It's not an ordinary play, we are talking about Tchaikovsky's piano concerto n. 1! For me, it was very well performed, and the piano player gave her soul through the piano keys.

Nikolayeva is still far too little known. She is one of these fabulous Soviet era pianists who were hardly known in the west - along with Sofronitsky, Yudina, Grinberg, and many others - but who would undoubtedly have been global superstars had they been allowed to travel abroad. In the west one knew only Richter and Gileles, but they were just the tip of the iceberg. And when the iron curtain finally opened, Nikolayeva tragically did not live much longer. Nikolayeva is for me as one of the greatest Bach pianists of all time, and of course the Shostakovich 24 Preludes and Fugues are basically synonymous with her (as the Grandados Goyescas are synonymous with Alicia de Laroccha). But she could play everything supremely well, as this recording shows.

I absolutely agree. Nikolayeva is one of the most intelligent and interesting musicians on record. unfortunately, now she is almost forgotten, while superficial and mediocre "pianists" are well known...

Well, I think LangLang could learn something from her - it is not always speed which makes a brilliant pianist - it is the heart and soul (besides the technique) - and she combines both. Wonderful interpretation, I love it!!

I agree with you concerning speed, especially in this concerto. But to be fair, Lang Lang in his official DG recording with Baremboim and the Chicago SO is not so fast with a duration of 38:38.

Some discussion here about tempo. In my experience it’s much more difficult to play restrained than wildly. The audience hears every note so complete command of the notes is essential. As we hear in this performance a restrained tempo allows for musicality to flourish, phrasing, shading, CONTROL. And this lady has it in spades. I had not heard of her before finding her here on KZfaq. A long time personal friend of Shostakovich playing Tchaikovsky. It doesn’t get more Russian than this folks.

I do prefer this concerto played broad and lyrical like here, rather than fast and furious "à la Horowitz". I just regret that Nikolayeva's octaves at 10:00 to 10:15 are so ponderous (listen to comparatively broad performances like Richter/Karajan or Argerich/Dutoit, both on DG, for a more powerful climax) .
