josh otstot before my first Ironman, I peaked at 40 hours of training a week. I’m sure I could’ve gotten away with less, but I was nervous about not training enough! Lol! I think I did about 3 weeks of that before I started tapering. I think I started tapering about 2.5 weeks out. Turns out, I had way more than enough fitness for the race, and probably could’ve gone significantly faster. I kept my effort way under maximal threshold. I had so much energy at the end, that I negative split the last 7 miles, and I could’ve easily run 10 more. I suppose that’s called learning. I ended with a time of 11:17:03. While I didn’t think that was a bad time, I’m sure I could’ve gone at least 15-30 minutes faster. Keep in mind that I was 34 at the time, and had done a 5:10 70.3 early that season. This was with zero coaching, and just whatever training I thought was decent at the time. Not sure why I felt the need to share, but I think a lot of age-groupers might over train. I think a lot of that has to do with nerves, like Lionel admits to having.

I don't think that it alone is your fitness - your running form as gotten so much better and has much to do with your improvement. Like you said - it's not a biker's race, it comes down to the running. With your improved form things are going to look good.

I'm worried about a catch-up thought process/mentality, which could lead to over training. Augusta shouldn't be about winning but getting prepped for Kona. If you follow Patrick Lange he does enough to qualify for Kona and sometimes wins and sometimes doesn't before Kona and it doesn't appear to phase him, because he knows the big one to peak for is Kona. Then again every athlete can work differently. But I still worry as I want to see Lionel at his best in October!
@Mike.A.
@Mike.A. 4 жыл бұрын
Agree and believe less is more when it comes to Kona prep and for that reason don't really like the idea of doing a 70.3 race 2 weeks out, unless it's done at closer to training pace.

Some infesting comments on here, Lionel is some character that makes the sport great😊, but after watching Ali brownlee at weekend not having his top run legs after racing only two weeks previous 😱, would agree only a few weeks before kona, risk of accident and the race mode pushing hard, would training all the way to kona be bettter after what happened last year, it would be so great if Lionel is on the podium in a months time 😊

Craig Alexander, Dave Scott, Mark Allen, Natasha Badmann, Peter Reid, Daniella Ryf, they all did a 70.3 two weeks out........ NO WAIT! They did NOT. Lack of a coach has cost Lionel about two years of what is a short career for any pro triathlete. One K repeats at a three minute pace shortly before Kona. Yup. Exactly what no coach would ever prescribe.

Just don't get why he trains so much indoors when races are outdoors. I continue to believe Lionel has an addictive personality who is totally addicted to training. At saying that I wish him well but I simply cannot see him being in the top 20 in kona, not given his lack of prep all be it injury enforced. To be on the start line in kona for Lionel will itself be an incredible achievement.

The idea that 2nd is the 1st loser is a destructive mindset, IMHO. If you've given your BEST across the disciplines that is all you can do, whether you are 1st or last. That is all you can ask of yourself! That "2nd is the 1st loser" expression sounds like something that a Dad, who's insecure in themselves, would say to their son/daughter, to give the illusion of macho bullshit. Trust in the process and do the best you can on the day. After the season is over is when you can decide whether the process needs tweaking/improving for next season.
