i like your comments about the show, i found you because i wanted to know how realistic or full of shit the show is. But after some episodes of your videos i gotta say i am suprised that it is actually not that bad. I understand that its just a hollywood show and that there is still a lot of stuff wrong but its at least not as horrible as some medical shows or such. Some shows are just notoriously wrong.

Not a reason that jumps right out to me to be honest. Policing is a game of inches, and if putting your car in a different place can give you an edge in safety, then by all means be tactical about it

@OnlyCops

@Lexduden
@Lexduden 9 ай бұрын
They didn't have to use deadly force because he gave up when forced to choose between body bad or handcuffs. They could have said that in the first place but then it wouldn't be as dramatic. There was a not insignificant chance of his lifeless body pulling on the string. And then you have a dead inmate plus a dead aunt. I don't see how they negotiated in any way, shape or form. They clearly told him what his options are. That's not negotiating. On a totally different point, how many cops does a hostage situation need, that there aren't enough to help deal with a really sticky situation.
@OnlyCops
@OnlyCops 9 ай бұрын
In this very specific instance (all be it fictional) it definitely was the best case outcome and a total win by the cops. Most hostage situations are less sophisticated (no wires and whatnot) and often present and much more simple solutions. The tactical discussion is always going to be centered around the safety of the victims over the suspect (think of the Uvalde situation and you'll understand a bit more why). And a typical hostage situation just needs enough cops to contain the situations. The negotiations shouldn't take more than 2, but often creating a perimeter can be much more taxing and often requires more than 5 just to ensure the situations can move away from where the negotiation is taking place. But like all things, tactics/needs will change depending on the particulars of the situation.

@@OnlyCops Ah okay, I know one big change was police accountability was super heightened
@OnlyCops
@OnlyCops Жыл бұрын
@@Fireupland yes and no, the reality of what "holding police accountable" was spotty at best actual accountability and often times simply the proliferation of stereo types like "ACAB" and whatnot. If we had real accountability you would have seen WAY more supervisor, chiefs, and Judges going to jail for allowing bad apples to even exist within their departments in the first place. The net gain of what the news sold as heightened accountability was beat cops (good and bad) taking the fall while to system and people who allowed and protected bad cops in the first place got off Scott free to keep doing a shitty job (which is why we left and have such a poor view of high level administrators)

Interesting how you would defend Bradford pulling his gun and holding it against the door. What happens if the roles are reversed? Ok for a citizen to do that at a traffic stop? I'm guessing they would get "smoked" if they tried it.

If it's not seen and no shots are fired it's technically legal. Deadly conduct and aggravated assault require that an individuals actions place someone in reasonable fear of serious bodily injury or death. If the victim is unaware this is happening then technically it doesn't meet the criteria. I obviously wouldn't advise doing this ever, but the law is pretty clear about it. The second an officer (or a victim) sees the gun it would be a charge or authorize a certain level of force, the law is also pretty clear on that. If you've never had people go out of their way to try and kill you you wouldn't understand where this type of tactic comes from. There are parts of this world where people have to do this all the time due to the amount of violence that's prevalent in those areas. Gang members and cops alike do this when random people approach their vehicles in those places.

@@OnlyCopsI'm just playing devil's advocate -- to an extent. I generally agree with most of the points you guys make, and am enjoying the content so far. Still not 100% sold on your explanation though. Let's say the guy by the car looks down and sees the gun. Is Bradford breaking the law at that point? In the real world, are there going to be any ramifications for that? Is the guy by the car within his rights to open fire, since he has a weapon pointed at him, and no announcement has been made? (I understand he's at a disadvantage since the gun is already pointed at him, but there are a few hard parts that could deflect the bullets, or maybe he has his own gun out of sight. Again, devil's advocate). Appreciate your response, good food for thought.
@OnlyCops
@OnlyCops 3 ай бұрын
It's 100% a valid question! (Literally one of the best ones I've ever seen in the comments section). The short answer is yes under a vary small and hard to prove set of circumstances. But there are definitely some legal considerations to be made. The most likely and reasonable response would be if the guy by the car sees officer Bradford's gun, he could definitely file a complaint. There is a lot of president for him winning a civil suit for an unjustified use of force if a jury or judge finds that the complaint did not pose a reasonable threat to officer Bradford. This would also likely lead to disciplinary action from the department going from written reprimand all the way to termination depending on the circumstances. Details matter and every situation, judge, jury, department, and jurisdiction sways one way or the other on how to interpret "reasonable" but the fear of serious bodily injury is indeed a two way street. You see this play out in even justified uses of force where the force applied cause undue injuries or was not merited according to policy or the law and law suits and termination/charges are applied to officer's in these types of situations (which I believe they should be). It is codified in law (at least in Texas) that there are situations/circumstances where civilians could use deadly force on an officer if their misconduct posed an unjustified threat to them. But the "reasonable and articulatable" aspects of that threat is higher hill to climb often times for civilians mostly due to them not having the duty to intervene or conduct investigations on behalf of their agencies body or jurisdiction and or the lack of evidence. It's why I'm a big supporter of bodycams or even people recording with their phones police interaction and even civilian disputes. It would be the only way to not have circumstantial or anecdotal evidence to be between you and a murder charge.
@lowflyr
