Nice! Ive had general success with 50-55 # with arrow weights of around 570-600. I generally just do heavy inserts and 200 grain heads on my carbons and on aluminums I cut for the weight / spine on 225 grains up front. Its cool seeing your breakdown over the years.

Great video. One detail you might want to do. Start wrap at brace height. So every arrow can check brace height. I'm shooting 830 grains, 50lb @31inch draw great arrows

Is it ok to shoot a 750 gr arrow from my 42 lb recurve. I have a 27 draw with 500 spline arrows. I will be hunting pig & deer here in Florida. I am thinking of installing a 300 gr brass insert & 125 gr muzzy 3 blade. With a 27" draw L how long should i cut my arrows? I could go with more insert wt, and or more head wt. but i have a ton of old 2 blade Bear & Zwickey's 125 grain heads. Let me know thanks for your help sure like your vids very good info!

Ypu could but I personally thing it will hinder your accuracy. My thought and experience is when I get above 13 grains per pound the value diminishes. It's a balance of weight and trajectory. You want to gain all the weight benefits but not to the point of loosing the hunting trajectory.

I have found my max I can draw again and again is currently 45# at 28 inches for my good recurve bow so I can get that bow to 35# with my draw (Scary thing is the minimum is 30# for South Dakota) at 25 --25.5 inches so I am getting the best arrows for my bow like with cheap Chinese arrows Musen these with 1916 Aluminum at 30 inches rated for a 500 spine being the best design for the bow model. My mom I am still trying to find the right Aluminum arrow for her, trying a few lighter models then the 19 and knowing her draw is shorter might help so I can get an inch shorter then the 30 inch standard on one model of the two Easton ones for her light 28--30# bow.

@@SamkoTradBow Yep I like the thing, I tried to get the max I could hunt with provided it was at to above 35# for my draw that I could shoot over and over again, the bow is going to work for multiple hunting types like Deer eventually, rabbits and other animal multiples, Turkey maybe?, and things like Fox, Coyotes, and the like. For bigger game /more dangerous Puma/Mountain Lion or if Elk was more a thing in South Dakota outside the Black Hills I would want a 55 pound bow to shoot for my use so it is drawing at 40 to 45 pounds as 40 pounds is minimum for Elk in South Dakota and the cat well that is a safety thing for that animal.

If I may ask a question , I'm new to trad and working on setting up hunting arrows I bought trad only from 3 rivers with left wig and am considering single bevel broadhead being a lefty should I shoot left or right bevel or does it even matter ? Thank you Sir
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter weather you shoot right or left. But it does matter and is important that you match the bevel to your fetching spin. So if you have left wing feathers you want a left bevel head, if you have right wing feathers you want a right bevel head.

Thank you Jason for another great informational video. You are the only one that I know of who is willing to inform us traditional bowmen with such great contain, both on your hunting course and KZfaq. Just curious, what type of speed you're getting from an arrow that heavy, not that I am speed freak, but just curious. My #49@28 longbow with 540gr arrows run about 169 fps on avg. I just noticed that there is a company selling 200& 300 grain brass inserts. I may try them I personally like 650 grains. With a 31.5” draw I have a hard time breaking 30% foc with the arrow length I use

Yep you can get brass 2 and 300 on amazon and ebay. Ethics arxhery makes stainless steel ones that are amazing too. Yep the longer draw the harder to get higher foc. But anything above 20 is a noticeable difference.

check out Victory arrows...super tuff, spine aligned, arrows with slick ICE coating. also FOC components with inserts that have collars to protect the shaft. Might find something you like and simplify ur setup. High FOC is the ticket...feathers or vanes almost become irrelevant. Bare shafts fly true out to 30 yds without them with 18%+ FOC. Victory has an awesome Trad shaft the has a linen coating that looks like wood with their super slick ICE coating...I've converted to Victory cause they make the best carbon and components at great prices.

Good video. I started in 82' with a #50 Ben Pearson hand me down recurve. I purchased my first compound in 85', a #72 Hoyt/Easton Rambo, shooting a 600 grain arrow at 208 fps. About a year or two later the "over draws" started coming out. I remember coveting those guys shooting those light fast arrows. It wasn't until I hunted with a guy, that had one, that I realized after speaking with him, that he was having deer run off. I told him all mine dropped where I shot them and that the arrow was usually stuck in the dirt or brush on the other side of the deer. I was a kid back then and didn't really grasp that a heavy slow moving object was like a locomotive going 10 miles per hour vs a VW bug going 70 mph. I still have that first compound and I think it might still work but at my age now #54 is more my style

Traditional Bowhunting And Wilderness Podcast I remember seeing the Overdraw bows new in the rack and thinking how futuristic they looked. That’s also about the time release aids were coming in to being a thing and bows were getting shorter. Here I was with my perfectly good 45” axle to axle compound shooting with a finger glove, thinking how in two years time I was being left behind in technology. Now looking back I’m glad I did not trade in and while I do own a short compound that I shoot with a release I much prefer shooting my traditional bows with my fingers. I would like to have in my collection a modern version of a long axle to axle compound, in a lesser poundage, cut only to center, like my old Hoyt, so that I could finger shoot with it.

@@SamkoTradBow I'm glad you made this video, its got me feeling nostalgic. I was trying to explain overdraw to some younger archers awhile back and they all looked at me like I was crazy when I told them it let your draw the broadhead past your hand. I also remember going with a Martin quiver because it was the most advanced technology, with a heavy duty composite hood, super durable foam insert, an aluminum and steel back bone that was angle adjustable and held 8 arrows. Who carries 8 arrows on their bow nowadays, Lol.
@SamkoTradBow

@@Backin_Theday yep like the 8 arrows delta quiver that asbell used to use on his bighorn recurves! Or chuck Adam's with his 10 arrow leather hip quiver! Oh the good old days! Screw in tree steps and 6 pound tree stands and homemade tree crotch boads.

I never used the overdraws but when I first started in the 1990's in 1997--1998 the older 35# Genesis came out the year after, that and some bow fishing models designed for not needing a release tool were coming out due to everything else going to need them. Bow Fishing people for people Bow Fishing wanted to not have to use a release tool for some reason at the time. Now you see people using release tools when Bow Fishing for at least 1/3 to 1/2 of them. Now on the other hand you also see even some people with either a Genesis--X or taking the Bow Fishing parts off a Bow Fishing model of high enough weight by putting on more normal parts as well as changing colors of bow if they feel the need to do just to hunt bare hand or gloved/tab hand so they do not need release tool to hunt. If I hunted with a compound I would look for either the bow that is a Genesis--X to hunt or the Bow Fishing models at a high enough weight at draw to shoot the animal.

great stuff... did you give any thought to using spray paint in place of a wrap? shouldn't be to much trouble to touch up when you need to replace a few feathers? I also had a Golden Eagle compound bow, pretty sure it was a recurve compound and @ over $200 it was considered top of the line and very expense for the time.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 жыл бұрын
Good tip on the spray paint. But I think the wraps will be more durable. Not sure as I never tried spray paint, so just guessing. Yeah that golden eagle sure was the rage back then. I paid 265 for the bow rest, quiver, and sights. I remember because I only had 200 in my bank and had to have my mom lend me the 65 on her credit card to get it. I was 19.

Great video! Question - do you shoot your arrows through a cronograph and if so what is your fps on your current setup? I shoot reflex deflex longbow 49# @26" and my arrow setup is 400 spine gold tip cut to 28" with 100 grain brass insert and 150 grain 4 blade magnus stinger. My FOC is 21.8% and that arrow is shooting 155 fps through crono. It's so cool to see how much the weight and high FOC helps with penetration. I am also fine with shooting a slower arrow I was just curious to know what your arrow speed was with your current setup
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have a rock solid set up. I have never shot an arrow thru a chrono. So I have no idea about speed. But I bet its pretty dang slow. 710 grain arrow out of a 57# bow with a 26 inch draw. They are not moving fast...lol

@@SamkoTradBow Lol yeah I just shot mine through a chrono the other day for the first time just for curiosity. I feel very confident with my current setup and FOC of 21.8%. Those arrows hit the target so much harder than a low FOC arrow. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the new tuffhead broadhead and your new arrow setup once you get it up and going. I kinda wish I could get my hands on some of those old magnus 2 blades that you have. Those look sweet!

In South Dakota you have to use the Dual Bevel for hunting, a single bevel is not legal for some reason still are not from what I have read. So you would have to change or hide what you are using from The South Dakota Game Fish & Parks law people if they come by and you decided to hunt over in South Dakota. I know at one point when governor Jenklow was in for his second maybe third term but different time from first (reason now governors are limited to two terms is due to that jack a$$), they tried to ban 2 blade and more then 4 blade points for hunting so all you could use was 3 and 4 blade but then somebody at GF&P made a big stink on how he could use legally a 75 grain Muzzy 3 blade and be legal yet his 150 grain two blade would not work and it shut them up, they still tired to ban more then 4 blade but that got stopped at the voting in state congress not that 5--6 blades are as easy to find today when Muzzy and a few others had a 6 blade they tried, 4 blades tend to be the max you will see in stores that tend to carry bigger named brands with maybe a few Chinese brands making 6 blade arrows still you can find online.

Howdy friend, a question for you, I believe you mentioned that your almost exclusively hunting deer out of a saddle now? I could be wrong. My question though, is would you still be at your fairly heavy arrow weight if you were shooting of the ground, or 50/50 tree and ground? would you still be up that heavy? I ask because I’m a long bow guy, and just recently started using a saddle, in the saddle I’m thinking. Geeze why don’t I go heavier and heavier, but when I’m on the ground, that straighter line trajectory may be easier to deal with... I’m not sure, I’m currently at a 500 overall, so close to your starting point, before you started making changes...
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 жыл бұрын
I actually never hunt out of a saddle. Spend 99% in a tree stand. But If I hunted from the ground I would not go lighter. I practice from the ground most of the time and stump shoot, and hog hunt from the ground. I notice very little trajectory difference between 600 and 700 grains. So I shoot 700. I don't think I will ever go below 650 or most likely 700 ever again. That 700 seems to be my sweet spot. Also keep in mind I would shoot at an animal farther that 20 to 25 yards. Evwn though I practice out to 40 regularly.

@@TheHYENA87 I like 12-14 grains of arrow weight per pound or bow weight. So I shoot 57# and 720 grain arrows. So I'm at about 13.5 grains per pound. For a 45# would be 540 to 630. But anything above 11 grains per pound is great weight. So for your bow 11 grains would be 495.
