You’re so right about there not being physios in the US! It’s so frustrating…they’re here but it seems like the only way to work with them is after an injury has already occurred and nothing for prevention. Such a bummer.

That’s crazy! I could not imagine not having my physio team to help protect my back and hip issues (non injury issue) with proper form and strength/stretching to help.

You can seek out a strength and conditioning coach or a corrective exercise specialist like myself. We are trained to help bridge that gap and do the preventative work and know when we need to refer out to a physical therapist.

I was only able to work with a PT once I messed up my knee, which of course would have never happened in the first place if I could have seen a physio to help me prevent it! And even with a knee injury I had to beg my (super unhelpful ortho) to refer me to a PT. Had to see THREE different doctors before I got the help I actually needed. The US healthcare system is STUPID. Granted, there’s lots of different healthcare systems around the world that are all quite stupid in their own way. But the US system is not only stupid, but insanely expensive. I pay more for my awful health insurance than I do for rent!!!!!

I think the 1 hr crazy hiit class is from the myth that you will burn a huge amount of calories in 1hr of high heart rate. It started in the 80's ,"cardio=weight loss" theory and it won't die. I wonder if you look at any of the GenX women fitness social media? or Dr Stacy Sims? I think most women in their late 40s and up have done all the trends and are realizing that we have to lift weights, do a lot of walking, and then a little HIIT and a little pilates on the side. I love pilates- I just work it in to all my strength sessions. Your mom needs her own pilates KZfaq!

Love your rant about the warm ups! I’ve recently started giving reassurance at the beginning of my classes that even though we are starting slower that we will move plenty and be challenged. I remember being on the other side of things and itching to move and being in the unhealthy mindset that I needed it to be hard for the whole hour in order for it to be a good class. I can sometimes sense the anxiety in the room when people feel like it’s not going to be hard enough for it to “count” I feel like a lot of teachers are probably feeling that pressure to get people moving and get them moving from the start.

I'm currently recovering from a rough case of grown up chicken pox. Still haunted by a little brain fog, fatigue and headache, so I did the first pilates workout you showed off in this video and it just felt so good to be doing at least something, even if I did the most low impact modifications. I'll add that to my rest days in my regular routine. Thank you, Keltie :)

One thing I've learned is that weight training is super important. Don't believe the hype that women don't need weight training or women will bulk. As you age, the body needs strength training to remain healthy. The bone and muscle loss will in perimenopause, and menopause for women can be improved simply by weight training. I've added in at least 2 days, typically 3 days of strength training. An easier way is by adding ankle weights or weight to my backpack while I am walking. Low impact, walking, and weight training (body weight exercise) are important.

I think girls would just be better off if we didn’t follow all these trends period. Our bodies are notttt fads, we are not meant to look like everyone else, and our workouts don’t HAVE to be what others do. Try the trends so you keep an open mind and can implement more tools into your toolbox! But know your toolbox can be full of different tools than your friend. Try different modalities of movement and training so you find YOUR fit and have a well-rounded routine.❤

I teach aerial hoop and pole dance. 1 hr classes. We warm-up for 10 minutes. Condition for 10 minutes. Then, learn moves for 35 minutes. Free dance and quick cooldown for the last 5. I do similar for the resistance band / strength class that I teach with more of a dedicated cooldown to let our bodies reset a bit for the day.

I started running recently (partly because of you so thank you for that) but I feel like I'm regressing these days. I look forward to the notification every Saturday that you have a new video! It makes my day. I just did a 3 week XB Pilates program and i absolutely loved it! I've never done pilates consistently. I usually save it for a "lazy" workout day when i don't feel like doing anything intense. However, after doing this program consistently for 3 weeks..it just felt good and fed my soul ❤ This video was perfect timing for me! Also, i can only workout 30 minutes a day. Anyhirng more than that is just too much for me. Its exhausting and time consuming and i just have too much going on so i agree with you about the fitness classes. They either need to be less than an hour or not as intense (or a longer warmup) to avoid burnout. Enjoy your weekend ❤

Commitment and consistency is key as I have found out through 8 years of strength and core training. Whatever you do you must get the blood moving around and train your nerves signaling movements, so why not 20 mins of stretch and warming up, followed by a whole hour of pilates? I could go for a weekly pilates 2 hour total workout. Always curious to find ways to counter act inflammation and aging

Now that you’ve done ballet, try to incorporate some of the elements of it in your Pilates workout! Joseph Pilates brought his movement technique from Germany to the US, and professional ballerinas were the first to add it to their cross training routine a long time ago… that tradition has passed on to professional ballerinas like me today. One of the things that takes it to the next level is remembering that in ballet, your arms end beyond your fingertips and your legs beyond your toes, so always active your feet and hands (unless the exercise calls for complete isolation of let’s say, the gluteus medius). Pilates is based on the book by Joe called Contrology: one of its core principles is:stabilize then move. IMHO, Pilates can be anything from a classical mat class(in Joe’s own words: all of the equipment he designed was created to help people with mat work!), to privates/semi privates and small groups in the classic Pilates equipment, to even huge “reformer” classes with their trademarked machines to make sure that they make a ton of money in the certification of teachers’ end (I know because I certify those teachers). Finally anything that is under the umbrella of functional training would please Joe. 4:27

Highly recommend checking out Justina Ercole on KZfaq. She’s a functional fitness trainer and has a big beef about classes not having a proper warm up, which she uses the term movement prep. The point is to warm up and activate the muscles you’re going to be using that class.

I completely agree with the lackluster warmups being a problem - I’ve been very fortunate to reach 40 with minimal fitness wear and tear and zero severe injuries (knock on wood), and I attribute that largely to balanced training - both with warmups and with alternating different fitness modalities running/biking/yoga/walking/weights repeat, etc. But anytime I did start only focusing on one thing I would get the body warnings that something was wrong or missing. Modern humans are inclined to obsess about fads and popular whatever and I think that’s a mistake - try new things but keep your base fitness foundations with tried and true and balance.

I think warm-ups need to be prioritised more. I'm not going to lie. Do I warm up, cool down, and stretch after the gym? No. Am I aware that this is something that I should be doing? Yes. Am I educated in how to do this? No. I'm a girlie who has learned what she knows from fitness classes and from buying programmes... of which, my last PT didn't give me warm-ups or cool downs, only the exercise program. But yes, I think that classes need to work more on warm-ups and after care. I would love to see more of these videos and would love to see Mama OC in future videos ❤xx

This is SUCH a weird question but what do you wear under your biker shorts?😅 I always have really unflattering lines even w thongs (so embarrassing lol). Any brand suggestions or something would be amazing 🙏🙏

It's kinda a mistery to me that in my local gym yoga and stretching stuff is always PACKED, but strength classes - I'm often alone who came. I don't mind, personal training at a price of a regular membership is a bargain, but like, why? Strength and resistance training can be so much fun!

Would it be okay to warmup at home and then drive there with 20 minutes or so between warmup and workout starting.
