sergeant grey is the watch commander, he rarely leaves the station that's probably why he doesn't have a body camera, i remember clearly that everytime he actually gets dispatched somewhere he does have a body camera on. (also could be an error from the director in this episode)

That makes a lot of sense, it's typically part of the uniform code so no matter where you are you have to have it on you. Thank you for the comment 😊

@@OnlyCopsI think there are a few scenes where they go to get the gear and all the body cams are on wall chargers. I think they only put them on as the go out. If you go back and look the guy right behind him has the mount but also no body cam( 3:11). I'd imagine it's due to every inch of the place already having security cameras inside?

He doesn't always get dispatched out. There are lower level supervisors for that. Notice that he has 3 stripes up and one stripe down whereas Tim only had 3 up when he was promoted from corporal to sgt.Sgt. In larger departments, the watch commander's job is to be the senior NCO to the commander of the station. That means disciplining minor, non termination offenses, approving reports, and otherwise taking care of your people.

I was in the process of moving cross country. I had just got to my new city after driving almost twelve hours. It was 10pm, raining, and my phone battery had died. I was trying to get to my friend's house so I pulled into a gas station for directions. When I pulled out I had forgotten the road had split into north and southbound lanes and went the wrong way. I quickly realized my mistake and turned around but a Deputy saw me and pulled me over. My car was full of boxes and my two pugs were barking at the cop. He got me out of the car so that we could talk without being barked over. He said he saw my Arizona tags and figured I wasn't from the area. He just wanted confirmation that I wasn't drunk. He pulled out his phone and asked me for the address to my friend's house and wrote down directions. Super cool Deputy.

Our non-sworn personnel wore similar uniforms to ours, the only difference being their badge. There was one who would dress in uniform on days off and spend the day making rounds, eating at different "officer-friendly" places. I had a Sgt patrolman once say that in his community there is a restaurant who is more than happy to give a police officer of that jurisdiction a meal ticket. That being said it was "suggested" that you leave a tip the value of your meal, plus 10% .Then the restaurant can decide if it is to pay for the meal or it goes to the server.

I find Sgt Grey was being a tad hypocritical with the "officer entitlement" bit. Cause earlier that same episode. Nolan, Chen and West (the rookies) were out enjoying a night out. When they spot Sgt Grey off duty having dinner with his wife. Grey spots them, walks up to them and bascially tells them "i am enjoying my date right now and do not want to think about the job tonight, so leave." Which the rookies do. Until Nolan gets involved with a situation which leads to an escalation and an arrest performed right in front of the table Grey and his wife were sitting at. Nolan being the one to stand at the podium was a bit of a punishment for that. I find it hypocritical that Grey brings up officer entitlement when he himself more or less used his higher rank as an officer to make them leave just because he didn't want to see them when he was off duty.

Josh mentioned that kid and he gave him a chance, I am sorry but I still think that was the right call in that situation. It is one of those you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make the horse drink, if he had done a murder one later afterwards, who is to say he hadn't done 2 of them or even shoot a cop once he had been criminal hardened coming out of detention? Sometimes the upbringing puts people on the wrong track, and they haven't just been dropped there, it has been a slight drift to that point over time. Only ones that can bring him back is the right network, friends and family and he may have had neither, but you gave him a chance at it, he chose to not take it. But the information you had in that moment, the information you had to act on could have both lead to the exact same outcome regardless is what I am getting at, hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20 and is... useless for that situation that has happened.

So question, gratuity comes up quite a bit. Would you classify a store that sells watches, rings, and other expensive things that has a 15 percent discount for ANY first responder including Police, Fire, Medical, and even dispatchers (and even yes military) with proof (no other requirement such as living in-state) as a form of graduity? Noting this discount only applies to watches and other things deemed useful for the job that may not otherwise be provided or paid for in any way by a department. I am curious. Edit: NOTE: It is not free (like most restaurants) also you never said it, what is your thought on a citizen paying for a meal in a restaurant or fast food restaurant (a trusted one). I could give more detail but am going to keep this open.
@OnlyCops
@OnlyCops 3 ай бұрын
I would definitely see "qualified professionals" discounts as a type of gratuity, given that it's only applied due to status. The only slight difference I see is it's almost never a free thing and often the brands that offer them just want to see "qualified professionals" using their products because that association is damn near free advertising. "Influencers" get actually free products for the same reasons. This also happens in other professions like construction, education, and medical fields. I'm neither here nor there on the practice, but I do think it could definitely be abused in certain contexts.

It is definitely a very cool gesture and for military personnel there is no conflict of interest because they don't choose how the law is being applied. The officer can't stop you from paying for their food, but like we said in the video, in this day and age officers have to worry about the perception of bias and accepting gifts is looked down upon and often prohibited by general orders.

This watch commander tends to get on my nerves, In fact the chief as well before she got written off the show. Their lectures felt like a bunch of "virtue signaling" and their lectures were often super unrealistic like they see their officers as robots, granted officer's should be held to a higher standard and be rid of any temptations that could cause problems, but they often play off this idea that little things will lead you into bigger issues when it could be the simplest thing when its really a case by case scenario, "Officer Jake accepted free coffee at a gas station, now he's going to be prone to asking for more things on his next visit and possibly be more prone to bribery" which is bullshit because what it doesn't take into account is the officer's character, What does Officer Jake normally do in his day to day life and work life.

I understand not letting the establishment give you free food but I as a fellow customer, if I see an officer in uniform or military in uniform, and I have the financial wherewithal and there’s not 15 other people in uniform, then I will buy their food for them because I appreciate what they do.and with that not being an establishment doing anything, they have no real way of it happening again or whatever.

What’s fun is riding with a different city in plain cloths. They meet another unit at Perkins. I try to pay. “Your money is no good here” I tell them I would get in trouble, I need to pay, have a receipt. *quietly off to side*. I noticed the Officers tossed in (at least) a $5 tip on a $10 free meal. What’s wrong with that? Some cities it’s ok. Others… Coffee other than coffee shops. The cup costs more than coffee. The dog eating nuts. We need more context. From her driving when leaving. The ticket was necessary. And a 2nd. I love my dog. It follows from her departure she likely was not safe blowing a stop sign, in school zone. Were kids there? During hours kids are normally crossing? I will NEVER do another Police Escort *unless cross traffic blocked*. People are idiots. They pull over, squad passes. Some try to pull in like they intend to draft the squad car. There I am in +9000 lb ambulance trying to avoid them. I am lit up like Christmas. Front siren deafening Officers in squad car ahead. What does driver do when they realize? Panic stop. People lives are more important than dogs. IMO. “I realize you are worried, scared. But if you crash your dog might not get seen. No ticket if you slow down drive carefully to vet”. You saw her pull out, not looking.

Most of the time there are cameras everywhere in a station so it wouldn't be necessary. But the general rule of thumb is if you're on duty as a sworn officer you should have a bodycam on since you could be called at any moment to do LEO duties like responding to a 911 call or other emergency. It shows a lot about an agencies culture if all sworn personnel aren't prepared to do more than sit at a desk.

Having a knife was fine but it was a utility tool as opposed to a push blade which is intended for fighting. Our regs were that they could no be visible. It's legal to have them, it's just frowned upon and or against general orders/uniform policy.

Regarding that you have not charged the kid. You just don't know. You don't have the cristal ball that tells you if you helepd the kid or if that kid would harm someone again. In my county we believe in resocialization and not punishment. Does it always work? No! But In most cases it does. So even if this went wrong in your case, In my books you made the right decision. Don't punish yourself. Because if we go down that "what if" road and that in the sense that someone can or could do something bad to another person then we all would have to to jail for ever jist becauset here is the chance that this could happen. You might not agree but maybe you get my point.

I get it that police officer shoould not and can't expect money as a gift put little things like coffee? I can't take money gifts either in my job, I am not american and I work in the social/medical sector within my country, but something like a candy bar or a coffee is ok. I would not get trouble for it and I would not even think to treat one person better over another just because one offered me coffee and the other person did not. Have to say IDK how it is with the police in my country, but I am almsot sure it's the same. And I can't say they treat people different because of a coffee. But laws in countrys are different, I understand that, of course. 🙂
@OnlyCops

Policing is such a particularly sensitive spot due to the power given to them over others in certain situations, though I definitely think it is a gray area, I still lean towards a zero tolerance policy on accepting gifts outside of food. It's too easily abused in government and I really think it should apply to more parts of our government

The best justice would be the guy having the charges thrown out and a easy lawsuit against the officer. Clear and cut entrapment.
@OnlyCops
@OnlyCops 9 ай бұрын
Entrapment would require that the officers setup the conditions for the offense, technically the victim did and the suspect could have just paid foe the food and there would have been no offense/arrest. Though I'm with you that it's a lame charge it would absolutely stick and I'm not one to take the side of ol dine a dash dude as someone who used to work in restaurants. There is a special place in hell for those kind of people
@YummyCatgirlMilk
@YummyCatgirlMilk 9 ай бұрын
@OnlyCops That's not how entrapment works. It would be the officer pushing you do something illegal. Such as stealing more food than you already had. Also, her clearly knowing it wouldn't be paid for is also theft. It's implied that she ordered the dessert and took it for herself. That's mutiple charges against the officer
