Cast Iron Radiator Restoration Part 2: Removing Stubborn Shut-Off Valves

To recap from Part 1 - The "spud" wrench failed to remove the cast iron radiator shut-off fittings, now its on to option 2 - the pipe wrench. Heating up the contact area between the brass and cast with mapp gas does wonders

Thank you for these great videos I was wondering if you have any tips on getting the bleed valve section removed so that cast iron radiator can be disembled.

usually there are horizontal threaded rods that tighten on the ends. remove the nuts, then press each section apart. Make sure you have a source for new bushings, as there are many types - likely a local fabricated item from a machine shop milled with like materials.

I just remove the bushings... with pipe wrench

Yep, a pipe wrench works well sometimes, too. I lay out the 3 optuons for removal in case one method fails 1) spud wrench 2) pipe wrench 3) cut it out 👍

why not just take the bushing out

you and do that too, I like to lay out options for folks in case o e option or another doesn't work. Removing and replacing the valve and bushing may also cause additional part locating issues and sometimes they are super corroded and may pull the cast iron threads with the bushing...deeper disassembly can sometimes lead to increased chance of damaged components and leaks.
