that's an excellent advice I read in the forums that using the weight plates is a big NO NO, and it discouraged me from using them. now that I've seen your video, I will definitely use these cast iron weight plates and machine them for various purposes including the back plate for my 4 jaw independent 125 mm chuck, also from Sanou (it has 4 mounting bolts)

Was there are stated reason as to why they were bad? I can see that some mfgs might do better quality casting than others, but if there are minimal voids or inclusions, why not?

I have the exact 3-jaw that came with my HBM 250x550 lathe. I took the chuck apart and cleaned it and put in a generous amount of grease - now it’s really nice to tighten with minimal friction and noise :-) Thanks for posting Steve! You’re a great inspiration and I always enjoy your videos :-)

Ingenious idea one transferring the holes from the chuck to the back plate. One addition it made me think of, would be to use an old allen key to make "points". Grind a point on the end of the key, and then cut off the pointed bit to a length that would have the point 10 or so thou proud of the hex in the stainless stud. Screw the studs in flush, drop in the "points", and transfer the holes. Basically, the poor man's version of transfer screws. When you're done, retrieve the points with a magnet, take out the studs, and you're Bob's nephew. Allen keys are reasonably hard, so they should last a while (as long as you're not wailing on them), and you'd end up with actual center marks, rather than the circles. Plus, one allen key would provide a fair number of points, and you wouldn't have to worry about replacing the studs.

Isn't cast iron brittle? I am about to have a backplate machined in order to mount a lathe chuck (6 jaw by Sanou) onto a core drilling machine. The problem is that sometimes the core drill gets jammed in the masonry. What material would you recommend for that application? - I was thinking of steel and maybe even hardening it after machining, but hardening will also make it more brittle, won't it?

I am worried about messing the gears up to lock the spindle so I can put some hefty torque on it to try and even get it to budge!! so needless to say I kinda gave up on it until I can think of a way to hold the spindle TIGHT!-------- As always TWO THUMBS UP on the videos my Friend!!!!

I bought the same in 160mm in steel but had to make a camlock D1-4 backplate its a very good chuck for little money if I would have bought a steel backplate every plate would have been more expensive than the steel chuck :-) K11-160A (90eu with reverse jaws ) most other chucks companies are far to expensive for hobby so it's good having SanOu on the market as long as they keep their standards I buy only them in the future...

I bought a Sanou 6" chuck, & found that it had a bit of grit in the works. After disassembly, cleaning, & especially DEBURRING; it now works as smooth as a Swiss watch ! *I've purchased a LOT of Chinesium over the years, & find that far more often than not, taking the edge off sharp parts 'seems' to be a method of cost cutting !? So often parts 'look' good from appearance, but are rather poorly crafted overall - mere attention to detail makes a major difference between 'good enough', & 'most EXCELLENT !' ;) I would trust home made transfer screws vs the rough nature of factory made set screws, as you can control the concentricity ! Another method to transfer centers for the bolts, would be to use 'ground centers' on hardened grub screws; putting the screws in BACKWARDS. . . with the ground 'points' facing up. . . then, instead of hitting the back to 'seat' the points. . .'PRESS, or CLAMP the whole assembly. . . that would ensure near perfection ! ( of course, perfection depends on the class of fit of the grub screw / setscrew thread tolerance) * I've been a long time sub, but have rarely commented - 'Love your content , thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for another great video Steve. I really appreciate your time spent helping others. Looking through your videos I can't seem to find one that shows how to figure out how to put the holes around the edge of the backing plate to make it into an indexing plate. I don't mean how you use your drilling jig to drill the actual holes, I mean how do you index the lathe spindle before drilling the holes? If someone doesn't already have a drilled backplate from Myford how would you go about creating the indexing system? What would you use for indexing...a 24 tooth gear perhaps? Thanks for any help you may provide. Tom
@1dgrdgr
@1dgrdgr 6 жыл бұрын
goldpro goldpro Myford sold him the first one if I recall correctly. You can get a circular saw blade with 24 teeth. Build a jig that centers it on the back of the spindle and a one way indexing bar (like a playing card in a bike's wheel if you remember that) and drill your first backing plate. Maybe get a 100 tooth blade while your at it for another row. That will give you 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 divisions. Might come in handy for machine dials
@goldprogoldpro7809
@goldprogoldpro7809 6 жыл бұрын
1dgrdgr thanks for that. I just realized I have a dividing plate so I could hold that in the chuck somehow and make a pin locating attachment to clamp on somewhere. that should work.

@BeachsideHank 6 жыл бұрын
Noway Jerk I have seen a suggestion that the dumbbell's hardness may only be surface chill due to the normal casting process, and an angle grinder was used to fairly level all surfaces and edges of the casting before machining, which is what I think I'll do to the collection I have on hand. I tend to find these roadside during my "Asset Recovery Sweeps" in my neighborhood, the only competition I have is metal salvagers who sell them off for scrap value to the yards.
@eliduttman315
@eliduttman315 6 жыл бұрын
That "chill" is white iron whose "excess" carbon is in the form of ferric carbide. Ferric carbide is VERY hard. You can break through the "chill" with a CBN insert tool and finish the job off with whatever tickles your fancy, including HSS.
@nowayjerk8064
@nowayjerk8064 6 жыл бұрын
i collect them up at auction as scrap so if scraps where they end thats one less bit i have to find a place in the empire of junk good pile. that said i ground a nice deep spot and the hard was past 1/4 " deep .carbide would drill then but i was hanging on the press handle big time and then the cut was scraping and kilt the bit with chatter. i eventually got mad and hit it with my favorite tool and it was very brittle like big crystals on the break.

I've been thinking a long time of how to make a back plate for my new four jaw chuck. I thought of casting it in aluminium and then turning it, cast iron is too hot for me but it didn't feel 100 % right with Al. After much thinking, I looked in the boxes that came with my old lathe and what the heck, there was an extra back plate. Now I just have to turn a register on it and make some screw holes.

@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve Thanks. I don't bother doing that. If anything runs out a bit I just knock the work piece with the spindle going. All hard jaw chucks run out a bit here and there and will vary from chuck to chuck anyway so I could show mine at .001 but another may be 003. Some people get obsessed by concentricity when none of it really matters. If you want critical concentricity on lathes you are really meant to have soft jaws and bore them to suit the diameter of the component. Regards Steve

@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 5 жыл бұрын
The Jaws should be numbered 1-3 plus and their respective positions on the chuck are also numbered, so they go back in the exact slot they came from. You have to load number 1 first so the scroll just picks up that one and load 2 and 3 in sequence, as you wind the chuck key. On one revolution of the scroll it should pick up all three jaws and they should be correct.
