WHAT WAS I THINKING?! Messy To Minimal Extreme Kitchen Declutter + reacting to my FIRST VIDEO!
OOOOOOOOKAY! It's time to declutter my kitchen for the new year! Today, I'm getting some inspiration and motivation from ME! That's right I'm going back 3 years to my very first Messy To Minimal episode and reacting to that video.
If you are new here, hey! I am Natalie - follower of Jesus, wife to my childhood best friend, and homeschool mama to three.
I’m also the ORIGINAL creator of “MESSY TO MINIMAL”- a widely-popular extreme decluttering and home organization series that I started in 2020. In the course of about a year, my husband and I worked to simplify our home and lifestyle. With our first pass through our home we got rid of over 80% of our possessions. Nowadays, we’re not keeping track of the number, because decluttering is more of a maintenance task to invest into the health and simplicity of our home and family life moving forward!
I continue to share this series as a way to completely DEMOLISH the idea that decluttering is a one and done activity (especially in a home with young children!) I am here to give you non-judgmental encouragement and some gentle motivation for your own decluttering and simple-living journey!
If you’re just tuning in to this series or would like a refresher here’s that full playlist: • MESSY TO MINIMAL SERIES

Fellow neurodivergent messy mama 🙋🏼‍♀️ I think you being authentic in your messy to minimal series is the reason why it did so well. You helped us messy moms learn that it can be totally normal to have a house that isn’t always picture perfect. I appreciate that you have maintained that authenticity and relatability throughout the years 🧡

I also appreciate seeing the journey from a neurodivergent lense. Finding youtubers like Natalie, Dana K. White and Clutterbug, watching them break down the process and seeing how immensely beneficial decluttering can be to those of us with neurodivergent minds has improved my life beyond words.

I am SOOO excited for this series! Natalie, you are SUCH a blessing! I know in your "chatty" video you were concerned about not being "funny" or "sassy" enough, but, Sis, honestly, I wouldn't change A THING about you! Your heart--so feminine and vulnerable and strong and honest--and your love for Jesus and honoring Him in your family and EVERY area of life (including homemaking) is why I watch your channel. 💖 Stay true to Him and to who He has made YOU to be... because THAT is what inspired the rest of us in so many fun, practical, and breathtakingly beautiful ways! 🤗💖💐 (So funny: I knew when you said "Killing two birds with one stone" there would be comments following...😂)

Natalie, this was really a fabulous video. It’s amazing how many things you got rid of after how many times you have already gone through your kitchen. And I like what you said about how it’s OK to get rid of things that you feel you’re attached to and that you’re okay afterwards. It’s so true. Thank you for taking the time to make all your videos. I appreciate it more than you’ll ever know. It helps me so much!!! 🍳

I love when you said “I’ve never been a tidy person, I’ve just been good at hiding stuff”. I feel like this spoke to me on a deeper level when it comes to emotions and the overwhelming nature of motherhood on multiple levels. I’m good at hiding things. If I was honest and decluttered things physically and mentally I’ll have less anxiety, and that’s exactly what your videos have done for me in the past several months in a hard season. Thank you for your honesty and for sharing your life and perspective ❤

You're SO RIGHT when you say it gets easier/faster to declutter. We've been minimal on & off for about 8 years. We moved this summer & I'm on maternity leave & decided to declutter my WHOLE HOUSE. But after making a list of the rooms/areas I want to go thru, it's actually not that overwhelming/scary. Moving into a smaller house & having my second kid has really shown me that I'm DONE taking care of stuff that we're not using. I'd rather spend my time having fun with my kids than cleaning/pickingup/taking care of our STUFF.

Okay, I have to say that as someone who only started watching your channel after you moved into this house, this really hit me in a good spot. I didn't know you came from a place so much more relatable than the beautiful, organized place you are now. And I love and need your comments about feeling safe while decluttering. I would NEVER have thought it in those words, but as someone who grew up quite poor and is still on a tight budget, I sure have had to identify and let go of that anxiety around keeping things I don't actually need. Thank you for the never ending sweet encouragement.

It’s fun for me even to watch that video and reflect on how I’ve changed since then when it comes to intentional living. Being a young newlywed I’ve found a lot of encouragement in your journey and it’s helped me to grow in confidence in this new role as a wife where I feel very green and sometimes discouraged. You’ve really inspired a lot of learning and encouragement even if you felt “unqualified” and vulnerable at the start. Such a fun journey!

The dreaded spice cabinet. I only have 3 drawers in my kitchen, but one of them is dedicated to spices. I have them all placed upright in mostly matching spice bottles and labels on the top. Being able to look at all of them from the top down has been a game-changer! No more reaching to the back of a cabinet and knocking everything out in order to find something. :)

This is what we do too! I did the matching containers slowly- I buy the “nice” organic glass versions of my spices when I run out of them and then refill those glass jars with the cheaper spices when I run out now! Has been awesome for my kitchen and they only take up one small drawer right next to the stove.

Thank you for this inspiring video!! It's always amazing that no matter how often we declutter, we can always find more to declutter. I like your idea of putting a date on something and if it hasn't been used in a while to get rid of the item! We are empty nesters now and so I am on a roll about downsizing. We have 6 grandchildren who live 4 hours away. We generally go to their homes to visit so I don't need all the stuff I have here. I keep a donation box in a spare bedroom and try to put something in it every day. Amazing what I can come up with to get rid of. I appreciate your openness to share your cupboards!! Thank you again and wishing you a wonderful new year!

The look back is so fun to watch, and I appreciate the grace you show to your younger self! I don’t know if your kitchen could accommodate this, but our current home has a drawer where decanted jars of spices fit lying down, and it makes me joyful every single time I open it. It also stays surprisingly orderly because there’s nothing to reach behind and knock down! I know you’re not a decanting girl, but if you ever wanted to take a weekly task off your list, it’s worked well for us. :)

I probably started my own messy to minimal journey around the time you did and am also at that stage where it's no longer scary or complicated to put the things that no longer serve us in the donation bin. I've also just got a lot of things that aren't in their homes at the moment and it feels good to give everything a solid reset.

It's been really tough for me personally the past 15years not knowing I had ADHD and trying to deal with only treating half of my symptoms. Now with my correct diagnosis and new concoction of medicine I am finally breaking out of the stone I had been stuck in and feeling able to declutter my life and I think about you often while I am. When you first started I was not in a good place. It was hard to watch you when I wanted to so badly do what you were doing but so much shame because I couldn't do the thing. Or when I did it wasn't right. Not knowing why I couldn't or felt so bad when I did. Coming back now I see you in an entirely different light and I want to thank you for the initial seeds that would help me see myself and situation clearly.

You have come so far Natalie in not just your decluttering but your self confidence. I’ve never heard of cutlery being called flatware. Perhaps it’s an American thing as I’m British. Good shout on using what you already own. I did a similar thing with ours and switched the ‘posh’ stuff to the every day stuff. It worked out great. I keep my spices in a containers and simply lift the containers out when I use my spices. It keeps them tidy and it’s easier to see everything I have. Have done this for several years and it’s worked brilliantly.

I'm the same way...alittle bit more stuff goes that I "couldn't" part with before. 🙂 And the more that I declutter, the more I want to declutter more. 😉

🍳 We all have to start somewhere I have decluttered for 5 years and only just to a point where I feel the inventory is correct for us. Now it's mostly about being mindful of what comes into the house. Glad your doing messy to minimal

Natalie you have been so hard on yourself. The journey you have been on will have helped so many. The coffee cart baskets will be elsewhere in your home I’m sure. I wish I could afford to reshape all my stuff but I don’t

Hi Natalie! I can’t tell you how inspirational your videos are to me! Living in a compact NYC apartment has encouraged me to declutter and keep things minimal my whole life, and your videos reaffirm and inspire me to regularly declutter, so thank you! I thought I’d share the spice storage solution that I use with you, in case you want to try it. I no longer buy spices in bulk because we just don’t have the storage space for leftovers, so this is perfect for standard store spice jars. I got two on Amazon, and after YEARS of dealing with clutter spices, I’ve now spent the last 4 years with an organized system. 🎉 I purchased “YouCopia Original SpiceStack 18-Bottle Spice Rack Organizer with Universal Drawers, Silver, Small”, but there are probably similar versions as well. Thanks for being such an inspiration!!
