Today, I'm going to dive into my personal journey of preparing for my first ever long distance triathlon. In this triathlon training vlog, I'll talk about the challenges I faced, how I structured my workouts, how I felt and what I'd do differently if I ever did it again. Hopefully you can use it as motivation, or to reflect on your own training and to see if a long distance triathlon is a challenge you'd like to take on yourself.

The first triathlon I ever did was an Ironman at age 61. This was probably not the best decision, but I had been biking for years and am a good swimmer. Too optimistically, I started training only 16 weeks out using one of Phil’s plans (with Training Peaks). The race went well; I finished in the upper half of my age group, and I beat my younger brother. The best advice I can offer is to be consistent in the training. In that 16 weeks I never missed a training session. Since then, I’ve done 2 “half’s” and another “full” at 64. 16 weeks for the first race was not a lot of time; if you can start 6-8 months out, it gives your body time to build your muscles and endurance better, even with most of the training in zone 2 or 3.

Thanks for your comment! It sounds like you have done really well. Yes, i would agree that it takes longer to get fit for a long-distance triathlon, especially if you're new to one of the three disciplines.

No mention of time in the entire video - however massive kudos for what you did in your first IM! I am currently training for my first with your advanced plan (i'm 18 weeks in with 18 to go) and would love to know what your CSS/FTP per kg/threshold running speed was when you smashed that 9:06?? I know it's not always super relevant as times are v v course dependent but would still be nice to benchmark

Feels like Im on the right track. New to the bike, ultra running background. Doing 2 tri club swim sessions a week, will switch one out for endurance session a month out. 5 rides a week, workouts, one long 80-100k rest easy, and 2 runs a week, will build time on feet over the coming months. Will introduce brick sessions end of June for mmid Sept race.

Sounds like the plan I used for my second IM, squeezing it all in is tricky but possible. I way under-trained for my first attempt, I got round, but hated all of it. Live and learn!

@@myprocoach123 it was Barcelona doing two bike loops, I really don't know how I talked myself into starting the second loop. I finished 50 from last with very few spectators left on course so this year when I finished mid field I went back out and cheered on everyone till the very last as I know how much it helps.
