Are the biblical Ten Commandments REALLY responsible for our laws and morality, as many Christians claim? Do we owe anything to them at all? (Read on...)

Should they be considered significant? Displayed in public buildings such as schools and courts?
Yahweh, the old testament god, looked into the future and discovered that the mighty western civilization was getting by without paying all that much attention to his commandments, so he thought about changing them a bit in order for them to be reflective of the actual laws and values we hold to.

Some may argue that my claim of "three out of ten" is inaccurate, and that from a certain viewpoint it more be more like four. I can live with that. I did cross reference a number of articles on the net of people claiming it's three, others four. Either way - the purpose of the video is to show that it's closer ZERO than it is to TEN!

Funny part about christianity. In the catholic church I attended as a child, a beautiful neogothic structure built in the 1890s, there is an about 5 meters high stained glass window which depicts God the father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost. Definitely no graven images, definitely no gods beside the father.

TJ McArdle But seriously though how is context irrelevant to understand what something means ? Like seriously I'm confused as to Why Atheists want Christians to take the most simplistic de-contextualized reading of the text just to prove the point they were already assuming about the text. Like people that study littérature can do that and it makes sense, people that study law can do it to, and Historians... But when Christians work hard to be self critical and answer the question "Does the text really mean what it seams like it means" and when we want to use some empiricism and investigate then no they have to pigeonhole themselves in the dumbest simplest interpretation possible just to please our presupposition about the Bible...

@@Blackcat-nd7xy this is one of the most ignorant questions asked by theists. There is no purpose to life. We as humans give purpose to any thing we want to comfort our selves with. I did it for 40 years when I was in Catholocism and even with all the skeptical questions I had boiling in my head. Meaning of life... if there's any meaning to it, it's lost to me. The only thing I can say is that we strive to survive and with in that attempt to survive, we learn and adapt. Religion doesn't allow for that with its assertions of a deity and the false idea that with out God, we're nothing. Nonstampcollecotor is doing an awesome job with these toons. It's funny all while supporting the skit with the verses in the book about the topic. It's an entertaining way to learn. Keep up the good work.

The amount of money distributed in world is horrible why? Because people on top decided to live for themselves and no one else. 80% of people live off $10 a day. With actions come consequences. Imagine if we live by rules God gives us we wouldn't have these problems. It's going to backstab everyone eventually such as global warming. That's the thing about the 10 commandments. In the English versions of the bible, the second commandment always is something along the lines of "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image". HOWEVER, in the Spanish version is "thou won't take the Lord's name in vain". Makes sense because of our Holy Week, which uses tons and tons and TONS of sculptures of god, and have them parade around the city. also, our 3rd commandmend is "You'll sanctify the holy days". Nothing about sabbath there. But, if them commandments are different depending on which language you're using... how can they be universal?

The Spanish version is the Roman Catholic version. Roman Catholics (For some strange reason!) leave out the part about "graven images". They still end up with ten by splitting the one about not coveting into not coveting a neighbor's goods and wive in two. Of course, everybody, leaves out the one about not buggering children... Oh! wait.... They couldn't put that one in because then there would be more than ten. You can't expect religious people to take off their shoes every time they recite the commandments.

hisxmark Your point being? That still means there're different versions of the bible.. so what stops me from reprinting one that says that... dunno... Jesus was actually a black woman? @@pitufin67 you are not arguing with a theist so I don't understand your last point. As for the first part, that's why I said that rape is "included" It is not all of adultery and they are not synonymous of course. On another note, I am not a linguist but I certainly think that word has changed very much in its meaning over time. An ancient hebrew word was translated to greek/latin/who-knows what-else and then made its way into middle english and then into modern version of the language. It is quite likely that they did not mean the term the way it is meant today, I cannot prove this but it makes sense to me that it was meant to safeguard against rape and cheating mainly, and all the other things we characterize as not immoral, or at least not deserving of horrific punishment, were not big concerns back in those days and weren't really considered in the making of that law.

And what happens when people are still dictated by primitive group "thinking" many centuries later and reason:"If everybody believes so and have done so for many centuries then it must be true." At least people in the time of primitive goat farmers had an excuse as they lacked scope and were ignorant. The only reason religion still endures today is that it's still a popular idea in most places which is why it's still viable in the minds of people. In highly secular countries religion is highly personal and hence truly a choice for the individual. Even those who define themselves as "believers" don't go around preaching "morals" from the Old Testament.

@Woodledude 4 жыл бұрын
Hold up just a second. I think we can both agree that the people who wrote the bible likely lacked many, many lessons from modern education and especially modern historical context, and had no genuine supplement from any kind of deity... But calling them "primitive goat farmers" is very intellectually dishonest, and doesn't help your argument as much as you think it does. First off, the implication that farmers and/or herders are stupid is a load of bull. Successful farmers and successful herders have plenty of intelligence and creativity - Just that they specialize in growing food or taking care of animals, respectively. I would deeply value their insights into farming and/or herding, even today. And the people who wrote the bible were scholars of their time; as much is clear from the fact that they wrote a book *at all*. These were, by all rights, intelligent people of the past. Were they as philosophically advanced as the average modern philosopher? Probably not. Again, there was far less historical context for them to pull from, among a plethora of other things. But the primary problem with the bible is that it leaned heavily on mythology and folklore of the time without disclosing that fact - It probably didn't seem important to them - And it was based in their opinion of the morality of the time, and was an attempt to shape it into something they felt suited them better. And it's very possible they were quite successful in that. A theological scholar I am not, so take all of this with a grain of salt, but my impression from what I've heard and seen is that the Bible was the work of a group of highly intelligent and manipulative people attempting to secure a great deal of power for them and their children. Painting them as hapless morons, or worse, simple farmers, is a disservice to the outsized and horrible consequences they caused through two millenia.

@@Woodledude Actually, the scriptures are mostly the words of crazed apocalyptic priests written down by only marginally less addled zealots who possessed a degree of literacy - and sometimes simply paid scribes who wrote down what the zealots required. The scholars you speak of were later church Elders who decided church dogma and policy, who sifted through the thousands of scriptural documents and pronounced the ones that passed their own requirement to be canon thenceforth. In fact the very first "official" christian bible was a hastily compiled collection of scriptures given authoritative status as a panicked response to a religious scholar with different ideas who had actually compiled the first "unofficial" Bible that conflicted with the dogma of the church Elders.

@@JaEDLanc There's always someone learning these things for the first time. The original comment may seem like an obvious, satirical joke to you, and I'm willing to admit it was probably meant that way. But to someone who's seeing these arguments for the first time, locked in the jaws of religious dogma, I can't help but think they may actually be inspired to do some research upon being presented with information like this. Unlikely? Certainly, with the way things were phrased in the OP. But if that person does do some research and finds yet another excuse to dismiss atheism as misguided bullshit, instead of realizing it's a reasonable discussion of grave importance, I can't help but feel we've done the world a disservice. I never want to be the smartest person in the room. That's a feeling I'm all too familiar with from my childhood, and I've always hated it. I'd far rather be surrounded by people far more intelligent than me. That means I have an opportunity to learn and grow that would otherwise not be afforded to me. It helps me believe society has reasonable, intelligent people in it. I'd much rather look dumb in comparison to the people around me. The comment above yours I found to be, if a little off in tone by my own preference, still reasonably informative and personally educational. I should still probably do my own research on the subject, come to think of it.

Nah - it couldn't have been that - could it? If he had come back down with the tablets and said "Now I've spent a long time carving these, and this is how I want you to behave", the people might have said "Oh do you, now?!" On the day Moses comes down from Mount Sinai with the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments, he discovers that the Israelites have created a golden calf. To punish the people, Moses gathers a group of men and takes the following action in the book of Exodus, Chapter 32: Then he [Moses] said to them, "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.' " The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. So... one minute we have God carving into stone, "Thou shalt not kill." Then the next minute we have God telling each man to strap a sword to his side and lay waste to thousands. Wouldn't you expect the almighty ruler of the universe to be slightly more consistent than this? 3,000 dead people is a lot of commandment breaking. Obviously that is a total contradiction. The reason why you find contradictions like that in the Bible is because God is imaginary.?

To be a little more accurate though, it says, apparently,or would do if it actually existed, that you should not murder. Killing for certain reasons is permissible, but murder is not. Now, in this scenario, it arguable that those 3000 were killed rather than murdered. Killed means God is off the hook. It’s about translation. “ Slave” has been translated as meaning “employee”. Put simply, this nonsense has been translated to within an inch of it’s life and no one knows what the actual document said, so they settled on the one meaning. that suits them. Which is why even Xians cannot agree what this means. If these two phrases have been misinterpreted, then my guess is that it all has.

I find it so hard to believe that at out all the detailed commandments and sins God said not to commit, God couldn't directly condemn pedophilia. Instead, I see Christians trying to stretch verses and say that when God says to love all, pedophilia is condemned under that umbrella term of love. So let's remember everyone: God can take the time to list all sexual sins except for pedophilia. Also, God can tell you in full detail how to build an ark, how to build an altar, which offerings to use- he'll also set you on fire if you use the wrong offering (Leviticus 10)- and which type of animals they can and can't eat...... but God cannot afford to waste time telling grown men and women not to groom 6 year olds. But somehow, eah=ch and every Christian is supposed to know that they CAN'T do that lmaooo

If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do. If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself,[a] he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. 9 If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. 10 If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights.(A) 11 If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.

3/10 is being extremely generous. That number six thing boils down to, "Killing is wrong... except when it isn't. See you local secular legal text for details." Same for "stealing", which is defined as "taking stuff from people illegally", where "legality" is defined, once again, by us humans. Surprise!

COMMANDMENTS 2015 1. You shall not relinquish your critical thinking in favor of a conceptual entity the existence of which you cannot validate. (We must recognize the fact that today, religion is the most serious impediment to any sensible management of the worlds peoples. Religion and belief in conceptual entities, divides humans into competing groups that will invariably argue, fight and kill each other's children over these unfounded beliefs. This has to stop as should the "polite tolerance" of totally implausible religious claims. It is time for us all to think. To think rationally; to think for ourselves. We must have the honesty, integrity and courage to admit when we do not know the answer and that the answers will not be found on our knees with our eyes closed.) 2. You should never elevate your cause above your humanity. (Humans can be moral without a belief in a conceptual entity.) 3. You should stop the practice of genital mutilation of our young, for religious reasons and the presentation of implausible religious claims, as absolute truth. Hide your face and weep if you dare to harm a child. 4. You should not tolerate the subjugation and mistreatment of people, particularly women, based upon ancient or religious text. 5. You should honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not have sex irresponsibly, without consideration of it's consequences or without consideration for others and will insist upon safe sex practices. 8. You shall not steal or "rip people off" in the name of religion. 9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10. You shall not covet. 11. You shall not condemn people on the basis of their ethnicity or their color. 12. You shall not condemn people for their inborn nature. (Why would God create so many homosexuals only in order to torture and destroy them?) 13. Do not ever even think of using people as private property, or as owned, or as slaves. 14. Do not imagine that you can escape judgment if you rob people with a false prospectus rather than with a knife. 15. You shall rigorously pursue a verifiable truth and develop your empathy. Be aware that you, too, are an animal, and dependent on the web of nature. Try and think and act accordingly. 16. You shall strongly oppose all and any efforts to incorporate religion into government or the military. 17. You shall wear clothes for protection, fashion or humor but not as a propitiation to a conceptual entity, the existence of which we cannot validate. 18. You shall refrain from dragging inappropriate beliefs and rituals from the past, into the present. 19. You shall recognize that cultism is a damaging and corrosive pursuit. (Human beliefs and strange rituals are learned, they are not part of human DNA. It is time to understand that that we can all get along if properly educated.) 20. You shall not present religious pseudoscience as education. 21. Governments should discontinue tax exemption for religion and stop the support and perpetuation of implausible religious claims that cannot be validated. Some courtesy of C.Hitchens
