You were the person who inspired me to first receive HRPT a couple years ago. Thanks and 73 from VE3SVF!

Once again very nice, informative video... Thank you for your contribution to the community, many newcomers to HRPT would really appreciate this practical demonstration as to how to hand track...

Another great video. I'm still planing to go to L-Band at some point. Exchange rates are really bad for me at the moment as I would have to import most of the items I need. For me to get a clear view I will have to go motorized on top of my roof as I live on a slopping block. But, I'm looking at 1.9m dish size, maybe 2.4m.

I'm really hoping somebody will make an in depth long video about receiving NOAA Satellite Transmissions... Really pleased that the Stoat Republic(Norfolk, UK) is visible in this video, 73 de M0VCX.

I've always been using the 137 mhz downline from NOAA 18, had no idea how much better the HRPT downlink would be. going to see if I can do this as well. :-)

Hey, good video, I have a question, the focal point of the dish, should that be focused on the rear of the helical by the feed point or the front of the helical turns?

This is an awesome series. I have a similarish TV dish that I want to try this with, but I don't have a tripod to hold it. What kind are you using?

Thanks for great instructions. They are probably the best thing to find at the moment. I would have one question. On your blog I read, Sawbird LNA is directly connected to the feed, using and short piece of coax is connected AirSpy Mini. The SDR is then connected to laptop with and 5m USB 2.0 active extension cable. In this video, LNA is also directly connected to the feed, then the quality coaxial cable is up to the laptop and there is SDR, connected by a short USB to the laptop. Do you recommend this setup now, based on your experience?

I switched to a different laptop which seems to be producing more noise over the USB lines, so just having longer coax is better in this case. Sadly this is something that doesn't have one definite answer and requires some experimentation. The coax doesn't need to be particularly high quality though, just regular 75 ohm sat TV cable is fine

@@dereksgcthat stuff often has better loss at this frequency too, so if you have it lying around it's worth it. Not very bendy though. I use RG-59 for ADS-B with good results. But that's 700 MHz lower
@MarkPentler
@MarkPentler 7 ай бұрын
Also this is my conundrum. I have quite bad noise so I'm going to mount my SDR-off dish and try some coax instead.

@dereksgc does the LNA have to be near antenna? or i can use 2m coax and LNA at the other end next to SDR?
@dereksgc
@dereksgc 10 ай бұрын
It needs to be as close to the antenna as possible, with as little loss between antenna and LNA as possible

Should I use quadrature sampling or direct sampling (L-Band) for the baseband recording in SDR# with my RTL-SDR V3? Thanks
@dereksgc
@dereksgc Жыл бұрын
Quadrature, direct sampling is only used at very low frequencies (effectively bypasses the tuner)

A cool idea: I know this is counter intuitive. But do one loong vidoe where you do not use any ready made tools to demodulate and decode wireless IQ data from the satelite. Do it all on your own code on a Jupyter notebok. People WILL watch! Finally, save the image to disk. That will be a hit.

I think, that i get good results on noaa apt. Its is time to try somethink new, but are they any geostacionary satelites that can i reach in europe? beacause trackink manualy looks hard to me, specally when i live in a big city.
@dereksgc
@dereksgc Жыл бұрын
The GEO situation in Europe is bad. Elektro-L N3* transmits LRIT, but only once every 3 hours, and it can be hard to find a place with direct line of sight to this satellite. There is also GOES-13 but I estimate it requires at least 150cm dish antenna, or 180cm if you want good results EDIT: Elektro-L N3, not N2

Do you think going without the tripod could affect it badly? I am thinking about just putting the dish on ground and aiming it that way. Still, I guess my biggest issue is people. Walking through a city with satellite dish will feel weird xD
@dereksgc
@dereksgc Жыл бұрын
You can try it, and it may work especially with smaller dishes (50-60cm). But just set your expectations correctly
@MarkPentler
@MarkPentler 7 ай бұрын
It works for me but raising the dish off the ground does lower the noise floor a bit. May just be the cable position, I need to work on reducing some USB noise. Max SNR 11-14dB. photos.google.com/share/AF1QipO74qtIZdaF0VDX3QptHo2KI2JMdLEfUeNHlMovRHcZQZZ5cUIwm5IK6BjguM1gnQ?key=VS1MWW5ZMnliaTExTmczcEIyMTh3ZE13VVo2VG5B
