A few things I'd like to touch on.. I've been in this situations before. And I've never been sucker punched. For a few reasons. 1 - The range. Nick mentions stepping back if the guy starts angling off or acting suspicious.. I agree. a small step back takes you out of sucker punch range. if the guy steps in towards you then you know he's looking for a confrontation. at which points you need to get your hands ready. 2 - Nick mentions the guy looking around.. maybe looking to see who is watching.. Thats not true. usually what happens is they are looking around because they are trying to distract. They don't want to look at the person they are about to sucker punch because they are trying to not give away a tell. They want it to be a surprise.. so they look everywhere BUT the person. What i see happen in street fights more often is the victim might look around to see if anyone can help intervene or deescalate the situation.. Usually they are scared, or nervous and then don't pay enough attention to what the sucker puncher is about to do. Remember.. if you're in a situation that is escalating and you think the person might throw a punch.. you need to stay focused on them. Dont look at their eyes.. look at their body. have the clinched their fists? take a small step back so you're out of range. and make sure you know your surrounding.. are you on grass, pavement, is it inside.... that way if you really dont want to fight then you can escape or put something like a tree, or table between you and the other guy.

what about doing the sucker punch. What is an effective way to sucker punch a bigger or taller person who may have friends and thus you need to end him quick before he ends you?
@mac3770
@mac3770 5 жыл бұрын
Charles Wofford Well considering how many good citizens exist now particularly if youre small and they dont think youre in a gang or have weapons and even if they did not see the beginning of a situation or fight, its good to look around to see if any wannabe toughguy good ctiziens are around you may have to deal with later to get away.

@@mac3770 me personally I would either do a palm strike straight to their groin solar plexus or directly to the nose and chin and if you can get away or do the strike to the nose Russian and try to sweep them to get away it's several different techniques that you can use the Palm strike is way more effective than the punch so in that situation always use the pump strike and go for the weaker areas the knows the solar plexus and the groin does not always work I've been kicked and hit in the groin several times in a fight and it did not phase me

As a bouncer I like to put my hands on my chest and talk with my hands slightly this way my hands are up and ready but don't give away the fact that I'm ready to defend and put my covers up, I like stepping into the attack with my covers up because I can stop the attack and usually land an elbow as I'm moving in and it gives me more time to react to the attack without getting punched in the face, I've been doing security for 18 years now I work at a rough bar and I've stayed safe with this approach since taking it into consideration, stay safe out there guys!
@Sk0lzky
@Sk0lzky 3 жыл бұрын
We call it a "bouncer stance" where I live, it's very popular in this line of work for a reason. There's also a variation I see security guards do a lot where you rest your hands on the chest pouches of the bulletproof vest (where people usually carry the radio) and/or tuck your thumbs under the vest. Does the same and lets you answer radio checks without having to move your hands... Or reach for the snacks lol

Id also like to add, the part @ 3:37 is so often neglected even by seasoned veterans so I'm so glad you mentioned it. It is HARDER to knock someone out if they are suspecting trouble AND are trained AND MOST IMPORTANTLY they are MOVING. This is due to the way the physics in kinetic linking combined with each individual's level of kinesthetic perception. Kinetic linking is the ability to gain maximum inertia of an object to have it apply the most efficient maximum force it is capable of. This force is then applied to a target or target area. Naturally if the target is MOVING, even if it's just a little bit and as long as it's not constantly towards the incoming inertia then it is going to not be able to achieve maximum power. This would be good news because that right there can be the difference in getting maybe grazed or hit off target at medium power leaving you still conscious and able to react or counter if you were to be a bit late on the defenses or ko'd or worse. Kinesthetic perception is your ability to judge and know where a part of your body is without having to actually LOOK at it or touch it to get a bearing on it's location ( old schoolers might call this 'body feel mechanics' ). For example right now without looking at or touching it close your eyes , straighten your arm out to the side, and touch your pinky to your thumb. Do you know EXACTLY where your hand is? If someone grabbed it, how long would you have to think before reacting? The better you are at knowing this the more aware you can be physically. Combined with MENTAL awareness and alertness and its awesome. SORRY NICK FOR THE TWO NOVELS I TYPED! I HAVNT BEEN ON IN A WHILE OR SEEN THE CHANNEL MAN! I WAS HAVING WITHDRAWALS!

🥋 Notice that the sucker puncher scratched his face right before throwing the suckerpunch to have an upper hand over his victim. Tip: As soon as you see a guy scratching his face/neck/head/ankle/etc. at any range within your centerline, scratch your face/neck/head/ankle/etc. with him that way you’ll have a greater chance to catch the suckerpunch, suckerkick, etc. and counterattack. If he switches hands to scratch, switch your hands and scratch with him with your other hand then move/lunge/slide/sidestep out of fighting range or within fighting range and/or away from his centerline the split second he stop scratching himself.

Also when standing front to front your body is a wider target" anticipate to make a quick turn to the side stance as he throws the blow , & counterpunch while his dominant arm is extended, as most people are right handed and throw a right hook or right cross, up close a possible upper cut, your videos are very informative and educational especially improving one's technique and anticipating strikes, as my instructor used to say knowledge is power " read body movement , another most excellent video thank you for taking the time to make these videos as I absorb your knowledge like a sponge" and download it in the back of my brain, so is if the scenario were to arise I would be mentally prepared and confident "

First of all...HEY NICK! HAPPY NEW YEAR! I'd like to touch up on some of the comments people are making. As usual Nick, class triple A work on the video and lesson. Ironically enough, when I was a CO for 3 years back in the late 90's we had to train these scenarios. Id like to defend the actions of the third officer on the left of the video who has been getting flak from the viewers. Obviously you havn't been a CO before. He wasn't scared, or unwilling to engage the melee. As a CO your number one priority is your and your fellow staff's lives.If you see an incident go down you are trained to contact the main control room, followed by the supervisor who is usually a Sgt. rank or higher. Most of the time control does this for you or they hear your call on the walkie. After the call in, you then help your fellow officer. You can see if you pause @ 1:21 then change it to 0.25 speed you will see the officer reaches for his gear, and to the layman, seems to be hesitant to do something. Well he also put down his documents in a temp hiding spot. In that job, documents are legal binding and you protect them like they are your social security card / ID because you are liable for them. Especially if they are incident reports. So you see he goes behind the glass wall to hide his paperwork and by the time he rounds the corner ( and even then he still engages , albeit slowly ) to assist but notices the calvary already handling it.

I’ve been in Corrections for a few years now, and this video is the truth, and echoed by greats like Bas Rutten. I’ve been in this type of situation a few times, and preparedness is worth its weight in gold. Working with inmates, you have an idea of your population and how they are from day to day, but you never really know what they could be thinking in a given moment, could be a bad day, they got into an arguement, they want to settle up with you for something they’re made at you about, something you took they werent supposed to have, whatever; it pays to aware, and for myself I try to make it look casual. I keep my left hand free and up near my face, usally my chin, and my right hand under my left elbow, untucked, so in a conversation it just looks like I’m resting my chin in my hand, or such, thats the first step in a sublte chess game that I’m playing with them from night to night. General rule is I dont let anyone get too close to me, either, I’m always just arm distance or so, and if I can smell ill intent, I counter move. It’s how I’ve come out on top in my scaps with these guys. Be nice, be professional, even cordial, but never a fool.

Good demonstration and approach. I prefer to put my left hand onto my chin and the right arm across the chest with the right hand underneath the left elbow. As the punch comes in raise your left elbow in front of your face and hand across the ear. At the same time raise your right elbow so that it is level with the eye, forearm facing downwards. The whole knockout area of the jaw is now protected. Also if you step into the punch, with your left leg forward,you close the distance. The left hand can then grab his shoulder before you deliver right arm elbow strikes to the face or throat. Best to practice with a partner until it's hopefully second nature.

Great video nick, but have you heard about Tony Blauer? He created an entire system of self-defense based on countering ambushes including sucker punches knife attacks etc. He called it the S.P.E.A.R. system and he's already taught it to a number of law enforcement agencies around the world. You seem to have similar ideas with him i'd like to see what you think of it.

Love what you do, keep it up. One thing I will say however, your intro audio is much louder than your baseline audio, so many times I turn down the volume at the intro because it is loud, then have to turn it back up for the video. Hope that helps.

I've made habits of scratching my head or my hands sitting under my chin with a arm folded like I'm pondering. A guy showed me this when I was younger on how to hold your hands up in a bad argument in case something like this happens. It's made a difference for me once probably would have got knocked out if I wasn't ready with my hands I still got hit but could of been worse. He called it verbal judo not looking aggressive but ready to defend yourself.

Your right Nick. U need your hands up. I've knocked so many guys out because their were down during our argument hands down. Seen a few guards knocked to sleep in prison also because of this same thing. Great info and your right on the money good job👊🏾
