Not sure if your view count is still the same, but the last few videos you made I wasn't notified, even though i clicked "all" on the bell. The lower end Microgard filter is the reason I started watching Whip City oil filter reviews about a year ago. The O'Reilly store near me was out of my normal oil filter (the Wix XP). But the guy behind the parts counters said the Microgard filter was just as good as the Wix XP. After a little research I learned the the guy at the parts counter was incorrect. I would never purchase the lower tier Microgard again. The Wix XP was harder to find during the pandemic.(at least the places where I shop)

That regular microgard is a wix made filter. I hate louvers on oil filter. I've had a couple of wix filters that the louvers are not even cut open/punctured correctly not allowing oil to flow thru. Good thing I noticed it before I installed it. Ever since then I stayed away from Wix and Wix made filters. Now that Select filter looks amazing lots of holes in the core and silicone valve and gasket. Looks like it's going to be my go to filter from now on.

Unless you have a very specialized vehicle (I.E., race car, exotic, or specialty car for examples) any name brand oil filter will work fine in your daily driver. More important is if you want your engine to last, dump the filter and oil every 5,000 miles. Use a full synthetic oil and your engine will never fail due to an oil or filter issue.

I use the regular Microgard filter mainly because I was given a box of those things. Can't argue with free. They're not as good as the Microgard Select, but the regular Microgard will still do a good job for everyday commuting on an ordinary car that's stock and will remain that way ... and where the oil and filter are changed every 5k ... and it's still better than Fram.

I just cut open a regular Microgaurd MGL51394 and was quite impressed with the build quality. It had a coil spring, button bypass, nice filter medium with uniformly spaced pleats. It had a lot more pleats than the filter in the video. No sloppy gluing. My filter had holes instead of louvers. It had an oil ring style seal like Japanese filters. Made in India. Seems to be a lot variation on where these filters are made vs part number. I agree the one in the video made in Mexico is not good. The MGL51394 fits a John Deere X534 tractor with a 25 HP Kawasaki twin.

I find it amusing that so many people think that Microguard makes filters. That is just a brand name that has their filters made by one of major filter manufacturing companies. They source filters from different manufacturers, depending on whether the regular or select, and depending on what filter it is.

Really comparing two different levels of filters by two different manufacturers. MGL, basic jobber filter. Select more equal to standard Wix/Napa Gold. The most interesting thing is that the MSL has a filter bypass where not required or needed. This application for vehicles with block bypass. If the filter bypass psi lower than block, then it would be opening at lower than intended psi. More bypass events. As bypass events rare, likely no big deal though. Thanks for vid.

@@SlikLizrd 99% at .25 microns? that's better than mobile one or k&n gold. If this had a backing screen it would be the perfect oil filter design. .20 microns can be too restrictive if there isn't enough media, which often happens. If this were made in USA it would be the hands down best.
@SlikLizrd
@SlikLizrd Жыл бұрын
@@bcrocks3935 NAH. There is NO Oil Filter currently available that has an " at .25 Microns" rating. Notice your Decimal Point -- it changes "25 Microns" to "1/4th of 1 Micron" -- which ain't possible in an automotive oil filter. The "backing screen" that was found in some earlier versions was often praised as a great feature, but it was only TEMPORARY, as it was soon replaced with a thinner, lighter, polymer (plastic) material that stiffened the filter, but allowed for MORE PLEATS at the same time. There really is NO BEST OIL FILTER that meets EVERYONE'S requirements -- we each have to research what is best for OUR OWN vehicles. I've been driving since 1958 -- all 50 states, 3 Canadian Provinces, and 3 Mexican Estados. My many years of experience with different brands of Oil & Filters, on all types of roads, in all types of climate, gives me a distinct advantage when selecting the proper lubricants for my vehicles. In my Ford V-8 (180,000 miles), I run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, 5-W-30; Bosch Premium Oil Filter # 3410; and a FilterMag Magnet Kit. OCI at 5,000 miles. I've been looking forward to this match-up. Well... I must say, I'm somewhat disappointed in both filters. The "select" is definitely the better of the two. I would not use the regular one, even if it was free. What I don't like is a company that offers a filter so little to offer. It makes me think their entire lineup is crap. Based on this examination of both filters... I think I'll stick with my WIX/NAPA Golds... Nothing here to get excited about.

Actually, I believe both filters are made by Wix / Purolators parent company - Mann Hummel. As a long time Wix devotee, I've actually switched to the Microgard Select s as it more resembles the older Wix design versus the newer Purolator based design.

@@chrisbehan6451 It appears we both have the same opinion on the Microgard Select filters. Built very well! It's a bit sad though as I've always used WIX filters and this is the first time in years I've switched brands.

@@johng.4959 If you look at the design, Wix are now essentially Purolators. Including: 1. louvers instead of holes in the center tube who's flow is heavily dependent on tight stamping tolerances. Have seen a couple with dubious-sized openings. And I have a suspicion they get the XP to go 20K miles by loosening the filter media so the filter catches less, which is why the sub-competitive micron efficiencies. To me, the Microgard Select is as close as I can get to the old Wix design. Just my preference...

The regular microguard is almost as bad as a Fram, just more expensive. No way I'd use it on a car I liked.

Very interesting comparison, Whip !! Same brand name, but two different quality levels -- and one of 'em has NO quality at all !! The Microgard Regular has a (rare) proper date code, and the Black color cools the oil a tiny bit, but otherwise, is a total failure. The MicroGard Select is clearly superior to the Regular, but the poor Micron Rating means that I would NOT buy it, either. The standard that I accept for oil filtration is: "ISO # 4548-12 at 20 Microns". Neither of these filters even comes CLOSE !! Noted that both have the dreaded Coil Spring, but the Select has a THICKER cannister and a SOFTER coil spring, which reduces the chance of cannister distortion that normally comes with the use of the Coil Spring. The "Select" gets the nod for the plastic film Cover, the thicker Cannister, the thinner Coil Spring, the Silicone ADBV, the Silicone Gasket, and the larger Media Surface area. Too bad that it's not made in U.S.A. Your exclusive "Microscopic View" shows us at a glance that the "Regular" Microgard has what appaers to be HOLES in the filter media. I mean, WTF !?? The "Regular" Microgard gets a definite "DO NOT BUY!" rating -- we have to draw the line SOMEWHERE !! Although it's the best of these two filters, I would not use the "Select" model for more than 5,000 miles under any circumstances. We gotta keep leaning on the oil filter Manufacturers to PUT THE MICRON RATING ON THE BOX -- so we KNOW what level of filtration that we're buying.

@@WhipCityWrencher While it's a nice thought, as a general rule OEM oil filter efficiency is proprietary. As long as they aren't required to publish efficiency, not likely more will do it voluntarily.
