If your dumb stoner friend accidentally barricaded your sauna’s door with a ladder and then peaced out for the night, leaving you to roast alive in the grown-up version of an easy bake oven, what would you do?
This rustic sauna is built like a brick shithouse, so busting out the old fashioned way isn’t gonna work. And at a sweltering 180 degrees fahrenheit, our blood will be boiling by the time our friend wakes up from his nap. It’s up to us to Macgyver a way out.
I’m going to break down the mistakes made by our hot couples, see if we can make better decisions and ultimately attempt to beat the HUMAN OVEN in 247 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.

Sauna expert here (I'm Finnish lol), the door is built the wrong way. There is supposed to be gap underneath so fresh air can get in. Also the best way to stay alive in this kind of situation is to stay close to the floor as hot air rises up. The issue with Ian reaching out to dislodge the ladder is twofold. One, he's not going to be able to shove his shoulder through, forcing his arm through at an angle which will limit his reach. And two, that measurement is from shoulder to fingertip, not shoulder to palm. Ian would need incredibly long arms to be able to not only touch the ladder at the awkward angle, but have a long enough reach to grip it as opposed to simply poking it. Additionally, any glass remaining in the porthole would cut him up. Same issue with the thermostat.

Sauna benches are often made from Aspen since it doesn't transfer heat very well. It's also a fairly brittle type of wood so I bet you could break one off, then i would break off a piece slightly wider than the ladder, tie on a towel just a bit off center so that it dangles at a bit of an angle, lower it down between the bars on the ladder, and when i pull it upp again it would hook itself onto the ladder and be secured since it's wider than the ladder. Then just give it a lil yank.

Not the same issue with the thermostat as it is incredibly close to the door. The ladder is almost impossible to reach even with a 34 shoulder to hand measurement but that thermostat being next to the frame was easily accessible.

Another idea for survival, since they have towels, remove all of the coals from the heater and let them cool. It will drastically reduce the heat in the room. Also, Michael didn’t check his phone after he sobered up and realized he hasn’t heard anything from his friends, but thinks they went to a party? Their car would have still been there. I think it should have warranted at least a call and I am sure the phones would have rang inside the house. Finally…that ladder in theory shouldn’t have blocked them in, it wasn’t wedged in there correctly for that. However, if they were able to move the benches, I would have had all of my friends try and ram the door with a bench. It would be worth a try.

The inner thermostat measures the inside temperature, and it's wires (optimally two) may have been exposed when it was broken, and the heather kicked in for maximum. At this point, they needed to either separate the wires or connect them, whichever turns the heather down. It uses low voltage so it's safe to do. May work or may not, but that inner thermostat was a possible weak point, and they didn't tried to either connect or separate it's exposed wires to see which one turns the heather down a.k.a. Give the regulator the HOT ROOM signal. Older thermostats work based on hot/cold-on/off system, and the wire-trick would work there 100%!

by infinite, I mean the maximum amount of voltage, you'd read this as an arbitrary value you'd read off of a analog component, so you'd read that it gave you 1023, and that means that it's giving you the max amount of voltage it can go, and ALWAYS signifies either a short, or that the component is not grounded. Both are critical errors. I just had an embedded programming exam like 2 weeks ago :D.

@@RS-fy9hb My bf is an electrician, and has worked on ACs. I was there, when he studied about temperature regulation methods, using both just a single thermostat to measure the rooms temperature, or two thermostat where one measures the outside and one the inside temp. and regulates the machine accordingly. I know nothing about saunas, but the temp-regulator circuit most likely works with DC and thus the inner thermostat could be fooled with the exposed wires...I am super not sure about this, but I'd gave it a try, and watch the heather go to max or die out. And yup, building in fail safes are always a good idea, but sometimes less is cheap. Most likely the movie one was a cheap build without built-in fail safes.

There should also be a flame sensor on the sauna heater. So putting out the flame would have caused the gas to shut off. Assuming it is a home made sauna and he didn't add a single safety feature, they could find the gas line and kink the copper tubing running to the burner. Other than that the could have used towels and clothing to hook the thing in front of the door. Another idea would be if he didn't blow the breaker to try to connect the wires from the thermostat to the mains voltage from the lighting. You'd be sure to cause some damage to the thermostat and likely cause it to fail in the off position.

As a Finn, I immediately thought "How is this a challenge?" A proper sauna would have ventilation, most saunas I have been in have the heat controls on the inside and I have never felt anything colder than the floor of a sauna. Heat rises up, so you just need to stay close to the ground. It isn't getting hotter and hotter unless it was warming up, and why would you even go in a lukewarm sauna? The heat isn't even the true problem, it's the liquid you are sweating out, but can't you normally survive a couple of days with no water? Dehydration might be a problem, but only after a very prolonged time, like the entire night (if you stay at ground level). Shouldn't there be water in the sauna to begin with? How are you supposed to make löyly happen with no steam? Truth is, a sauna is just a decently hot room, and unless you decide to endure copious amounts of steam near the ceiling, it's not really that bad. But, to be fair, I've yet to see the movie. Maybe it's just a poorly thought out deathtrap.

@jomahawk7488

That made me think of the tragedy of Apollo 1. All three Astronauts in the capsule perished from a fire in the control center because they couldn’t open the inward swinging door. The pressure differential caused by the fire rapidly consuming all the oxygen in the environment. I know this doesn’t answer your question, but it’s where my mind went

Here's another way of beating it. Break the thermostat with the rock. Take the bare wires and unscrew the bulb in the light next to it. Connect the wires to the mains voltage. This will expose the temperature control unit to much higher voltage and current than it was designed for. This will almost certainly destroy the circuit that is used to read the temperature and cause the heater to shut off.

Heaters do have a shut off features if the fire gets blown out, there are thermocouples that close gas valves if their temperature gets low (generally for around 5-10 seconds) which is why you have to hold your clicker in for 20 seconds after the pilots lit because it will shut off due to low temp untill around 20 seconds of being over the pilot flame

You shouldn't be! It's a very inexpensive, "easy", way to make a movie, and a lot of horror in general is low budget. It only needs 1 "good" set (the inside), and it provides good reason for a very limited number of actors. It also helps out those actors a lot since they don't have to move/transition, have easy continuity, fewer costumes, more face time etc. "Bottle" movies/episodes are usually the cheapest to produce, followed by found footage.

I'm a electrical engineer. Since the heat sensor was exposed with wire. It would be super easy to bypass. 1st. open the cover smashing the case like they did. 2nd identify how the temperature signal is sent: usually thermocouple. 3rd see mode of operation: short-circuit, open circuit. if none works, reattach the thermocouple and put the warm rock on it. Now the temperature is down. If lucky, one of this modes (short, open, high heat) will trigger the safety and turn off the fire. easy peasy. Difficult: medium-low or, plugging the gas also works I guess.

Concerning reaching the thermostat outside the sauna, you forget one important point : the thickness of the door. If the door is too thick (and I guess it is, because it has to be perfectly hermetic), even by using something to elevate himself, Ian wouldn't be able to use his arm's full lenght because the part between shoulder and elbow would be limited in movement by the door. He would only be able to use the lenght left after his elbow to try to reach the thermostat, which would clearly not be enough.

@MDmon

I would've instinctually removed all of the rocks from the heater and sought to sabotage the units. since I would never overpower the door, I'd smash the window, and call for help. You could also use the rocks to hurl them through the portal, for greater annoying effects. I'd look for a safety manual switch to turn it off. Being familiar with both electrical and electronics, I would've taken the sensor apart and turned the heater. NO or NC The sensor switches the heater on and off, so there are two particular wires (low voltage) that could disconnect the heater's switching circuit while the other would likely be the sensor's eye, circuit-wire. Watching the fire glow suddenly go out, will indicate when you've successfully turned the heater switch off. By either pulling apart those two wires or shorting them together. NO/NC The Heater would've been beaten.

As someone who does DIY, they could kick through that door, ladder or not. Even a fairly well constructed timber frame building will eventually start to work loose at the joints if you firmly keep kicking it. Eventually the stress going through the structure starts to work nails and screws lose, and the second there is any movement or give, this process accelerates rapidly. Put it this way .... if you stuck 6 high security prisoners in that sauna... how secure would you feel that they wouldnt get out? They would be through that door in less than an hour.

Every Sauna (at least in the USA) requires an "Emergency Quench" override to be installed. This will immediately stop the heater. Most newer saunas also have emergency release hinges on the door. This allows people either inside or outside of the sauna to drop the pins and push or pull the door open (door is capable of opening both inwards and outwards). Saunas are extremely dangerous and should be treated with the utmost care and caution when using. Never go in one alone. Most health spas give you a call button, that you can press and an attendant will come check on you if something goes wrong as well. There are so many safe guards in place with properly installed Saunas that this could never have happened. Wade strikes me as the kind of guy that bought this thing off Wish and had Jose install it.

Low voltage sensors like the heat sensor have 2 wires, sensors like that serve one function. On or Off. Disconnect the sensor from the wires. If nothing happens. Twist the wires together. Open circuit sensor, or closed circuit sensor. That's it. They literally had an off button sitting next to them. Instead of ripping the sensor off the wall, Smash it to bits. That way you won't accidentally break off the wires too far into the wall to work with them.
