My mom was from North Korea and came to South during the Korean War and she used to make this dish for us all the time. It was one of our favorite dishes. She made the stuffing with diced onions, red chili paste and lots of dried anchovies. She would take the heads off the anchovies and crush then bodies into small pieces with her fingers. Then she would add a little bit of soy sauce and mix them by chopping them together even more with a knife. Then she would stuff the eggplants and steam them.

Thank you for your recipes and the stories you share. I'm still crying. My grandmother and great grandmother fled Mexico when they were younger and I was grateful to be able to hear their stories of what they endured before coming to California. Sometimes we take for granted how blessed we are here. Thank you again.

You are such a beautiful human being. This story made me cry. It's very hard to be in situations like this. When I was 11 my family and me tried to escape from war in Afghanistan. On our way from Russia to Europe my pregnant mother and father were arrested from the border police officers and my 3 siblings and me could escape with my uncle. This experience is still my nightmare. I dream often this scene and how my 4 year old brother cried after my mother. My mother and father came after 2 years to Germany and my mother lost her baby because of the stress. But we were lucky because we are united now. Why human beings can't live in harmony and peace together. This world makes me sad.

I'm so relieved your family are together again, but my condolences for your mother's lost baby...

Maangchi. While I love your recipes for sure, I cherish your stories about your past and, now, the past of others. You have a way of bringing us all along with you as if we were there sharing in the joy, or the pain. It would be a great joy if not only South and North Korea united but, even more so, how wonderful if all the world united understanding we are all one. That we're all mom's and dad's and children and creators and cooks and food eaters and want nothing more than for all of our whole human family to be happy and well fed. Many thanks for sharing your wonderful recipes and stories! I so appreciate what you bring to my life.

I am not Korean myself, however, I am going to make this recipe one day for all Koreans to wish for peace. I do not support either the Americans or the North Koreans in this scary and confusing conflict, nor do I intend to get political here. However, I just want to say that the safety and peace on the Korean Peninsula has been on my mind these days and I am wishing only for the absolute best for ALL Koreans. North or South Korean, the important word here is ''Korean'', not North or South. As a neighbour and someone who also shares the East Asian heritage, I just hope we can keep the peace whatever the issue is. Yes, of course something always happens regardless of where you are on earth, however, we all must learn to respect and live with each other regardless of if we do or don't like each other, right?

Koreans are good people. Kind, hardworking and a lot of integrity, especially considering all the turmoil that that little country's gone through. My mom was a teacher in Seoul for years; she often talked about how honest and family-oriented folks there were. It's extra heartbreaking that these tight knit families and communities are separated so brutally by powermongering despots. I hope if the North and South ever come back together, it's through peace. The innocent people deserve that much. P.S. totally trying out this recipe soon :o Making me hungry as always

My Mother a and her family left N. Korea when she was 8. They went over the mountains to S. Korea, they had to hide there from everybody because each side didn't trust the other. Her father was shot and killed during that time. My mother, her mother, older brother and sister, and her younger brother made it to S. Korea. Her mother became ill and died, her older brother and sister had to make it on their own, while my mother and her younger brother went to an orphanage. This is where her younger brother disappeared. My Aunt thinks about him every day and wishes she knew where he was and if he is alive. I didn't even know about this until recently, I had thought my mother was the youngest. I made your Hotteok with noodles and veg for my Co-op, they loved it. We just got our weekly box of veggies today. Guess what was in it, Asian eggplants! What timing! I won't have to drool for much longer, dreaming about making this dish, going to cook them tomorrow.

I can't imagine that mom's feeling... Thank you for sharing the recipe with this story to people who didn't know about Korea's separate family and "It's too far story to me and no composure now to think about them" said like me. Thank you so much.

BHASRAH BOONYARITHI probably too dangerous for them all to go back. With the entire family being sent back, it raises the chance of the NK officials noticing they had tried to escape. If that were to happen they would all die.
