDTEK 7 жыл бұрын
No it's a different engine family from the Windsor. It's a 335 series which is a later engine family that came out in 1970. Kinda confusing cause the same displacement and power rating for the 70 model year but it's a very different engine. The Boss 302 and 351 had very similar heads that had a canted valve design. I think that engine looks good to. Rare engine.
@robwright4398
@robwright4398 7 жыл бұрын
MrADVANCEDTEK thanks for the information. that is a really nice engine, i like the small block. What is the hp?
@MrADVANCEDTEK
@MrADVANCEDTEK 7 жыл бұрын
Rob Wright They had different rating for the 2v and 4v carbs can't remember the exact hp but the Boss 351 was rated at 330hp I believe. It was underated though. His Boss was modified if I understood him correctly. It does have solid lifters and a decent lope at idle so it's not stock. If your not into rare stuff and have money you could find a decent Cleveland block and get a set Jon Kaase P38 heads. They're a nice alternative and available. Finding a Boss 351 is not easy at all. I've only seen maybe 15-20 in my life.
@MrADVANCEDTEK
@MrADVANCEDTEK 7 жыл бұрын
I apologize. I believe I was incorrect about the Kaase heads working on a Cleveland block. I do not think they will. They are stated to work on Windsor blocks which have a different cooling flow within the block.

Really nice. Saw A 68 Shelby "Green Hornet" which was owned by Rodger Goodell come up on the Barrett Jackson auction in Vegas scheduled OCT 3-5th. I know this piece of rare mustang history did not meet reserve at the Scottsdale auction . Also now Carroll Shelby and Goodell did not destroy all the prototypes in the crusher and this one looks like the real deal. Own a few classic muscle cars nothing this rare however but will be at Vegas to see how high the bidding goes.

Wondering what's up with the "4 dislikes"? I wonder if he's ever driven down the track. If so what would the 1/4 mile ET be? The bigger 71 Mustang did it in 13.8 seconds. This car, with his aftermarket goodies should be into the 12's

The Boss 351 was likely the most powerful factory small block ever made. Hot rod did a shoot out vs the LT1 and Boss 351 and made more power and torque, be a decent amount. Not sure I would have transplanted one into something else as any 4 bolt main Cleveland could be built to spec but that's just me.

Myself can testify why they called the 351 Cleveland the big block killer. I owned a 1970 Mustang Coupe with the 351 CJ with the quench chamber heads Headers Mallory dual-point Holley 750 some trick tuning still basically a stock motor and I embarrassed a 70 454 Chevelle destroyed a 340 Cuda and a 66 400 gto just to name some. Until my last race against the local 351 Boss Mustang who claimed to be the quickest in town. I did a 6000 RPM neutral drop decimated the tires for almost 1/8 of a mile and blew both head gaskets 😂 what a rush that was.
