A trip to Cunyan crags for a Tarp and Bivy,
A unconventional pitch was used, and it was so windy I ended up taking the tarp down in the night and just enjoyed the sky and views.
I hope you enjoy the video.

Hi and thanks for watching, yes sometimes you have to just get it up, no set rules, that stake that looked odd and the two up on the rocks saved the tarp in the night, before it had to come down !! Cheers

One of my favourite places for lunch. I was lucky to spend a couple of weeks staying in a cottage just by the little clump of trees down in the valley the other side of the crags last year. Wonderful base for walking. Not tough enough to wildcamp although I love the idea of sleeping in the open as you do.

Wow, your wild camp in the Northumbrian Hills looked incredible, even with the windy start! Those views are absolutely stunning. It isn't somewhere I've visited myself, but I keep seeing this amazing views, so I need to get over there! Thanks for the shout out about my debut Breakfast for The Fell Store. Glad to hear you enjoy it as much as me! Delta Ground Anchors would be a good shout for those types of conditions- they really do work wonders in those gusts if you get them secured properly. Keep enjoying the great outdoors and those tasty breakfasts! Thanks again :)

A wild night Adrian , the big tarp just catches the wind deffo the smaller one would have coped better. At least you got out , I was off thurs, fri and sat night and the weather was horribly wet and certainly not for bivvying under . Atb Dave

Hi Ade. I think the mushrooms were the Butter Waxcap mushrooms, I may be wrong though. If so, then they are edible but its recommended to leave them be as they are becoming more and more rare. You can barely find them in Europe anymore and usually only in colder climates, up high and in disused fields/grass land in the UK. Wow that was some wind on top! luckily you had the perfect spot for that tarp. Tarp and Bivy win again, almost haha. Have you got any 9inch Easton pegs? You need those if you don't, they can be expensive but tarps hold much better in the wind. If I was in this situation with the big tarp, then I would most likely use all my pegs on the upper side, then wrap the lower side (soft side) underneath me and use my body as the anchor... food for thought is all, you did nothing wrong. Great camp as always. You make me want to get back up in the hills and leave the woods for a bit.

Hi Gez, great info on mushrooms, I had thought about some form of body bag configuration but had to be in and out to be social, at the end of the day my small tarp would have been better, but it’s all a learning curve, Woods or low level certainly better in the wind. Cheers Adrian

That was the most enjoyable interesting pitch Adrian. It shows how you can get a bivy in anywhere. I don’t think a tent would have been better, they just get battered. I still think if you took two delta anchors just for the end where the msr nails were pulling out, it would have stayed put. They go in very well into soft ground. Also some times I double peg, or even secure the pegs at the end from where the wind is coming, with another peg in tandem. One behind the other. I agree a smaller tarp would be better in high winds. My tarp is a 2.4 x 1.4 metres. It took a battering on my last trip (and 1st bivy), it was rock solid. I’ve got an Alpkit airlok 35 litre dry bag for all my stuff outside the bag. Excellent bivy that Adrian, cheers.

Hi and thanks for watching, yes I love the challenge of a tarp, I may try a couple of those pegs as no heavier than my big MSR ones, I am on lighter pegs now for the summer, but will look into it Cheers

Honestly Dave it’s the best and heaviest bivy at 800g but it breathes in the north east winter weather, just a bit of damp around the foot box, it’s where your feet rise up and touch the bag to the bivy, lighter bivy just for the summer Cheers

Hi and thanks for watching, a great idea, but the weight goes up, I enjoy the flexibility of different tarps although after this one I will only carry small tarps, I have considered a poncho so it does away with the need for a coat, but I think the Paklite is cooler to walk in, choices choices Glad you enjoyed it and even thought of a great idea, def worth a think Cheers

Great video once again on a cold day here in Sussex. I have been taking porridge with raspberry’s all made up in half a jam jar then I just stand the jar in boiling water for five minutes continually on the heat . This is on a meths Swiss Army stove. Leave the lid off the jar and keep testing the temp. Works a treat and so cheap. You will need an extra long spoon to get inside the jar.
