0:09 ‐ 0:12 = Yep. That's definitely me. I tend to read articles more than stories because it's less of an investment of time. I've also been re-reading more often to help solidify vocabulary, whereas before I would just read one thing and move on to the next.

Reading Spanish books is my favorite learning activity. I started out by simply going to my local library and finding the children's Spanish books section. There I found a few delightful "graphic novel"-style books. Simplified dialog, with accompanying drawings. I then worked up to "young adult" books -- yes, including Harry Potter -- and I selected those for the exact reason that you said: I was already familiar with them. I have read The Martian and Project Hail Mary in Spanish, although without the accompanying audio version. I'm currently working on my 2nd Dan Brown book. I do keep my Spanish-English dictionary nearby but I always try to just read through the sentence or paragraph and see if I can figure out the meaning by context. I also spend part of each session reading out loud, and then finish reading quietly. I haven't yet tried an original written-in-Spanish book yet. Thanks the suggestion of Librevox, I'll check it out. And thank you for the video.

Sounds like a smart approach! Graphic novels, kids books and even comics are a great place to start. Those are pretty easy to find online, too, if your library is like mine and has a very limited Spanish section. Thanks for watching!

May I offer a uniquely conventional option? Kindle. I do all the things you said regarding skill level selection, but Kindle based books have the e-dictionary built in and Wikipedia for colloquial uses. It has offered me many times a quick confirmation of a word or phrase meaning without having to pause for more than a moment from the story. Good luck all! FYI, I’m at the B1-B2 CEFR level at present.

😊 I agree . So long as I'm not trying to read way above my level, the Kindle in-built dictionary enables a super quick check on a word . Then I can fully understand the text and move on quickly to enjoy the story. Happy reading!

I never considered the Kindle. I have one original (black & white text, no background light) and one Kindle Fire which I believe will work with the type of books you mention. What books can you recommend for someone bridging A1-A2 level, please?

Good point! I love those touch dictionaries, they’re so easy to use. I have a kindle too but in my case, I still get distracted and find that I’m too quick to look things up rather than think through the context to consider meaning (which would make me more likely to remember the word).

@kinhelfa Graded readers are probably your best bet. Hard to recommend a specific one since personal taste is important. I would just search “graded readers Spanish” and see what catches your eye. Bilingual texts (books with Spanish on one side and English on the other) that you’re already very familiar with could also work.

20 years of learning spanish? 😳 how old are you if i may ask?

I’m 32. If hasn’t been all active learning by any means. The early (first 5-6) years were pretty typical grammar heavy classes in school, but finding books and music I enjoyed in Spanish helped me feel a lot of progress.

@@BreakthroughSpanish i am 27. same goes for me with english. i started learning english in 3rd grade (8 years old), but wasnt able to hold a conversation and barely understood movies/series at age 16. with books and movies i made real progress. after i had read 3 beginner books in spanish i got a little too confident and bought a book for advanced learners three weeks ago. the structure felt different and i got completely lost in sentences that stretched over 3 to 4 lines. i havent learned spanish the past three weeks because i got super frustrated after only 4 pages. thank you for your helpful videos. this one came at the right moment
