The nootropic alpha brain marketed by Onnit and endorsed by Joe Rogan is very popular, but does it actually work? This video analyzes some of the ingredients of alpha brain and the clinical trials. I also take a bottle of alpha brain myself and report the effects.
At 7:07 in the video, I claim that the probability of getting 2 or more tests showing a statistically significant result out of 16 could “easily occur by random chance.” This is correct, and the exact probability is 0.1892 presuming a one-tail target p-value of 0.05 (see this calculator: www.omnicalculator.com/statis...)
At 10:00 in the video, I mention that improving by 1 standard deviation would equate to improving from 50th percentile to 68th percentile. This is incorrect. It would actually equate to improving to the 84th percentile.

No major side effects
Strangely, the analysis notes only the final comparison, not change from baseline
You can’t claim benefit in executive function based on color-word test given decline with alpha brain.

I have been taking hydroxyzine, and I noticed that I was having difficulty with my verbal recall. I would frequently have to pause in my sentences to find the correct words. I quit taking the hydroxyzine and am now taking alpha brain. One of the tests where it found significance was directly on verbal recall (specifically what I’m looking for), and I’ve heard from multiple individuals that was the most notable effect was their ability to recall words and form sentences quicker. It seems you have no difficulty in that area. I’ll let you know the results in 30 days.

My brain has been in a fog for long time due to depression. I took 4 caps the first day and started feeling the fog lift then went to 2 a day like instructed and my energy levels had increased significantly and no more brain fog! I'd like to see a study on if this was a fluke for me or if it actually helps deal with the fogginess caused from depression because it pulled me back into having a life and focus!

So far, after about 2 weeks it seems to be helping very marginally and I have some confounding factors like starting an exercise regime, limiting screen time, and being more deliberate about my sleep schedule. What specific nootropic supplement or supplement blend do you recommend more than others for cognitive enhancement, as shown to have promising results in studies or from personal use? I struggle with focusing and memory recall, which may be exacerbated by Zoloft. My neurologist prescribed Modafinil for narcolepsy and sleep apnea, which has greatly improved my life. However, I am wondering if there is something that could complement Modafinil or work independently to enhance cognitive function, preferably something that is not excessively expensive or worth the cost. I am not seeking medical advice, just your personal opinion.
@DrBrandonBeaber
@DrBrandonBeaber 2 ай бұрын
I personally would avoid purported nootropics, though there is certainly some evidence for racetams + choline sources, huperzine A, and bacopa monnieri. The evidence for exercise, sunlight exposure, healthy diet, adequate sleep, and stress reduction is far more convincing in my opinion.
@meowzic
@meowzic 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the suggestions! It's amazing to talk to a real neurologist, who are always my favorite medical professionals. I don't know if it's because you have a better understanding of the brain and nervous system, but they always seem to understand me on a deeper level, even more so than psychiatrists. I lightly experimented with racetams years ago, supplemented with choline, but didn't stick to a regimen. I am trying phenibut again at a low dose of around 300-500mg, which seemed to have a positive effect last time I tried it, although I am uncertain if it is a good long-term supplement. But for sure exercise, diet, especially sleep and sunshine are most effective for mood enhancement and energy, things that need to become a more habitual lifestyle.

Yes I’m curious as well if over time taking the supplement will lead to better results? I don’t understand how some ingredients are used for Alzheimer’s medication but yet no data has shown improved impact through AB?

Would all these cholinergic supplements, would they interefere with the pathway of something like Clemastine which is an m1 muscarinic inhibitor and similar to being anti-cholinergic. Btw I've taken something called noopept before which is a nootropic peptide, it is commonly taken along with a choline supplement.

Interesting question. I honestly don't know the answer to this. Some MS specialists have criticized the use of clemastine in MS because of the potential for cognitive side effects.

Would love to see an analysis of the main component Alpha GPC. It's so often cited by guys like Huberman, however, I cannot find any cited papers aside from the one focused on Alzheimer's patients with a dose of 1200mg per day. Just very interesting it's difficult to find yet so many youtube experts are touting it.

I've tried Alpha Brain and an Aniracetam/CDP Choline stack. Both were good for being social and overall mood but neither seemed to improve my cognition much other than the slight focus that comes from an uncluttered mind. I only had vivid dreams once or twice unfortunately.

I got my order, took two at six in morning I was speeding through the day talking And on point with every action. Got home, get in a good workout and still had that same energy when I went to bed. I couldn’t even fall sleep and when I finally fell sleep it was almost time for me to wake up. Took the supplement again, it help me get out of my morning briefing but I started to crash until I drink my coffee. I‘ll try to take it again in morning but hope it levels out and balances with my sleep. I do have sleep apnea so that might play roll also or I might have ditch the supplement altogether.

I got my first trial bottle the other day too, took two and didn't expect to feel much of anything, but to me it honestly feels similar to Adderall, just cleaner and no crash. I skipped day 2 because I still felt lingering effects from day 1. it's day 3 now, I took my second dose an hour and a half ago, and I'm definitely feeling it again. idk how this neurologist says he feels zero cognitive difference, this stuff feels pretty strong! I recommend try it every 48 hours instead of every 24 hours to help balance out sleep, that was another reason I didn't take it the second day, I was worried that it would effect my sleep schedule.

So I've been trying it for a week after my previous weeks of smoking weed, drinking & maybe two psilocybn trips lol. After a week of copious amounts of substances. I had a big crash, very depressed & anxious probably due not having a big serotonin, gaba, & dopamine boost I was getting from drugs. So I've been using it in hopes of " naturally" boosting/ getting back to baseline levels, while I take a two week break from those substances. So far I've noticed I haven't woken up really sad, I'm able to go about the day and not become anxious and I'm able to get to sleep better without dwelling in negative thoughts. Could be a placebo or maybe it's helping because of my previous week of mistreating my body for some fun times. Either way while it's not a miracle product or product I recommend if you suffer from health issues. I believe it helps if you are indeed feeling very imbalanced from a hormonal & chemical view point Also liked & subscribed, I enjoy this from a DR's point of view. You already have insight in this area which makes you a lot more credible! Thank you!!

When I first took it, I playing a gig as a musician, and noticed my normal gig fatigue went away, after we had been playing for hours. The second time I took it was last night, and here’s the dream I had: I rediscovered a monastery that was in Lake Anna and I walked up to the building and the door was open to their library and I talked to some people who were there, asking if there was a resident monk there, they said yes, and I eventually passed him in the hall, he seemed familiar. I saw myself carrying around a thin long black staff. I went through different corridors of the monastery and at one point people were lined up to use a bathroom, which the sink in the bathroom made it so you had to squeeze between the door and the sink or duck under the sink to get in, a woman was waiting to use the bathroom and I told her there was a ladies room down the hall. The assembly room was filling with people, waiting to hear the monks discourse, I continue through the halls and run into a nice girl, who was hungry and wanted to know if the monastery had any food to eat, I offered to take her to eat across the street. There was a sadness in her, like someone she knew passed away. We went and got some food. Looked like fireworks were going off in the distance.

Would someone who was at a 98 percentile with marked cognitive degradation see a marked change or just a return to normal abilities? @DrBrandonBeaber I saw that there was a slight improvement but I was specifically thinking on how that would affect someone who was at a higher percentile from the start in regaining lost higher cognitive functions. I'm starting to look at other supplements and the one to really catch my eyes is phenylpiracetam with an added choline supplement like alpha gpc. Any thoughts?

To my understanding these tests tested cognitive function on alpha brain, they advertise it increases your brains ability to enter into the flow state as well. Would these tests show that claim is also bs?

I took alpha brain a few days ago and pretty severe side effects from it and have since tried to understand what in this product caused them. 2h after ingestion I had a sudden onsent of severe anxiety and nausea which lead to vomiting within 30 minutes of onset of these unpleasant symptoms. I felt out of it and off balance and uncoordinated when walking. I had a really terrible experience but am so curious to understand what exactly happened to my body. do you have a scientific answer to this reaction to some of the ingredients? I've read multiple other reviews after this event that were similar to my experience.
