Darren and viewers, I made my version of this tool and tested it on my 2007 Airstream. It failed the leak down test. I don't own a sniffer. Soap bubble testing and no leaks found at accessible joints, hoses regulator etc. I continued the testing but using a gas fitting plug I eliminated each gas appliance by disconnecting its service line and plugging the service line one at a time. When I finally did the furnace it passed the leak down test. I removed the furnace gas valve and connected it directly to service propane line. With the propane on I put soapy water over the orifice. It blew bubbles. New furnace solenoid valve and all's well. Using the gas line plug did the process of elimination test for me. Thanks Darren, Gary in SC

Darren, I had a customer with a leak and I couldn't find with my test equipment. Come to find out it was the Dometic Range manifold that was leaking periodically. The Dometic range had a recall on it to change the gaskets for the burners. Hope this helps if the lp detector goes off again. Thanks for all your wisdom and videos. We appreciate you down here in Louisiana.

So Darren, we live in a 40' Motorhome and just had the propane tank filled a week or so ago, and had some COLD nights! After being filled, we ran the furnace and water heater on LP so good use! Now I notice the digital LED fuel level light went down a notch from "Full" to "2/3" and that makes sense. When it warmed up this week into the 70's (nice in December in Raleigh area!) the Full LED light back up for awhile! So that tells me that when things do warm up, the apparent fuel level of the LP tank can change. Methinks there is a better way to measure the amount of fuel in the tank, but weighing the tank would cost something - just for accuracy's sake? Not. Anyhow love the video and the side bar explanations thrown in at no additional cost are great too! Keep it up!

Very informative video. If I may , first think is to know the regulator capacity in btu's according to his orifice. For the U gage , instead of colored water, there's a liquid for colder temperature.

Thanks for the information on the oil and where it comes from. I was told from a service center it was from the cylinders. Replaced both and 2 regulators and the flow just seems less. Now I know how to really check the system.

It's good practice not to use soap because it contains alkaline..which is corrosive to certain metals especially under the stove top, etc.

Is there a difference between high flow and high pressure propane regulators and hoses? I've recently helped two different neighbors install tank less water heaters that require 11 columns of water, and so we used the existing regulators. They seem to be working fine, but if they could be working even better that would be great.
@MyRVWorks
@MyRVWorks 2 жыл бұрын
There are basically three types of regulators for RV use. Low-capacity, standard-capacity, and high-capacity. It has to do with how many BTUs can pass through the regulator. The water column remains the same but the flow is greater. As a standard best practice, when we install an on-demand water heater we always upgrade the regulator and pigtails to high-capacity ones. Typically the high-capacity regulator is green in color and the high-capacity pig tails have red connectors instead of green connectors.

Just found this on the internet as a blog comment - so it must be correct?? Here is the quote: "Shutting the tank off and burning the gas left in the hose should solve the problem. By leaving high pressure in the hose with the change in temperatures since you last used it may have caused the vapor in the line to change back into liquid form causing the oil." That's interesting. BTW - I have found an oily covering on the propane tank fittings on my gas grill and I do not lubricate them! Be well my friend.

ummm... propane does have oil in it.
@robertgarbe6348
@robertgarbe6348 2 жыл бұрын
Yep it is a petroleum product and lubricating oil is used in pumping equipment and compressors all along the line and can end up at the terminal point of supply. Not usually a big deal unless you get a big plug of it in your tank and then it can choke the regulator.
@RADMAN752
@RADMAN752 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertgarbe6348 good point, and also the mercapton they add to it. God I hate getting that smell out of the van when a wet regulator and hoses are replaced.
@thehomewizard1
@thehomewizard1 2 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking, "liquid petroleum" gotta be oil based. Of course the pressure keeps it in liquid form. (As it's not usually -44° outside) In AZ That being said, I have a Coleman grill that has regulator on it, so, instead of getting & hauling another tank, I tapped the line before the regulator with quick disconnect & ran a separate supply (essentially direct to tank) used regular rubber air hose to extend it 15-20' to the grill. Clogged my grill orifices on a couple occasions. Blew out the hose, cleaned the orifices & tried again, same, same. Could be that all that rubber hose VS. propane hose (buried 6" so I won't trip) cools & heats up (connected all day)/ or is so long that the pressure drops and liquifies (think of condensation), could be it leaches oil out of the hose. I do know it worked much better with the polypropylene hose than the nice rubber hose. Surely all the above interactions. Been moving around, so I use the shorter propane hose for a while now

Oh man, you may be very smart, but your manic video is very confusing. You get off on tangents that are in themselves not helpful. You need to explain in a linear fashion. You are so tangential that this can ALMOST be considered comedy. Your oil leaching tangent was a trip and a half. Good luck.
