In this video I show you how I assemble a Seiko 6309A movement after cleaning and inspecting the components for damage. This video is the 3rd part in a series of videos on the disassembly and then reassembly of the 6309. The video is targeted at complete novices to watch movements but for those who want to try their hand at some basic servicing and repairs.
I am in no way a professional. I am completely self taught and I have only had guidance from the internet.

Just finished my first automatic watch service ever. 😎 A Seiko 6309-8850 from 1982. Looking pretty good on the time grapher so far - but what a ride it was. Without your most helpful video series, I wouldn't have gotten on the horse in the first place, Mike. Thanks a bunch and greetings from Germany! Thomas

Hello Mike, I had commented to you about a month ago about me having trouble getting the train pivots aligned properly. Well, after realizing that my barrel was bent beyond recognition, i sourced a new one. Once that problem was fixed everything fell right into place as per your video. Thank you sir for putting this one out there for us noobs to follow. I'm ecstatic, My Watch is oiled properly and running. so far so good!

Just want to give a HUGE thank you for these videos, particularly the 6309 series. I went through them several times and was able to restore two 6309s to date, and it was all thanks to the detailed step-by-step narration you provided. Also expanding to 7009 movements, which (to borrow your term) I find much more "fiddly". Subscribed and on the lookout for more videos. If you have a wish list category going I would add this -- the utterly frustrating world of rings, spacers, dials, hands, lume, etc. Nothing like finishing the overhaul of a movement only to sit there looking at missing dial feet, bent day wheels, hands that hit the dial markers (are they the original hands???), broken spacers, etc. Lots of wizardry needed it seems to get a solid movement back into a case and working properly!

Outstanding instructional video, thank you so much for posting. I have a bunch of junker 6309 movements in my parts bin that I've always intended to practice tear-downs and assemblies with, but never really knew where or how to get started until I watched this series of yours. I followed you along step-by-step and got a non-running one back to running first try, which as you correctly note is very exciting!

This is a great first movement to work on as parts are plentiful and the movement itself it not that difficult. Really pleased for you Michael. Be careful that feeling of accomplishment is addictive!

Well Sir, I’ve wanted to get into watch repair and have been thinking in doing so for a time. My son unknowingly bought a franken watch from India and it stopped working. Perfect opportunity! Took it apart and stupidly didn’t take as many pictures as I should have. 🤷‍♂️ well I found a huge hair that had wrapped its way around the escape wheel and stopped the whole thing. Removed it and set about to put it back together....back to the picture thing... and to top it off it’s an Allwyn A6319. Searching on it come to find out it’s a seiko copy. Your video was immensely helpful in getting it back together. IT WORKS. Thanks for the good videos!

Hi, I would like to thank you massively for having created this series of 6309 videos. Using them along with the service sheet I have diagnosed and fixed a 6309 movement that did not wind via the rotor being down to a (non present !) pawl lever. Last night I succeeded in getting to the point of watching in awe as the my newly sourced and installed pawl lever engaged and then proceeded to charge the mainspring after I manually turned the rotor as per your video. You were totally on the mark when you said that You would feel a massive sense of accomplishment. Utterly amazing, my face was like my daughter’s on Christmas morning. Thank you so much. The bug has bitten me hard to repair now.

Its that feeling that I am addicted to. To see a watch run again from your own work is satisfaction guaranteed

My Retro Watches Up until reaching this point I was very content to modify / build watches (using working movements). Having torn apart a non-working movement and diagnosed and then rebuilt it and created a working movement, I now have opened a completely different side to the hobby that was not possible before. Addicted is an understatement. I have several non-runners (6309 / 7002’s) that I cannot wait to diagnose. Again I thank you. Bar none my number 1 KZfaq channel.

The only time I ever had less problems with my car was when I found an amateur hobby mechanic who went way beyond the call of duty in his work and my car ran flawless! With your video I was ready to tackle the rebuild of my old 6309-7149 I bought on the net for eight bucks! She's running like a sewing machine right now! So, thanks again.

great videos..mine stoped running face up and doesn't hold more then 30 mins reserve. First time disassembly and your video was spot on for me. although I still have the problem it's been narrowed down to the hairspring or the jewels holding it being broken or very dirty so next is disassembly of them. Thank you for making this video. keep them coming
@MyRetroWatches

neil2286 thanks for your comment. If your watch is only running in one position it will most likely be a bent pivot on the balance staff either top or bottom. Try to see also if the hairspring is sitting completely flat when in the movement. It could be a jewel however when I have had this problem it’s always a bent staff. Finding a donor 6309 from Ebay nice and cheap is probably the easiest solution. Look for the seller thewatchcollector in the Philippines he sells job lots of Seiko , find on with a few 6309s it will cost $20 or so delivered .

My Retro Watches thank you for the fast reply. I just bid on a replacement ends in a couple hours. That would make total sense. The balance wheel never oscillates very fast either. I have a couple other questions also....i have a part left over from the assembly. I pretty sure I know where it belongs but it wasn't covered in your Assembly. Very odd. It looks like a very small fork with two even smaller pin holes. It came off near the crown. If I could send you a picture somehow. Also...i can't get my seconds hand to stay in place. Either the second hand is damaged or forgive me I can't recall the name of the stem it mounts to..but otherwise that stem maybe damaged. Easier to just replace both parts with the donor?
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 6 жыл бұрын
neil2286 Neil either join my Facebook group Retro & Vintage Watches & Restorations or contact me on michael@myretrowatches.com Second hand not staying on could be worrying, doubtful the hand is at fault . Probably damaged / worn end of the fourth wheel. As for the part you have left this is also not good, obviously all parts need to be fitted correctly! Show me the pic and I will see what it must be. When disassembling always take a photo each time you remove a part, this way you know the position and sequence when you rebuild.

Patience. never force them. Its most likely the escape. If you have a microscope it takes seconds but with a loupe a bit longer . Just make sure the pivots are in in properly on the mainplate before placing the train bridge. I use an oiler to gently nudge them into place.

@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Thank you for your feedback and question. so when you have adjusted the speed what did you do? have you moved the regulating arm on the balance? these are not something you want to do unless you have a timergraph machine as they only require very small movements. if it has stopped by moving these then it can be because you have made it too short or you have even damaged it. I need to understand more of what you have done. Perhaps carefully remove the balance and place it on a flat surface with the wheel facing up so it fits back in its jewel this way you can examine the hairspring. you are looking for nice concentric circles . If you are really stuck and you take some photos either contact me via email on michael@myretrowatches.com or join the Facebook group. There are 3000 of us in there many of which can help you diagnose the issue. Link to the group is in the description.

Thomas Davis thanks for the kind words it’s really nice to hear the videos are helping others. As for oils there is allot of discussion to be found on Wrist Sushi forums on Seiko oils or indeed my Facebook group. That said I use Moebius D5 for keyless works and cannon pinion , for everything else I use Moebius 9010. Also 8200 for my mainsprings although arguably I should use one with graphite. If your just starting out it’s best to keep things fairly simple as oils are quite expensive and it will take years to use up 2ml bottle! All my oils I purchased from www.cousinsuk.com/ I know they do international shipping if you can’t find oils in your own country (if your not in uk)

Got any helpful tips on removing that barrel cover to get to the mainspring?
@thomasdavis3747
@thomasdavis3747 5 жыл бұрын
The dismantle video in this series will give you a great step by step breakdown on how to do just that. As for tips, Be sure to let the barrel run out before attempting to dismantle or carefully release the power out of the barrel before removing. The bridge is held by three screws clearly shown in the video, make sure those are the ones you take out first. The bridge is very easy to remove, it will take more work to put back on. You will feel the gear pivots slip into the jewels. If you don't feel it click in, you haven't done it right. This video series was a great resource to have while assembly and disassembly.
@MyRetroWatches

fmcmla to access the mainspring easily once the barrel is removed from the movement you need to place it on a hard surface that will take some pressure without marking . Place the barrel on this surface as it sits in the movement ( threaded hole facing up) at this point I put my finger nails on the top of the teeth of the barrel and push down . What happens is the lid comes lose enough to remove it with some tweezers. You have to be careful with the lid removal especially with the stud in the middle as you could uncontrollably uncoil the mainspring which is dangerous especially to your eyes. I’ve never had one uncoil at this point though . Once the lid is off you can remove the mainspring by hand using your thumbs to unravel controllably.
@fmcmla
@fmcmla 5 жыл бұрын
Found internet advice on barrel lid removal using can (duster) air on ETA7750. Trick worked on the 6309 barrel except lid was actually on the teeth side of barrel (bottom side as it sits in movement). Didn't lose arbor or have mainspring fly off unexpectedly on me. Used the alternating thumb technique to slowly let the mainspring unravel from the barrel body. Very dry mainspring. Still very springy and shiny. There's some yellowish coloration on bottom of barrel body. Great channel, btw. Also joined your Facebook group. A wealth of information.

Hello, to my knowledge this is all that is for so you cant get them mixed up, not that it would be easy to as they would not fit in the wrong place. Other Seikos I have done do not have these holes in the wheels.

It's too bad you didn't show lubrication. But, I guess, one could get it from looking at the Seiko oiling charts...

The tremor is from an overactic autonomic nervous system , to get rid of it squueze your fists or push your hands together for a few seconds I dare say you shall get that screw in, get the hand on the watch or what ever it is .
