I'm currently a Police Officer, my peers and I have sat together and watched this episode over and over, and discussed all our schools layouts and how to approach so we never have any radio confusion. On day shift I go around and start just pulling on all the external doors to see if they are unlocked. Personally I believe all departments from Federal Agency's to school security guards should run threw drills in the schools in which they are close to, for this kind of situation. STOPPING THE THREAT AND PROTECTING THE CHILDREN IS OUR HIGHEST PRORITY.

The cop who ran out with the girl and hesitated to take an open shot I feel is VERY accurate - not every cop, even with training, knows how they'll react in a lethal situation like this. He was a probably (like you said) a day-shift cop thrown into this high-stakes mess where his biggest threat is getting a papercut at the printer. I live in Canada - and a cop like this probably has never drawn his gun before on duty. Or dealt with screaming and piles of dead children. He froze, and understandably so.

I know it isn't as obvious when reacting like this: the beginning of the shooting is filmed in one extremely long shot (I think it's almost 10 minutes without any cuts). In my eyes that's an absolute masterpiece production-wise.

So yes, those 2 dudes are the main guys in the show - but the show is kinda all about the mental health and story of the division. So, a lot of the characters that acted strange, like the guy who carried out the girl, or the officer that got shot and hesitated, it was based around their fucked up mental state that was already established in the show. So they are known to the viewer to be a lil unstable already. It's also a Canadian show as you guys know. And quite frankly, these situations dont really happen in Canada. There's been maybe half a dozen like it in the past century. So a lot of the uniform officers will not have extensive training on active shooters. So the instances where they miss opportunities to neutralize the threat or make a weird move are actually kinda realistic. These aren't American cops. They don't have patrol rifles, or plate carriers to grab, and they don't have school shooting drills or training specific to that. So the mistakes are an intentional move by the writers.

The original 19-2 dates back from 2011, so that scene was probably in 2012. It was inspired by the Dawson College shooting in Montreal in the early-mid 2000s. If I recall correctly, following that shooting, Montreal police learned from their experience and instituted policy and training changes such that their officers would follow basically the same advice you gave: get in quickly, find the shooter and isolate/neutralize them.

Some context not given here for you guys is that Tyler, the cop who got shot was frequently drinking on the job, hence the hesitation. And the sort of cowardly cop was..well he was a massive coward and a wifebeater so no one watching the show was shocked by what he did and didnt do.

I was in a situation like this in a school: police took forever to respond, wouldnt enter the building under fire, radio traffic gave dispatch away giving the shooter a chance to fully supress the first 4 cops that went in 2 of whom didnt have body armor, and one was hit in the leg. A shop teacher had his pickup parked between the cafeteria and the shop building to move some equipment, he grabbed a shotgun from the truck and put a slug in the kid from behind as everyone else cowered, nearly ripped his arm off and he bled out. The community kept it pretty hush as it all happened in about 8 mins and a cop and the assailant are the only ones that got hurt. Ironically not far from where we lived a principal did the same thing, simply getting a revolver from his truck when he saw a kid attempt to enter the building with a sporting rifle while he was sitting in the parking lot drinking his coffee. These incidents make me happy we live in the sort of place where its not frowned upon for teachers to have weapons on campus and following these encounters its now a policy at the school that teachers carry (voluntarily), half the district signed up and a young lady I went to school with is one of those very teachers.

I believe those vests are stab vests like the British use. These are Canadian. Hence not stopping bullets.

So, this scene was shot in early 2012. Protocols then were dictated mostly by Polytechnique and Columbine. Furthermore, this is based out of Montreal, Quebec. Most police officers in Canada don't have rifles, and a lot of them only wear level 2 soft armour. Furthermore, Montreal Police had a policy against earpieces for a long time. I'm not sure if that still applies, I left the city in 2016. Also, yes, Montreal used Walther PPQ's. So did the SPAL (Longueuil). They've switched to Sig's. SQ uses Glocks.

As soon as you said you responded to Six Flags, I knew where you were talking about. I am a civilian worker (Records Clerk) for our local police department in SW OK and one of our officers was there with his family when that shooting happened. Per his significant other, he immediately went into cop mode from family man mode to get his family along with some other patrons safely out of the amusement park.

Although we got our own set of problems, we Canadians generally seem to do Police shows decently lol.

Honestly depending on the school layout and the position of windows, getting kids away from the school could be a deathtrap, if you were to move them away there is a chance they end up with the sightline of a window the shooter may decide to shoot out of. Also you should react to the part where 19-2 returns to the school (Shows how the Officer who shot the guy is suffering from some PTSD/Flashbacks when he re-visits the school)

When I was in highschool i used to get so pissed off because we would have up to like 6 or 7 fire drills a year and only have maybe 1 or 2 lockdown drills a year. And then some nutcase threatened to shoot up my school and as soon as the principal came over the loud speaker I could tell based on the fear in his voice that it was real. But no other students seemed to notice. They were laughing and joking and all kinds of shit. Eventually we get out of lockdown and we had state troopers inside the school rest of the day. But they caught up with the guy and as far as I heard they let him go. Haven't heard about him since tho. I'm only 17 years old and everywhere I go I refuse to have anything in my hands im completely aware of my surroundings and whenever i go to a restaurant or anything I make sure my seat is somewhere i can see all the doors and the exits and everything. Even my bed is in a Tactically good position. It's sad I have to do that

I'm circling back to this months later and I'm thinking about the radio thing. I imagine the only reason they aren't using ear pieces is so we get to hear the radio traffic, call it rule of cool or whatever but this is clearly just for audience benefit.

The way departments get anal about attachments and uniformity is one of my biggest pet peeves. I was a reserve deputy for a decent sized county in Central Arkansas. We were allowed to have red dots or irons on our rifles. Magnified optics were not allowed unless you were on SRT (our SWAT equivalent). I asked our armorer and he said "magnification gives some shooters overconfidence. SRT can have magnification because they train more". This was back in 2016. I was prior military so i had years of experience with the ACOG 4x but couldn't use one because the armorer thought some people took bad shots when they could see things better. I went to a different department in 2019 which was a lot more lenient. While it is true some people try to substitute gear for training and skill there is this thing called qualification and in service training to put these theories to the test. Qualification isn't the real thing, but you can do this thing called an experiment where you give a pool of deputies a magnified or unmagnified optic and see what happens. But thats way too big brained an idea for admin.

This is the only episode of this show I've seen, and I've gone back to watch it at least half a dozen times. Sometimes, a guy just wants to see tension on screen. The extraction/bridge scene in Sicario is the same way. There's a locker room scene later in this episode where they're discussing having to turn in their firearms as part of the investigation, and the officer who grabbed the girl and ran says he didn't have to give his up because he never fired, *clearly* upset that he'd let down the team by getting scared. I would have loved to have seen you react to the aftermath part of the episode too.

This scene plus the fact it has Jared Keeso in it (Letterkenny) got me to start watching the series as a whole and I can't recommend you check it out enough. Idk that it has enough "action" for it to be something you put on the channel but still very much worth a watch.

How are there no cops on the first floor securing the area and securing every stairwell entrance once unit 19-2 is chasing and engaging the suspect on the second floor? They’re having a whole Benny Hill chase all through the first and second floor.

Canadian here, 19-2 is a quebec show. School shootings are rare in Canads, but, lockdowns are not automated. Most janitors and some teachers carry Alan keys. All staff carry ID card readers, those only exist at the front door or staff only doors. For student doors there is no "lockdown" button.

I like the real-life commentary with you guys, since this was an line of work for you and at the very least, you pointed out what would happen in an real-life scenario vs in an tv show. Secondly, this might be the most lowkey high tension scene for an tv series in the entire history of tv series in the world, ever. That 12 minute one shot was evenly chaotic, especially whey you as the viewer is in awe of what's happening around the environment and the total madness that is the school shootings. So it’s been said before but this is based on an actual shooting that happened in Montreal. Shooting took place at a college campus and it was just as chaotic. I was in high school when it happened and my teachers were pretty stressed listening to it on the radio. The end result was that the local police basically were retrained for these scenarios where a lot of the things you were pointing out are actually done. Incidentally, when my school was threatened to be shot up we had a few cops show up as “security” but not much else happened. My parents were pretty pissed too because they found out about the threat on the radio and not from school administrators 🤷🏽‍♂️

The scene where they go back to the school after the shooting and as they walk around and you just hear the screams echoing and the gunshots…..😢

my biggest thought about this show is how fuckin massive this school was. My school had like 600+ students which isn't super large, but compared to the size of this school, its like comparing a Wawa / Seven Eleven to a Walmart in terms of size.

I sometimes think that kid with the headphone is an idiot, then I remembered I spent 30 minutes of a code red inside of a piano room within the choir room, only to come out and see everyone was still sitting there cause I had eaten lunch with my headphones on. It was a nearly soundproof room. Thankfully the incident was not at the school, but a hostage situation at the loan shark place down the street.

I know that they do have Paramedics, that do train with the Police Tactical Operations Unit in New South Wales , Australia. The Paramedics aren't armed but do know what to do in a situation where armed assailants are about. They also carry the protective gear like body armour and a helmet. Special operations Paramedics I think that they're called.

I read that most "mass shootings" have been stopped prematurely by friends, family, and school "reporting" and that the ones that actually get that far are pretty rare statistically. That's scary. Perhaps more training on what and when to report would be helpful at and more productive than focusing on finger-pointing or which laws to change after the fact?

Important information: Canada does mot have standard rifle training. Most officers train with pistols and shotguns, sometimes rifles, but most officers don't carry rifles. Not even in the car Rcmp (Federal Police) got rifle training as standard/required training, in the last 20 years OPP (My province's provincial police like state police) has had it before RCMP. If your looking for Canadian content look up the Mayerthorpe tragedy, Nova Scotia mass casualty shooting, moncton shooting, All of these are Shootings where cops were killed because of Command failures. Moncton - 3 constables dead 2 constables shot. Mayerthorpe- 4 federal constables dead. Nova socita mass casualty shooting, 1 constables dead, 21 civilans dead, plus a constable almost murdered by SWAT when guarding a fire hall

The "first kid that helped him escape" comment is shitty. 1. The two kids were killed. You can see the same orange shirt on one of them after they talk to the lunch lady. 2. The kid is a kid and probably doesn't have training. They just wanted to live.

I just start to watch your channel yesterday and i enjoy in your videos, country i live Croatia in Europe, response / patrol officers would not go inside school to take shooter / shooters, they would wait for firearms tactical unit, response officers in Croatia have long firearms and bulletproof vests in trunk and they would take this to secure the scene.

When i was in highschool the halls were color coded ie light blu=english yellow= math maroon=government/social studies the science and industrial arts part was off the cafeteria the schools been renovated since i graduated and i probably wont be in that school again till my kids are old enough and hopefully i wont have to go in there as an officer but because the halls are color coded it should be easier to navigate

Do you think at 13:00, those other cops should have announced themselves in some way before coming up behind their colleagues? I don"t know the protocol, but since this is such a high-pressure situation, even if the main guys are expecting the shooter to be in front of them, being startled by something behind them probably isn't the best thing to have happen (although another "shout out" to their calmness), even if the people startling them are their colleagues. I mean, a quick look behind that door would have shown that the main cops were standing their, and then they could have knocked or said something before stepping out. Thoughts?

Before i comment on your reaction i'd like to know if what kind of training you got as a leo and if you got one of those asinine "warrior mindset" trainings. We had two muppets trying those on us as part of the Atlas trainings back in the day and 90% of people rightfully walked out.

A lot of this is hard to decipher because I'm not quite sure about the differences in lethal force in Canada vs the USA I'm born and raised Canadian, and I've only heard of maybe two or three shootings here, one was a mass shooter dressed as police in Nova Scotia, the other was a shooting on a farm, the owner thought the guy was trespassing for malicious reasons, but he was supposedly just cutting the yard. for NS, the guns weren't legal, I'm not sure about the farmer, but standing ground with lethal force isn't legal as a civilian here, you can get charged for hitting someone in self-defense, and forget about it if you're armed in any way. As for cops, I don't know the stance, I haven't heard of any OIS here, either taking fire or giving it

You should watch the French version of this, it’s the original a lot more real and engaging, this version is meh, but the other with Real Bossé and Claude Legault feels less Hollywood and more real, in the French version you feel like it’s the real deal and not some rehearse thing! Just saying!

The frequency they’d written the officers leaving themselves vulnerable is insane. Concealment is not cover; both ways. Jiggling doors while standing full in the threshold is a bad idea + Discussions when someone can shoot through walls is a bad idea. Windows are death ports. Unchecked rooms/hallways in an area the shooter fled to are equally dangerous. Few trailers to set security on cleared areas, retain rear security (there were quickly enough LE on scene for this). Unsuppressed close quarters peeping without a raised weapon towards a shooter having a bead on your position. The hesitation and audible discussion over dropping an exposed shooter. The abject inability to even try to physically assist your dying partner. Flagging open areas with body/limb exposure and bad angles. The idiocy of deconsolidating an additional asset to your fireteam multiple times to lone wolf themselves (just on an errantly misplaced principle of a partner system) increasing their own risk of confliction with other units. Etc. Dramatically - Very sobering for people all the same.

You guys said they had a few opportunities to stop the threat unfortunately the threat had multiple hostages during most of those encounters if they had rifles id say yeah take the shot cause theres a slimmer chance of missing the target and hitting the hostage by accident but with pistols at the distance they were in the cafeteria with multiple hostages and concealment i can see why they didnt take the shot

Meanwhile I'm just over here in Sweden in complete awe that you guys even have to have this much knowledge about school shootings. To a point where you can watch a fictional clip like this and draw real parallels to situations you've actually been in. Now, I understand that in America specifically there's a lot of pride in being able to own a gun, and protect your family and your home and all that jazz. I get that most likely that's never going to change. But here's a novel idea: You. Don't. Need. An. Assault. Rifle. For. That! Want to own a handgun that you're trained to use and keep safely in your home in case of an emergency? Fine. But you don't need to have access to anything as high powered as a rifle. I usually see people argue that "well, even if they just have a handgun they can still murder people" and while this is true in a general sense, a handgun does not compare to an assault rifle. The damage you can do with one does not compare to the damage you can do with the other. And some people are just so gosh dang insistent on owning guns that you want to rip your hair out. There's an older episode of Dr. Phil (yuck over that guy, but I digress) where a mum's on the show because she's concerned that her young son might actually be a budding school shooter. Dr. Phil is like "so ya'll got any guns in your home" and the mum replies "oh, yes, about fifty of them". THE HECK?! Who on earth needs that many guns?! And in a home with someone you actually suspect might take them and go out and murder kids?! Where would you even store that many guns? Like, in ten gun safe's tucked against a wall? In bowls around the house like violent pot-puri? Dear lord, make it make sense! Sorry for the absolute rant, you guys were actually very informative and I did appreciate this video, it's just so baffling to me. When I was in school as a kid the most I had to worry about were if I'd accidentally call the teacher mum, or if Jessica had told Anna that I had said her birthday party was boring, or if the guy I had a crush on would talk to me that day... I never went to school wondering if that would be the day I would be murdered. I wish videos like this didn't need to exist because no one would ever need to have this knowledge, whether you're a cop or just a civilian.

so , this reminds me of the 1st time my bestfriend caught up in some shooting when he was a rookie officer and in the middle of the shooting he sends me a voice message where he asks me to take care of his parents if he never returns . To be honest , I was scared too. those were the hardest 30 mins of my life . after 30 mins we get a call stating officer Murphy is shot and is in surgery right now . Me whole panicked and all goes to the hospital finding out that he is out of danger and that dog was shot in his butt. I laughed so hard even the nurse couldn't resist , I know I am a terrible friend LOL . And to a fair coincidence , the episode of Brooklyn 99 when Detective Boyle gets shot in his butt was aired. We streamed that episode in his hospital room and that's how that show became our favourite LOL . Its Season 1 , ep 11 I guess , HAHAHA .....Hey , you can react to that too , it's a funny episode . I used to make fun of him asking if his buttholes are okay🤣. Sadly he passed away from pancreatic cancer at just 26 , I still miss his beautiful smile❤‍🩹
