Is every verse of every gospel really historically true? Do the different gospel accounts contradict each other, or do they harmonize with one another? Why are there differences? The differences we can read weren’t put there… deliberately,… were they?

Most of my research for this came from four main sources. They are:
Ehrman, Bart. (2005) Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why. (Harper One)
Ehrman, Bart. (2005) Lost Christianities: The Battles for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew (Oxford University Press)
Martin, Dale. (2012) New Testament History and Literature. (Yale University Press)
Tabor, James. (2012) Paul and Jesus: How the Apostle Transformed Christianity (Simon and Schuster)
It’s been several years in the writing, but with months and months going past between edits. I gave it a push last summer and again over Christmas. I discovered that I could go on forever adding and polishing, but I bit the bullet and ran with what you see here. I wish I was smart enough to insert, coherently, more of the incredible scholarly information that inspired this idea.
The characters here are a conglomerate representative of the authors of mainly Mark and Luke, but also to some extent Matthew. In the early stages of writing I was veering much more towards including more Matthew’s additions and edits, but only a few are still in there. I didn’t really look at John’s gospel for this.
This is a video made for KZfaq in my non-abundant free time, not a doctoral dissertation. It is a work of informed satire, based on extensive reading, but nit-pickers will find nits throughout it to pick, so I want to address one of them from the outset. I am confident that the actual salient points and questions that the video raises are rock solid. One must distinguish between what is included for the sake of fashioning a coherent plot/script, including hyperbole, and the scholarly historical information the satire is founded upon. If you dispute the scholarship, take it up with the scholars, and if you can convince them, please do then bring it to me.
For example - to pre-empt the what I predict is the most obvious surface-level objection: I know who the author of Luke is purported to be, generally, and the purpose for his writing his gospel given at its beginning (and in the beginning of Acts). I’m not attempting to assert a fact claim along the lines of that the author of Luke was simply a random rogue copyist of Mark. That’s just a plot device, like satirists often use. I don’t for a second think that the gospel of Luke arose out of a copyist’s desire to simply alter bits and pieces of the text of Mark. What I’m attempting to portray, satirically, is the dissonance between what historians can tell us about the way the gospels were authored, copied, miscopied, and deliberately changed by individuals that we of course can’t know or identify, and the view held by many modern Christians: that each and every verse of each and every gospel is actual historical truth. Far from it: we can identify the agenda and motivations behind obviously deliberate changes that have for thousands of years been passed off as unquestionably true.

You may be too far gone but don't drag everyone else with you, accusing us of being sinners to unsettle us. People who come to this vid are driven by doubt, they search for knowledge because they don't want to say they believe the Bible without good reason. When so many things in it unarguably don't make sense logically and factually, having been constantly revised and changed time after time throughout history, people have the right to know the resulting contradictions and decide for themselves if they want to believe this text as the word of God or not. Let's not judge or attack anyone. Enlightenment is achieved through facts, not poetry.

“Scholars will still be thinking about that little chestnut thousands of years from now” is such a great and fitting line to describe a lot of the scholarly research surrounding the biblical texts. Almost every verse or passage in the Bible is prone to different variant translations/versions, different interpretations, and vague details that it’s really impossible to know what the “original texts” said or intended to say. A lot of it’s lost to us now and we really can’t do anything about it. It’s crazy to look beyond the surface level of the modern copies. In any case awesome work! Hope you make more of these types of vids ;)

Actually it's not. There is this field of research call "textual criticism", and in it they deal with many ancient manuscripts. Specifically for the New Testament there are dozens of manuscripts and papyri within 100 years of the death of Christ, let alone from the time that they were written, not even mentioning quotations of the scriptures in the writing of church fathers, many of those being from the early 2nd century

If you want to study this more in depth, might I recommend getting the Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft copy of the Greek New Testament, and make sure that it is the one with the apparatus and not the reader. In it there is every variation of the text on the bottom. If you wish to truly utilize this, it might help to take some rudimentary Koine Greek

As an example of a textual variant, Romans 7:14 οιδαμεν in most versions has an accent above the yota while a few do not. Certainly this doesn't constitute a "vague translation "

@Timothy Henricson why do you feel the need to lie like that? Isn't there a rule against lying in your religion? You weren't an atheist, because an atheist doesn't believe gods exist. NSC does something here many atheist KZfaqrs can't manage: this is a video ridiculing the bible that never attacks Christianity itself once. NSC has made itnclear how he feels about Christianity, but this is a video about the accuracy of the bible, not its contents, and he stays on that subject. It's a lot easier to win people over with logic by starting small and moving slowly, and by not attacking or dismissing their core beliefs without sufficient legwork. Big props on a great video, pointing out historical facts and absurdities without attacking anyone personally.
@codybear5840

I feel NSC prolly has read the Bible more than actual Christians. I mean, I've been, well I don't think it's Aethist I am, I don't believe in god, but I don't also not believe in god. But watching his videos has had me looking at things that I was taught with a different perspective. So many thing's I never noticed before and just how illogical the Bible is. I mean it was written thousands of years ago when people didn't know anything about how the world works. And to still think that it is relevant in today's society still blows me away. I mean, it was only a few hundred years ago when our medical understanding was the 4 humors and people that blood letting was a legit form of medical practice.
@catherinestickels2591
@catherinestickels2591 3 жыл бұрын
@@codybear5840 Hey, bloodletting is totally a legit medical procedure if your problem is that you have too much blood. On a more serious note, an atheist does not have to believe that there is no god. An atheist merely does not believe that there is a god. Most atheists are agnostic. If you don't believe in a god, you are an atheist. People have tried to make atheism sound extreme and illogical by miscategorizing it, but in reality, as NSC has said, atheism is not a belief, it's a lack of belief.

@@mattpowell6291 Oop, a 'no true Scotsman' fallacy out here in the wild. For the record, this video is pretty accurate. Scholarly consensus agrees that Mark was the first gospel to be written and you'd notice that as the Gospels progress, blame over Jesus's death keeps being shifted from the Romans to the Jews. This was one of the causes for the great antisemitism in the early church. I could recommend you a book that delves well into this topic (among other Biblical stuff) but I doubt you'd want to read it. Also, they said one of the videos was one of the straws that led to them deconstructing so... it's not just one video and one thing. Your point is kinda moot.

@@monochromicornthetuna4256 To the contrary. I still learn a lot about the bible everyday. Not interested in being ignorant. The Gospels of Mark and Luke were written by individuals who heard the stories from others. They were not eyewitnesses so that has to be kept in mind when reading these Gospels. I'm sure that Mark was written first and then Luke. My point was that there are some things that scholars couldn't 100% know unless they went back in time to ask Luke like "did he deliberately leave out details to appease an audience?" Jayknight Just read the Bible, and Don’t only listen to the selected passages they preach at church. The stories are just terrible. For ex: Moses comes down from the mountain to find his followers worshiping a golden calf. So god had all 3000 of them murdered on the spot. Jepethe (probably misspelled) sacrifices his daughter to god. God murdered Job’s family for no reason. Killed all the first born of Egypt. Because the pharaoh was exercising free will. God is crazy. He even had bears attack a group of young men simply for teasing a bald man. I think it’s horrible, and I would never worship him. Even if it was proven beyond a reasonable doubt he was real. Not to mention the pure ridiculousness of the stories. Methuselah lived to 969 years old. I find that very hard to believe and have never seen any evidence of any humans living even past the age of 125, and that story is the tip of the iceberg. Jonah lived inside a giant fish for days before being spit up onto the beach and walking away unharmed. 🤦‍♂️

David Allen - Unfortunate for you, unless that final push landed you in Jesus' arms. Just because the story was made to fit the audience, it doesn't mean that the purpose is a lie. The idea is to bring people to faith, and a personal relationship with God, in the person of Jesus Christ. If you can be swayed by this mockery, you must not have been quite serious about finding the real truth about God's love. Did you never hear the prayer, "Lord, I believe, help thou my unbelief." Or even, "Jesus, I open my heart and invite you in. Come and share your love with me." If you are really sincere, either of those will work, to bring you face to face with God. Don't just follow a blind man who refuses to see, or you will both fall into the pit.

I walked away from Christianity many many years before discovering NSC. I had thought my way out of it after I compared it to science. I found it silly, petty and convincing, but I still identified as a cultural Christian. Then around 10 years ago I discovered Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. It was then I realised I didn't even respect it, and didn't need to. I knew then that I should be prepared to say as much (If asked). They also made me see the harm it caused in every aspect of life. Then I found a Christian apologetics radio show called 'Unbelievable'. It was then I realised the lengths Christian's will go to, to hang onto their faith, despite the utter lack of evidence for it. Then finally, I discovered Non Stamp Collector about 4 years ago. I laughed, and admired his clarity in demolishing a religion that never really made sense to me. Welcome back Non Stamp Collector!

@@aaronheaton2606 I thought you were coming from different angle before. Mainly, because you have to start with the premise we are all born atheists, but then converted to whatever dominant religion of closest geographical proximity. However, that's actually a quite reasonable premise, even though there might be a case made for religious inclination being a result of the way evolution shaped our biological nature: Seeking Agency everywhere may generate false positives, but they are less deadly than false negatives. If primitive instincts are responsible for our tendency to presume agency, then Atheism might not be what we're instinctively endowed with, but only what we have to -overcome- get to through logic and reasoning once we're old enough. In that case, Deconversion would actually make less sense. However, I like the term, nevertheless.

@@stevepaige7557 all of them. The timing of your comment is odd, in the three years since I wrote this comment, I have completely changed directions. I was just talking with a psychologist friend today about spirituality and individualism and how I believe that God is real in the sense that it is a real, hidden part of our psyche that is unique to us all, and spirituality is just a methodology for attempting to incorporate the Form into our conscious selves. And religion is just an attempt (a successful one in many cases) to harness that reach toward perfection in order to unify people under a banner. In other words, organized religion prevents us from individuating and becoming our complete selves. I'm sure that the creators of new religions have good intentions, they fixed themselves and wanted to share that process with everyone, but the process they try to teach is not accepting of the uniqueness of our personal "God". I like to call my new direction "naturalist spirituality" (just found out talking to my friend there's already a similar thing called "spiritual naturalism") in that it recognizes the existence of God in terms that fit into a naturalist view of the universe. I've parted with christianity about 20 years ago and even if my childhood was good, I feel almost betrayed by my family for feeding me this bullshit for so long. The only thing that makes it ok for me is that I know they were fed it themselves and in a time where information was not as easy to obtain as today. But I know people that went to Bible School for years and they actually studied the bible daily, how can they still not see all these contradictions? I know they're not bad people, they're just blinded, but they're also not stupid and know the book almost by heart. How do they get past all those things you list in your videos? Oh and your accuracy is amazing, even though I haven't been reading the bible for over 20 years, I still know pretty much all the stories you picked up as if I read them yesterday. Jesus was a metaphor for Israel and since Mark was written after the crushing Roman defeat of Judea, (crucifixion), the Jewish nation would survive and rise again from the death. The Sanhedrin rejected the story and never incorporated it, but it was very popular amongst the Hellenized jews and the Greeks. All of the Gospel writers were Greek speakers. pinkah boo Telling any child to believe in primitive nonsense, like burning in hell for eternity, is always going to be a mild form of child abuse. Indoctrination such as this forces children to fight their way back to evidence based reality while growing back up, rather than choosing to be religious once their minds can truly comprehend the implications of those beliefs. It distracts people from learning about more important things in their formative years. You act as though my religious upbringing was some sort of exception: nope, just your average middle class Christian raised by decent parents who meant well, but who were ultimately immature baby boomers who are now religious skeptics today, thankfully. However, I was definitely a Christian. Baptized at eight and ‘saved’ at 12. If you became a skeptic, how would you view your prior Christian beliefs? You would probably cringe if other Christians told you were either never really saved to begin with, or still are. There’s a difference between truly believing, and the beliefs being true. It’s usually just Christians who adhere to such illogical false dichotomies. You should watch more NSC videos. Lots to learn. You’re not going to convince many people the way you’re going. There’s a wide world out there full of science and knowledge, and don’t you find it suspicious that Christianity doesn’t want you to be worldly? Don’t you find it odd that Eve ate from the tree of knowledge, the forbidden fruit? Religion holds people back, and it’s wrong to push that mode of thinking on to children. For most people, the path of reason logically leads to naturalism, so safe journeys.

I know you and I believe that life is just a miraculous evolutionary event due to adaptions and mutations over millions of years and we’re here temporary here against all odds to live short lives that ultimately have no meaning or purpose except what we give meaning and value to. I mean eventually our lives are forgotten and everything we did or will do are gone never to be remembered and the universe never even knew we were here in the first place. I also know you believe the god of the Bible is a mass murdering psychopath who burns people forever for ridiculous crimes like not believing and slaughters millions in the Bible with ridiculous rules that no civilized society could ever implement. I do too. But she believes the nice god that saves the good people, only sending the worst people to hell. always watches over them has very modern progressive views on morality and will always love her and her family. And will never leave her. I know you and I after extensive research have come to very different conclusions about the same religion and could never believe again. But just let her believe man. It makes her happy.

Learning the actual structure of the Gospels was part of what really helped me leave Christianity. As a Christian i never actually had any church leader explain their real chronology, nor that they actually say different things at different times. I remember being confused all the time during holidays when the preacher would read a beginning of a story from Luke, then read the rest of the story from John. Once i started questioning my religion and i realized there were certain things that were ignored or hid from me by the church leaders, it made me realize _why_ they did not talk about these things. Because there are glaring problems with the Bible that they don't want to address or have young church members think about.

You've probably heard this before, but I was brought up in an extremely sceptical family. Everyone in my hometown was baptized, whether they believe or not, but my parents didn't because they wanted me to choose when I grew up. This means I was never taught the basics of Christianity, because during bible lessons at school I was separated from the class, together with the Muslims, to draw some mandanas. All throughout my childhood and teens, I was an agnostic sceptic interested in science and astronomy. It was only at around 19 years old that I started listening to actual arguments for or against God. That's when I found your videos. They really changed my life. The videos were criticizing God for being evil. That's when it clicked. Evil can only exist when Good exists, and Good can only exist when God exists. I learned the other arguments, and finally accepted Jesus Christ. My gratitude to you is immeasurable, and therefore I can only wish you all the best. You seem to enjoy being free from religion, and your fans seem to enjoy being freed from objective morality. Well, let me increase your joy by saying that you've made people happy by turning them TO Christ as well! Merry Christmas!
@andydrew03
@andydrew03 4 жыл бұрын
Evil can only exist when Good exists, and Good can only exist when God exists. That's a simple yet profound statement! I would only add that since all human societies have Good and Evil even though they have different gods and different concepts of god or even secularism then Good itself must be God rather than any particular God being Good. Good = God. They're even spelled alike! Also notice the capital G in Good. And consider Evil = Devil. Also spelled similarly! So there's no God or Devil but yet there is every God and Devil because Good and Evil already were. It's all totally not nonsense.

@wise ol' man The scientific, philosophical and moral arguments that convinced me that there's an uncaused first cause who created the world (God) automatically rules out polytheism, so Hinduism is not an option anymore. So only Judaism, Christianity and Islam are left. To know which one is true, I had to investigate what happened to Jesus Christ. The evidence for his resurrection convinced me that Christianity is true, and then I transitioned from a mere theist to a Christian.
@michaelmiky11
@michaelmiky11 4 жыл бұрын
@wise ol' man Thanks for the compliment. Well, to answer your question directly, there are multiple independent non-Christian sources that record the crucifixion of Jesus, and the belief of the apostles that Jesus appeared to them. Now, that doesn't prove the resurrection yet, but it does prove his death and at least apparent resurrection. These facts are attested by more sources than even for the existence of the Roman emperor at this time, so over the top scepticism for these facts quickly becomes ridiculous. But wouldn't you agree, that if you were to witness the resurrection of Christ yourself, that it would be unreasonable to stay a non-Christian? That's why I consider the testimonies of apostle Paul and James to be important as well. They were former devout Jews, and then radically transformed. We can also treat the gospel accounts as mere historical documents even if we don't believe the biblical narrative. So to end my short case. The crucifixion of Jesus is one of the surest facts of history. This already disproves Islam, because in Islam Jesus ascended to Heaven the night before the resurrection. And as far as sceptics go, they haven't found an alternative theory for these facts that they're willing to defend right now (swoon theory, legend theory and conspiracy theory have all been used before, but not anymore now because of the overwhelming evidence against them). So while the naturalists say: "I'm a naturalist so I don't believe a resurrection on principle," I prefer to follow the evidence where it leads.

Where as the people who "liked a video before watching it likely already is a fan of the videos topic or the creator, so it's likely that they would end up "liking" the video anyways. Perhaps in the year 3019 the Jedi order will have been subsumed into the gospel (under the Second gospel of Luke) just as earlier Sumerian works were subsumed into current scripture. The Jedi will be pictured as a brave order of disciples who tried spreading the Lord's word around the anointed gentile church of Rome, only for Satan to try to curb the movement using a corrupt Roman senator Sidius, who had slain his mentor Plagius, to become the most powerful voice in the Roman senate and ultimately Emperor of Rome - Plagius Caesar. God, upon seeing the oppression of his people, will be reborn anew via her holy blessed virgin Smee to revitalise the church. He is verified as the the lord returned via awe inspiring miracles, such as raising up of a shipwrecked vessel from the Red Sea, and topping his walk-on-water routine, by walking in the sky - hence his followers dubbing him Sky-Walker. His message will cut through the world like a saber of light using the power of the Holy Spirit, also known as the force.

1 Luke wasn't an apostle. 2 Luke wasn't even a disciple (among the first wave) and he was upfront about this. 3 When Luke came in, there were a couple of other gentiles onboard, but Paul considered them second class. So, there's little evidence known. Even their names were obscured. 4 There's a founded theory that Luke was hired by a group of religious scholars to investigate what Christianity fuss was all about and then converted. That's why he's devoid of overboard "Jewish embellishments".
