This month, I went to my ten year high school reunion in Texas. I didn't come out and transition until after high school (and college, for that matter) so I had a lot of fears about how my peers would react to me.

It's dumb to say that we always speak of one SMALL part of us trans dudes. For example, I am transgender FTM but I like to draw and I'm pretty artistic with my anime art style. I also love singing despite the testosterone voice cracks. On top of all of that, I love comedy. Not all of me revolves around gender identity. Remember that next time you think about writing a comment on youtube videos about things you don't know.

I think that sort of thing indicates normalization, not stupidity. I had something similar happen in my own realization that I qualify as agender. "Some people don't feel like either gender? Ofc! I don't" without me noticing the clue stick. "I don't feel like either. Oh, well. Social roles are cultural constructs, anyway. I have female parts, so I am a woman" (under the biological definition, which exists but doesn't erase or replace the social one). Sure, it's equivocation fallacy to use the word in the biological sense when folks are chattering about the social sense, but I look feminine (anatomy plus general attire), so folks perceive me as a woman in person. Folks who just chat with me, without a photo, usually think I'm I guy-unless they're one of those fools who think ad hominem actually addresses an argument. Even then, pronouns and gendering are tools-as in, that's how I perceive them. It's still taken me an embarrassingly long time to notice the clue stick, never mind pick it up.

I went to high school in the 1990's. Being gay alone back then was a scandal, especially considering I went to school in the South, during the Great Religious Revival. Being transgender did NOT happen. That was something that happened on Jenny Jones or Jerry Springer, not in real life. I was picked on mercilessly all throughout school for various reasons. A lot of people were convinced I was gay, and in a way they were correct. I identify as s trans woman and am attracted to other women, so... I did not attend my 10 year or 20 year reunions partly because of my transition. Mostly, it was because I have no desire to be around these people again. I did not enjoy being around most of these people when we were forced to share space. Why would I choose to see them when I do not have to? I am fine with where I am in life and have no desire to relive those horrible memories.

Theres this concept called "Gay Time" where basically time represents itself differently when you are LGBT+. When you are cis or straight you experience time based on a general script: get career, get partner, get married, have kids. I don't have life goals and it confuses me when people do, but I recently realized its because I don't value or are able to do those things so they aren't markers of success or failure. in my opinion, happiness and fulfilling your values is success.

I re-met a guy who had a crush on me before I started transitioning/was out. He seemed conflicted, he even said he was against it and he could never see me as a man, I didn't let it get to me and joked as I normally would. He was rude during the first interaction, after that he simply asked many questions, some ruder than others but I tried to answer them all. After many friendly talks that seemed to fade. He said that I look like a handsome guy , uses the correct pronouns and name. He says he cares about sex and gender a lot and that he thinks trans people aren't right but it sure doesn't matter to his heart. It's been 2 months of friendly banter he acts the same as he did with me before, maybe even more excitable. That's actually how many of these situations go for me. As long as it's not a big deal and I act chill about it, no one really cares after a while.

I've attended every reunion, sometimes as newly divorced, husband present, husband in prison, single mom of 4, alone, brought my daughter, etc. Never owned a house, never had a "career", ...good grief! I'm tearing up! My class of just under 200 has always been supportive and kind. Oh. And at the 10th reunion? The girls were all recognizable, but the guys ALL had changed SO MUCH! You've just maybe changed a bit more than expected.

I went to my 5 year reunion last year and it was horrible. So many rude questions, "what are you doing with your life?" and, "why don't you have a job yet?" and, "when are you going to move out?" God, my parents can be so mean.

I didn't go to my reunion. But I sobbed after my best friend's baby shower, realising how behind I am? So maybe that is similar? I had spent weeks planning it without realising how it would feel to sit in that room and talk about babies and houses and spouses for 6 hours straight. I am happy for her, but it didn't feel great and honestly, baby showers are so weird.

wow, judging by the comments, your audience is super young. Making me feel like an old lady at 22 😂 My ten year renunion will be in 2024. I'll probably go, but it might be a sad affair. A few of my classmates have since died and a lot of them have gotten mixed up in drug misuse so it's probably gonna be a pretty small turnout. There have been plenty of sucess stories though! Lots of babies, people defying the odds and getting into top notch universities, people getting great jobs...i'm somewhere in the middle. After finishing uni i've not managed to do anything with my life. Here's hoping that by 2024 i'll have something to be proud of!

I am 54. Damn, I cannot believe I am that old!! I have loved going to my HS reunions! I am a cis, straight female, so no shocker that I was not worried. Although there have been several of my classmates show up and reveal themselves as gay, we have not yet had a trans classmate. I hope that my fellow classmates would be kind and welcoming to them if they did come back! There were only 152 of us, and we are in a demographic that really never saw being trans as an option, but it would seem, statistically, that we should have some. I hope that no one stays away because of this! Now I want to find out about everyone I graduated with!!

Wow. I did not expect my past to pop up through KZfaq. This world is smaller than I expected. I knew you were from Texas but I didn't know you were from Grapevine. I lived there as well. I'm a couple of years older than you so we wouldn't have known each other. But wow the world is small. I moved away right after I graduated. This is bringing up so many emotions. I guess I just want to say, I see you, and I know what it was like to live there as well and the social expectations and what have you. Also a comment about marriage and kids and all that....I feel there is such a heavy expectation in the south to focus on getting married, and having kids right away as opposed to career development and success. Perhaps that was my experience being raised as a woman there though, and others would have a different experience.

I came here to say the same thing! I loved speech. I also have dysphoria around my voice, it's probably the biggest reason I want to start T. I've done a little bit of DIY vocal training and have been practicing speaking at the lower end of my range which does help a little bit. I've found that a big part of it is undoing social conditioning to speak as unobtrusively as possible (which is a work in progress for me).

I'm pansexual and in a relation with a woman since 7th class, so I was 13 then and nobody knew about it the next 7 years. I married her last year and we adopted my niece who's parents died. And as she is just 6 months old I took her with me. Nobody else was married or had a kid, we are all 20 years old so we are still very young. And I came there with my baby and my wife came 1 hour later so everybody was curios who I have a baby with. Their faces were hilarious! Nobody believed it until we showed them our wedding pictures!

And then, there's me. 26 years old, I have a general job NOT in the field I studied in, i do not have kids (honestly, no jealousy here, i never wanted kids in the first place) still live at home (although that's another project of mine to have my apt at the beginning of 2021). And my brother, who's 4 years younger than me (22yo) has a girlfriend and they are expecting a baby in August 2020 (edit: the baby was born yesterday - 21 August 2020), so yeah, I know everyone goes at their own rhythm, but personally speaking, i still feel like I'm 19, not 26.

I really enjoyed this video, which is weird because I usually don't watch sit-down videos like this. The way this is told and has little bits of information on the community thrown in so casually is just amazing. I thought this was gonna be a sad, photo montage with some 10-second video clips thrown in when I clicked, so this was a nice refreshing taste of reality. This comment is just a word throw up and probably doesn't make much sense, but to make a longish story short: Thank you for making this video, and thank you for just doing what you are doing.

I’m a trans guy but I haven’t came out yet except to my friends. Turns out some people found out and told everyone. Someone asked my twin sister if “I wanted to be a boy”. Oh god help. I’m scared to go to school everyday now in case someone mentions it. One of my teachers is also transphobic and a lot of people (mainly other boys) would never let me hear the end of it. Basically I’m screwed.

Hey Jackson, I understand your pressure to fit in and show your accomplishments at the reunion. But you know what, you're doing a lot to inform people in society, speak out for other who don't have a voice or a stuck in relationships, families, work, religion and surroundings that don't let them be themselves, where ever that might be gender, sex, habits, looks, expectations etc. - and last but not least you did something for yourself. It doesn't matter if you're "behind" others in life. Everybody has and should have the option to life live like they want and approach everybody like they want. And set their goals and live upon their strengthes and focus points. Free of expectations like work, income, family, children, cars, objects and whatnot. You're doing great Jackson, if you look back. And to others who are reading this, look at yourself, what you may have accomplished for yourself and for others. Maybe only last day. Or your going through a tough time right now? Look back a few years earlier. Or decades. You probably been there for someone. Helped out a family member. Gave a shoulder, an advice. Maybe a place to stay overnight. Or maybe just the pure joy of being together, talk, listen to music, play games. You probably did something nice for yourself and for others at some point. You're not bad. Just sometimes caped in expectations around you. Be true to yourself. And when looking back, get some energy of your positivity in life. And with that energy step out the dark and make new moves for you. All the best.

The way I always look at things is that I’ve made the best decisions I could with what I’ve had. I did what was right for me. I’m not behind, because it’s not a race. Other people haven’t dealt with the things that I have. Plus all of the coolest (cis) parents I know did it in their thirties and forties when they too had figured more out. I’m glad you got to go to your reunion and you had a mostly positive experience! I never even got an invite to mine which made that easy!

I skipped my 10 year reunion for a couple reasons, one of which was that I wasn't proud of my life...I didn't want to spend time with people I didn't care about talking about a job I hated. I'm glad you had a good experience, but those feelings of self-disappointment are certainly not uncommon! It's also a good reminder for all of us that everyone has their own timeline and someone else's accomplishments are completely separate from your life and your current and future successes.

Just moved to Texas 7 months ago (also in DFW, woot!). I'm much older than you, and obviously MTF, but things are going really well for me here. Also, like you, I'm wanting to go to high school reunion. We may or may not get one this year - it would be the 15 year - in Oklahoma, because that's where I went to high school, but that's just stayed over, so no problem, of course. I came out to just one classmate that I graduated with, and it was just a few days ago. I agree with you though. We shouldn't let the past we chose that we needed to take hold us back from what we want to do, whether it be something grandiose, or something as small as a high school reunion.

I went to a middle school reunion (I think it was a 15 yr reunion), and had a similar gut punch feeling of being behind everyone else. Everyone else was or had been in relationships or had kids or careers. Growing up at a time when there wasn't KZfaq or Google or social media, I didn't realize there was such a thing as being ace or aro or non-binary. Thanks to KZfaqrs like yourself, I've learned more about LGBT+ identities, and I understand more about myself. Thank you.
