No. While reddit itself is ... we human beings almost can't help but get attached to things. Thus the hypothetical person becoming invested in reddit awards shows they're just human too. Im sure something you're invested in is stupid to them too. Investment allows our perception of time to go from fast and unremembered to memorable. Idk, at the end of the day we all just have but allergies.

If they (the parents paying for the rehearsal dinner) chose the place and "agreed" they would cover x amount of hours of use for the restaurant it isn't entirely unreasonable. Cleaning an entire commercial kitchen in one go is dang near never done because of the vast amount that has to be cleansed. They had to clean walls, refrigerators, freezers, probably a walk in refrigerator, grease traps, microwaves, pantries, fryers, ovens, stoves, extraction hoods take a few hours alone sometimes, every prep bin had to be washed then bleached, everything that was prepped prior to this request had to be sealed in it's entirety, all prep work for that day had to be done hours after it normally would've been. Kitchens clean every day, a lot of stuff gets cleaned once a week or once a month, anything that isn't a dish, cutting board, or cutlery gets sanitized every few days. Basically every commercial kitchen is that way. Like I don't think they mind if they get compensated, but even then if this is sprung on them right before and was never discussed it makes sense they would be miffed. They would've dedicated an entire refrigerator and microwave away from everything else for a whole day for one bowl of spaghetti because they wouldn't just be like "I'll extra not eat an animal or product tomorrow" or just like...ask if she could bring her own bagged salad from ShopRight or Jug and Loaf...

I have a friend with celiac disease, and when he tries a new restaurant, it's basically a 90% chance they'll ignore him mentioning that he's actually gluten intolerant and not just trying to avoid it because that's what's cool now. For instance, he can eat french fries, but they have to be done in a different frier than things that are battered, like chicken or fish. Restaurants always assure him they use a separate frier, but he finds himself exploding the bathroom a couple hours later, the majority of the time.

I'm giving a strong NTA to the titular post. I work in fine dining and all dietary restrictions are heavily accounted for. Food runners aren't even allowed to take the dishes with dietary alterations to the tables, the server must. It can be annoying but it doesn't take an army or hours.

Unfortunately there is a thing where people don't take people's allergies seriously and would try to test people's allergies by putting things they are allergic to in their food for instance, with obvious results. I'll never forget that heartbreaking story with the girl with the coconut allergy. Her grandma didn't take it seriously and used it in her hair. She died in her sleep. Allergies are nothing to joke with, yet people will insist it isn't that bad and play around with you til you stop being able to breathe. Same thing with invisible conditions, they don't believe you unless they can see it for themselves.

I worked in a restaurant during college that catered to people with severe food allergies. We had extensive rules about how to treat every guest with an allergy and even the most mild allergies were treated with care. And even we didn’t do anything as crazy as that restaurant. I suspect they knew she was lying and in an attempt to be as petty as humanly possible they went through that process to justify charging her more money. I mean worst case scenario should’ve been they go buy a new pan/pot specifically to cook the food if they are concerned about cross contamination but honestly that’s not necessary. For allergies someone would thoroughly handwash the cooking utensils and pot/pan before any cooking occurred. And we would notate the allergy on every course no matter what. Like if the allergy was to lamb and then ordered one scoop of ice cream, we’d still notate their allergy to be extra extra safe. It’s annoying to lie about your allergy but it also is insane they took her reasonable food preferences and ignored them completely to serve her food she did not want to eat. This post makes me pissed off because I am not vegan but it’s bare minimum decency to not serve someone animal products if they do not want to eat animal products.

It is tho? Laws are about equality not equity, as a restaurant you are obligated to serve food from the same menu at the same prices to everybody, not about making sure everyone can eat whatever they so desire. Making sure that your food doesn't contain a single possible atom of peanuts costs a lot, why do you think 90% of chocolates and such have "may contain peanuts" written on them? Because it's much simpler to shift the blame, then to handle peanuts so carefully as to make sure that not even a tiny piece gets into not peanut products. Every single gluten free thing costs more as well. Making food with your dietary restrictions in mind costs more, so you'll pay more it's that simple.

commenting for the engagement and not because I feel morally compelled to: Reddit is so wrong about the vegan situation. Yes, saying that you have "life threatening" food allergies was a dumb soultion to that problem but here's why I don't blame them: Like any normal person OP didn't start off with the idiotic C plan but instead (firstly) simply informed the kitchen of their vegan diet and then (secondly) really tried to bring home to the person most responsible that they do not want animal products. Instead of just refusing these wishes the kitchen tried to trick OP into eating something they explicitly twice told them they do not want to eat. In other words, they betrayed the first two sane choices from OP so I, again, really don't blame OP for not thinking of a third sane choice (for example NL's take to simply eat before the dinner) but to go with basically the "spicy" version of what they originally wanted. Afterwards OP didn't hesitate to recompensate all parties involved, just like what would've happened if they really had food allergies to begin with. So what's left is basically that the people in the kitchen had to work twice as hard for nothing. Only that they wouldn't have had to do any of that if they simply respected the wishes of a customer *not* to put something in their food. The people who were responsible for that are assholes, OP's family who are still mad at them despite having the expenses covered are assholes and OP themselves might've acted stupidly but is, by no means, the asshole here

also tbh the people talking about the whole "you're the reason why people don't take my allergy seriously!" no, that's the fault of other people that think they have the right to decide what other people put in their bodies whether they're "reasonable" reasons to that person or not. if someone says they won't eat something, just don't be an asshole about it. it's not the fault of someone else in a similar situation that people are insane when it comes to dietary restrictions

Yeah, and people blame the tiny percentage of people who lie about having allergies on this. It's the same with ableism for mental illness. No, someone potentially faking their autism on tiktok is not the reason why people don't take autism seriously. Blaming it on that singular person doesn't address anything you're experiencing. Blame it on the restaurant! Or your boss calling you slow and unsociable.

Ok I know this is from over a year ago, but the redditor who claims they worked in a restaurant and doesnt understand why they'd do that deep a clean either hasn't actually worked with food or has never encountered a serious allergy. If someone is as deathly allergic to such a wide variety of their foods as the OP had claimed they absolutely had to do a thorough clean of their kitchen. Any cross contamination could result in that person being seriously injured or dying and they can't cut corners when it comes to that, even if their food wouldn't be near it they can't take that chance. That's also why some foods have labels that they are made/processed near peanuts or other common allergens, because even just existing in the same room as the allergen can affect people with serious allergies.

One of my coworkers continued to work as a waitress until she was 8 months pregnant. My mom went the entire pregancy of my youngest sibling while single with no financial support from the father (she was given generous maternity leave tho). There is no culture in the world that expects women to take 9 months off of any responsibility while pregnant and I wonder what could have possibly put this into this woman's head. She in for a rude awakening when she realises that having a newborn is approx 1000% harder than bring pregnant.
@MelMelodyWerner
@MelMelodyWerner Жыл бұрын
there are countries with a year or around a year of maternity leave (e.g. Bulgaria). quitting, if financially stable (as according to the OP), is entirely reasonable. her refusing to cook or wait for her husband to take a bath after being mobile for a 10 hour shift, and then immediately going and telling her whole family that her husband (who, assuming OP is not lying, immediately apologized for snapping) is a dirtbag so they could mock him? that is not. that's an NTA from me. not that snapping was okay, or calling his wife lazy, but the issue at hand sounds entirely on the wife's end.
