I think the winner is the cheaper filter overall. The Gold is probably a better filter but as someone who changes their oil seasonal, and not having 3K of each of my cars during that period, the Gold is not worth the xtra cost to me.

Wow! What a change. When I bought NAPA Platinum, Gold, and Silver filters for our shop back before I retired all of them were made in Gastonia, NC at the WIX/Affinia facility. That was before the take over by MANN+Hummel. Cost to manufacture must have something to do with it. Times change eh?!

Two more oil filters with coil springs - what will the stamped leaf retainer springs believer do? With a $6 gap between the two filters, there is space for the PurolatorONE PL22500 filter with a synthetic blend media with a rating of 99% at 20 microns and a silicone anti-drainback valve. At a price of about $10 at most sellers, it is at the sweet spot between the two filters in the video and is also made by Mann + Hummell. Plus, since it isn't a Napa filter sold only at Napa stores, you can price compare at different stores - for example, Menards has the PurolatorONE PL22500 at $7.49. Thanks Pete for another excellent comparison of two filters for the same vehicle at different price points and thanks Paul for supplying the specimens.

I work for Honda but drive a Toyota. I get a discount at my local Toyota since I work at a dealership nearby, they give me a discount on Toyota parts surprisingly. Basic price for a Toyota oil filter there is usually $7.99. I get it for $4 . $4 for an oem toyota oil filter isn’t bad by any means. I stick with oem parts and oil filters. I’ll sometimes use the Wix oil filters which are great.

Wix has shifted almost all Wix-branded filters to either China or Mexico factories depending on the part #. Interestingly, the Wix U.S. factory now makes most of the Purolator filters. Both Wix and Purolator are now divisions of Mann & Hummel of Germany.

Craziest thing. Last night, a friend and I went to O’Reilly to grab him an oil filter for a change. We looked at the Wix 57356 and noticed that two were made in USA with the silicone adbv. The others on the line were all the plastic-wrapped, rubber adbv China-made filters. We each grabbed the only two USA filters (as they both fit our vehicles). I just did an oil change on my car but wanted to snatch that filter for the next one. Couldn’t believe those two were there, still USA-made

I do not use Wix filters as a rule. I have had them cause valvetrain noise or startup noise on various different engines, but especially Buick, Olds, Pontiac, and Cadillac (including 4.3/5.7 diesels), that take the PH11/PH25 size filter. For that size, the Proformer is made by Premium Guard, and is one of the better filters. The STP S25, Parts Plus PH24, Pentius PLB25, Microgard 51258, and Microgard Select MSL51258, are all also Premium Guard filters. So pretty much wherever you go, you can buy the same filter in different colors. The Parts Plus PH24 is the cheapest, at $3, but the Microgard Select has the silicone gasket and ADBV for $10. Special order only though. The NAPA golds for that size are often 10 years old or more, the ADBVs are hard as rock and stop sealing after a day or two. Meanwhile, the various different Premium Guard filters have nice soft ADBVs, sometimes nitrile, sometimes silicone, always have a crimped seal and coil spring.

They all need to keep check of their quality. I tried a Bosch Premium and a Mobil 1 filter on my 2000 Ford Ranger V6. Both drained out overnight and caused rod knock for about 3 seconds at start up. Purolator Fram TG do not, so those I stick with. I returned each of the other filters right away, and got a refund. To this day I do not know why their ADBV did not work. Both were silicone.

Not 100% sure who is making the Prorformer, could be M&H or someone else. The Gold has enhanced media, meaning some fiberglass content. Proformer, 100% cellulose. Again, can't really compare media types based solely on microscopic view. Or, at least I can't. Price aside, of the two I'd take the Gold. If I was looking for the better value, I'd grudgingly take the Proformer. Not a particular fan of the country of origin of either filter. It's too bad the Gold/(Wix) not made in US as most have been in past, M&H doing. Thanks for vid

They both are decent oil filters and each have their own strong points although the Napa Gold IMHO is very over-priced considering all of the better/cheaper competition. Based on the quality and feature level of the Gold, it should be priced more in the $8 range. I had much higher expectations for the gold. I really think Napa is shooting itself in the foot, raising prices on products like the Gold filter just as the quality of them are going down, all while Napa seems to be replacing many Made in U.S.A. filters with foreign made ones, being that I know many people that would go to Napa primarily to pick up their oil filters, and while thy were there, they'd also pick up some motor oil with it even though they knew they could get oil cheaper at Walmart, they didn't want to bother with making an extra trip so just purchase everything together at Napa but as people begin to realize what's happening with the Napa Gold and other Napa filters the same people are going to loose their reason and motivation for going to Napa in the first place and either switch to Walmart or ordering online in quantity from RockAuto, Summit, or other discounters.

Just curious, ever remove the louvered core after use and put a light source to the outlet opening? Was that 30% done that way? In my experience, views of louvers from outlet on unused filters can be deceptive. And louvers open in two directions, to outlet flange, also toward dome. Also, 'always' more louver openings than holes in the metal tube. Used may filters with louvers, never an issue.

@@faxmen09 I didn’t use any scientific method for observing the louvers other than a 55 year old eyeball 😂 I did use a glasses repair screw driver to forcefully try to open the louvers that appeared closed but wasn’t happy with that method. I went ahead and installed it. After about a 1000 miles I found an unused Nissan oil filter in my garage and noted the louvers were quite noticeably open. I then ran to the only open store in my town which was a Walmart and got a SuperTech filter with the silicone adbv. I felt better knowing that there was more flow with the nylon cage. Probably not a big deal, but it’s for my company fleet vehicle and it needs to last another couple years.

@@haroldbeauchamp3770 Fwiw, I like the Super Tech MP series filters, but don't believe the nylon cage flows more than louvers or holes. Total area of louvers or holes only has to be equal to the inner diameter area of the block filter mounting stud. Confident both types generally greater than that. The NAPA Gold has a Nickname of "The Gaper"I believe due to the space in the pleats and the price difference (higher) than othet filters

Used many made in the US Napa Gold 7356 and 1348 over the years. Got them ~$4 at local Napa 40% off semi annual sale. Never experienced in use or heard of the quoted name before. Not the same filters now though.

@@faxmen09 Over the years the quality and country of orgin has changed. We buy a lot filters on a daily basis.NAPA has priced themselves out of the picture even with a dealer discount.

@@user-hs9gp7po9t Yeah, I would never have paid top retail for Napa Gold/(wix) oil filters. But, on the semi-annual Gold filter sale local Napa store had, an excellent value. Since local store has dropped sale, and Gold not the filters they were just a year ago, I've moved on to other brand oil filters.

Napa shot themselves in the foot when they raised the price of the golds to 13 dollars or whatever it is and then even more so charging so much for Napa brand oil when I can get a Fram ultra and pure blooded valvoline for like 20 bucks cheaper at Walmart.

Hard to say... Probably the Performer. Less inlet holes but better looking filter media under the microscope 🔬. Both has silicone ADBV, pressure relief valves but thicker can and denser filter media on the Performer. Performer. I always use Fram ULTRA though. Nice comparison either way. Eye opening and interesting. 👍

Another awesome video! The performer looks like a solid filter except for that extra glue that is concerning. Could a piece break off and get into the engine? The weight difference was surprising.

Hi K Beg, Thanks! I guess if a small piece of glue broke off and the filter went into bypass it could go thru?

That glue is extremely tough stuff.. Try and tear it off. Good Luck! Digging it out with a knife isn't very easy!
