Great video! My first camera was a Nikon F601 that I purchased in 1995. By 1998 I was working at a photographic shop and convinced the owner to allow me to pay weekly instalments for a Nikon F5 that became my second ever camera. Paired to 3 prime lenses(24 F2.8, 50 F1.4 and 85 F1.8) that F5 saw me flourish as a young photographer. I exchanged the F601 for an FM2n a couple years after that and I still have both, the FM2n and the F5!!...Today I'm a mirrorless shooter and I could not have anything less that the incredible Z9. This time though, I've got the 20mm, the 24mm, the 35mm, the 50mm and the 85mm, all prime, all F1.8 and Z mount. Plus the Z 105 F2.8 Macro. What a blessing! Thank you for your video!

One major plus regarding the F100 which was not mentioned is the focus assist. This means any manual focus lenses which are AI, AI-S or even older AI converted can be used with metering and focus assist, which is a very desirable feature for anyone who has older MF glass.

I agree, that little green dot gives me so much confidence that I nailed focus. Haven’t been let down yet. The F4 and F5 have the same feature. Bonus, the price is still in the affordable range. Crazy people pay almost the same for a Pentax k1000. Now that’s a great camera but it shouldn’t cost almost as much as one of the best Nikon cameras. No one could argue the film resurgence is here.

Most auto focus Nikon film cameras have focus assist with manual focus lenses but a lot of them have metering limitations meaning either they will not meter at all or only allow centre-weighted or spot metering (and no matrix metering). For example the F90X (or N90S) has no matrix meting with AI and AI-S lenses but does have centre-weighted and spot while the F80 does not meter at all with manual focus lenses.
@thewildgoose7467

@@PhotoTubeUK I think most photographers can manage to survive without matrix metering? In fact the best in camera metering system I've used in over 40 years of photography is on the Nikon F3, which uses a hybrid of centre weighted and spot with an 80/20 ratio. I have never had an incorrectly exposed transparency using that camera. I've used many cameras down the years, quite a few of which had "matrix metering", but I've never used it simply because I've never had the desire to or need to? Too many options is not necessarily a good thing, in fact it can obstruct creativity rather than assisting it.

I found this really useful having just bought a f90x and 50mm 1.4 d lens without looking into it prior to purchasing. My intention is to use both this and a d700 (maybe) in tandem depending on my mood . Really useful to know about not being able to use AFS lenses to change the aperture, so I won’t buy any. Thanks for your multiple camera reviews in this video. I just purchased a near mint Nikon F5 from a reliable camera retailer/reseller based in Japan and I am having it shipped to me in the U.S.A. with a MF-28 Data Back. I am eagerly awaiting its arrival in about 3 weeks and will compare it to my Nikon D810 which I also recently purchased online new from Abes of Maine. I used to shoot Canon only, but am now committed to Nikon with vintage D lenses. Again, thanks for your video review of these vintage film cameras.

Yeah it’s been 2 years, what do you think of the F5? Personally of the AF Nikons I don’t think it gets any better. For those who use it today there’s extreme over kill feature wise but the design and over engineering is still above and beyond pretty much every other camera including newer models. It’s a big beast but I love mine and I have an FE, F100, F4 and have had and F2 and F3. I’d say the F5 is the best Nikon ever made. I hope you like yours!

The meter on the fe2 actually comes on when the shutter button is half depressed. It stays in operation for another 16 seconds before it automatically turns off. That’s a change from the fe, which operates as you described the fe2

I have and still use all my Nikon film cameras. The entire range of professional cameras from F to F6 as well as the F100 and FM2n. None have ever needed any repair or cleaning and are quite capable when paired to appropriate lenses of the specific era they were in use. Now, I use a Z6 and Z7 paired with the original pre Ai lenses which mount and work very well. For someone who is wanting to venture into film photography, this review should be very helpful in deciding which one to get. The availability of lenses for these cameras is still quite good on eBay.

Excellent overview. I lost my F100 in an overseas move and was looking for a reasonable alternative replacement given the inflated prices of those cameras at the moment. I believe I've finally found it with the F90X, which I found in very good nick for under US$30. It's a beast of a camera - feels great in the hands, has tons of functions and features without anything being too cute, and manual focusing with older lenses is very accurate even with my older eyes ; )

Wow! Thanks! Excellent video and review on those wonderful Nikon's!!!! Also would like to include the excellent Nikon N8008. I own one and it is very similar to the Nikon N90S but its include a Multi Exposure feature. Its as solid and durable as the N90S and what I love from both is that you really do not need a Mirror lock up feature; because the body is so solid and the mirror has an excellent shock absorbing mechanism. I notice a big difference in my shots from my Nikon F2 and N90S with a 200mm tele. It doesn't matter if you use a tripod or not; the F2 shots always came out blur on speeds lower than 1/250 when not using the mirror lock up. While on my N90S the image are sharp because the mirror use a newer technology in absorbing the mirror flap shock. Also will like to add on the FE2 that the self timer work just like a mirror lock up feature. Have to said again that this video is excellent!!!

A very useful video. Thank you! Thumbs up and subscribed. :) I am a very happy long-time user of F100. It was my 4th SLR before I switched to DSLRs. The “user experience” is comparable to a modern Nikon DSLRs (I have D750, D7200 and D90). Practically, F100 is like a modern full-frame DSLR without the video capabilities and without the LiveView screen. And I have to wait a bit longer to see my photos. :D. I once had a D700 - it was nearly a "digital twin" of my F100. Nikon fixed the issue with the breaking rewinding fork after a year or two; the newer one looks different, so it's worth checking the serial number before buying a used F100. Nikon was also replacing the old faulty forks for free, so the fork in the F100 you are going to buy might have already been replaced. Potential buyers should find some online photos of the 2 fork designs. Another flaw is that - supposedly - the plastic back door can easily break. It has never happened to me. As regards (no) mirror lock-up feature, I see no adverse effects on sharpness at standard times (I was comparing the sharpness of similar photos taken on a tripod: (1) in ambient light, (2) in total darkness with a flash. If I were shooting film only, I might probably consider buying F5 as a second body (which is worse than F100 in my opinion: it is very heavy/bulky, the focus points don`t light up, there is no matrix mode and - which is nearly a deal-breaker for me - it doesn't support metering with manual lenses). Or I could upgrade from F100 to F6 (which is definitely better than D5 or F100, but it`s quite dear). As I shoot digital 99% of the time, F100 is more than enough for me.
@PhotoTubeUK
@PhotoTubeUK 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. The F5 does have matrix metering although it is not available with manual focus lenses (the other metering modes ARE available with manual lenses though). The same applies to the F100. The matrix metering in the F5 is the 1005 element colour (RGB) type whereas the F100 has the arguably inferior "10 element 3D" type matrix metering. For me the F5 is worth the extra cost over the F100 mainly for it's mirror lock-up and better long term durability and it does not cost that much more really. I think the F6 is probably Nikon's best ever film SLR but it's hard for many people to justify that expense when the F5 and F100 are so much cheaper.

I have just watched this video for a second time and after watching your review on the F100 was surprised to see that you did not mention anything about the film door latches being problematic in breaking off. Nikon did like you say take the cheap way with the film rewind sprocket, and I think that Nikon did the same with the film door latches being plastic. I made some inquiries with a Nikon camera repair and they no longer can repair or replace the film door. So in short if one buys a F100 and if the film rewind sprocket or the film door latch breaks, one has a brick instead of a camera. I was originally looking at getting myself a F100 but after watching a few videos I changed my mind. With the F100 prices on eBay at present December 2020 they are just expensive as a good F4 or F5, so my choice will be either a mint F4S or a F5 from Japan. I am waiting until after the New Year before I get one of these cameras. Just over a week ago I purchased a brand new Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G lens as my main prime lens, and with a $100 gift card that came with the new lens I got a Hoya UV Filter only having to pay a $35 difference. I have used it on my D300 and have found it to be a quick lens to focus, so I am happy with it. Bring on 2021.
@PhotoTubeUK
@PhotoTubeUK 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Gary. I was not aware of the problem of the film door latches breaking off. Another example of annoying Nikon cost cutting! I sold my F100 some time ago. I think it's crazy that a F100 costs almost as much as a F5 on the used market! I would always go for a F5 over a F100. The only downside is the increased weight. I think the Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G is one of Nikon's best ever lenses and I would highly recommend it. It's not ideal for the N90S (or F90X) as it has no aperture ring so you would be restricted to shutter priority or program mode on that camera. The AF 85mm f1.8 D or the excellent Tokina ATX Pro 100mm f2.8 macro are excellent alternatives if you need the aperture ring. These days I use my F90X for the majority of my 35mm film photography.

It is a very simple procedure to remove the broken plastic hooks on the film back, and make your own out of either some sheet metal or plastic and attach them to the film back. Don't be sucked into the false info going around that say you are stuck with a "brick" if they break on you. A little bit of common sense and some diy working and anybody can do the replacement.

Wonderful video. Thanks for making it! :) I’ve googled and can find the answer. I thought the newest lenses were g-type, and the type-e are very old. Which lenses are you referring to? Again, great video, very informative, thanks for making this video.
@PhotoTubeUK
@PhotoTubeUK 4 жыл бұрын
G-type lenses do not have an aperture ring so in manual mode or in aperture priority mode, you have to set the aperture on the camera body. You cannot do this on the older film cameras such as the F90 or FE2. E-Type are the newest lenses. They also have no aperture ring and have electronically controlled apertures and will only shoot at widest aperture on older cameras. The AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED is an example of E-type lens, as is the AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E. The AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G is an example of a G-type lens. Older AF and AF-D lenses (such as the AF 50mm f/1.4D) have aperture rings as do the old Ai and AIS manual focus lenses. I hope this helps.

Just bought the F90x after this video, and I'm loving it, feels EXTREMELY solid, more than any DSLR I've held in my hands, and even feels stronger than older FM, Fm2 type Nikon Cameras I've shot with. The autofocus is also EXTREMELY fast, of course not as fast as modern cameras but, I never expected to see such a fast autofocus from the early 90s(but never used the Canon cameras from that period, wich ar famous for fast AF). Ansious to see the results after I finish and develop the first roll. My suggestion in case you do not own AF-D lenses is to get one with the camera. I had 2 ai/ai-s lenses prior to buying the F90x and I was lucky to find an F90x + a 35-70 AF-D lens. Even a cheaper AF-D lens such the 35-70 will work GREAT with this camera, so I really suggest you get one. One AMAZING thing about the F90x is that probably because it was made in a time when I guess most photographers still had a lot of AI/AI-S lenses, Nikon included this very effective manual focus aid in the viewfinder, basically a little ball shows up whenever the center of the frame is in focus(the AF sensor is stil operating during manual focus, and it is giving you feedback on the center). What this means is that shooting with older manual lenses is really easy. Its basically like having a modern focus peaking type system. Amazing camera!

Hello Felipe, I am pleased to hear you are happy with your F90X. Autofocus speed is very dependent on the lens - some are very slow (e.g the old AF-D 100-400mm) while some can be as fast as modern lenses (e.g. the Nikon AF 70-210 f4-5.6 D, i.e. the "D" version - the earlier version without the "D" is slower!). I use my AIS 28mm f/2.8 lens a lot with the F90X and find the manual focusing easy too. Enjoy!

@@PhotoTubeUK exactly. The Fm is great, and with some experience manual focus on it works fine, but unless the user has great amounts of experience with the FM(the kind of experience that probably only people who worked with it professionaly on a daily basis back in the 70s has) nothing beats the auto focus and great metering of the F90x(or probably any Nikon from this period). Developing a roll of film to se 36 frames with nice focus, sharpness and great exposure is something I have never done before haha!

My Nikon faves - F90x, F80, F100, FM(2), F60 (yes!). I own all of them, minus the FM2. Issues with the F90(s, x) and F80, F100 so far: 1) sticky film back door. F100 into general: film rewind fork could break due to material fatique (early series), also the plastic film door latches could break (all F100 affected). Same goes for the F80/N80, but it's less common known than onto the F100. The film rewind fork is being made out of plastic, onto the F60 (F65, F75) and F80, F100. Onto the F90(s, x) the film rewind fork is being made out of metal, and also the film door does have metal latches - into contrast. As a rule of thumb - close the film door on these SLRs carefully. Do not hold the camera with the film door down, and just *pop* it open, this causes extra stress to the plastic latches. (!). Also, always exchange your lenses on the go (if you must) point the lens mount down, to avoid dust inclusion, never touch the delicate mirror mechanism. Happy shooting!

Never had that problem with a F90/N90/F90X/N90S although I have with a N80/F80. With any old camera you run the risk of it failing. In my experience the N90/F90 series is pretty reliable.

You can do manual reset to the camera and that will get rid of the ERR sign.

You forgot the Nikon FG, and the Nikon EL, and ELW in which I have these models along with the 3 Nikon Ftn, Nikon F2, Nikon FM, and the F100 with Grip. Along with the Nikon Point n Shoot's AF the Nikon Lite Touch, Nikon Action Touch, and the Nikon TeleTouch 800. Along with my Manual Focus Nikkors, and my AF Nikkors. YEA!! And Now on Digital, I have the Nikon D2Xs, and D700, and along with the Fuji models, S2Pro(My First DSLR), and then the S3Pro, and the S5Pro.. As I have try the Matrix metering using the 50mm F/2.0 manual focus Nikkor which it was AI Converted as it is my favor lens. Also I think that after seeing a list on You Tube base of the subject of the F100 that the camera yes it does have a metal chassis, and also a that the plastic part that you mention is made of Polyfiber carbon material, and that does not break since they make Formula One Racing cars out of that material, and the FE - You forgot to mention that the FE & FE2 of the Memory Exposure Lock, in which the Nikon EL, and the FG & FG20 Has this mode as you focus your subject in a Back Lite scene as you come to your subject, and LOCK your exposure, and then re-focus while holding the switch on the lock mode, and then take your shot as this will allow you to expose your back lite subject properly expose for back lite subjects for this. The switch is located on the self timer as you move it to the left side. That the FG & FG20 has a button but it will work on Auto, and Program Mode. And FYI that the N80. and other N65, N75, and N55 HAS Plastic Film Door Locks, so be careful.. or you have to fine a Use Dead Nikon, and get it for the Part of the door lock, and you cannot get it replace with a metal lock - Well you get a B+ as you might of bump it up better if you stop looking at the screen. See that in what working at a camera store for 33 years can do learn as you talk to the camera reps, and customers than reading off the screen.....

You're nuts..... the f5 is the best out of this line up!! They are all very solid cameras and will last for decades with no issues at all.
