Because they were children who had no idea they were being abused until well after the fact. Please sit down because you clearly have no knowledge of the case. You didn't even watch this video, otherwise you wouldn't have made this comment. She directly addresses why she took so long.

Yes he had a formidable reputation for being a good doctor. What teenager has any power to speak against that, when all the people in charge are reinforcing that reputation? You're failing to understand the power dynamics in charge of this entire situation. The children, the ones who train their entire lives; they have no power. They do what they're told by the people in charge or they don't get to achieve their dreams. People in charge; USAG, USOC, MSU, ie the people who put this man in front of the kids and kept him there.

I don't make it a point to criticise people (in this case, the athletes) for doing the thing they love but yes. A lot of the athletes are pushed beyond breaking point. Some of them make the decision to push themselves and not tell about an injury because they know they will be sat out of their chance to have their dream come true, some are pushed by their coaches. When I think about it the vast majority of the successful athletes in the sport are scarily focused and determined and have pushed themselves beyond reason. Physical and mental abuse is embedded right in the foundation of gymnastics culture, as well. It's incredibly widespread, less so nowadays, but back in the 70s - 90s...

@tenyc3449
@tenyc3449 6 жыл бұрын
Ugh, Thunderbolt, I was pushed beyond my limits as a skater, and did suffer pain and injuries. Guess what though ? It was something I loved doing and continue to do as an adult. It's part of the sport. No gymnast, dancer, or skater goes into the sport with-out the knowledge and awareness they will get injured or suffer pain in the process. The stretching alone was enough to bring all of us to tears, much less slamming into ice going 30 mph and coming down from a jump. The world doesn't just stop turning at the idea of pain though. You pick your-self up, deal with it, and move on. If you can't, then you don't. Many people stop for that reason, and more power to them for it. But, this is sport. We get injured, we get better, and we continue because we love it. In this country, that's how these sports work. Maybe in China and Russia, the schools of thought are different, but in this country, we train hard because it's something we love to do, as frustrating as the sport can be. It's not about performing in front of any-one; it's about pushing your-self to be your best. And, I'll have you know, my most knowledgeable coaches were from different countries. The American one was okay, but she didn't know how to correct and couldn't get me to the next level; it was two coaches from another country who helped me compete high-level, so maybe think about your "they're from other countries. That is your first clue" comment, and use it as a starting point with which to educate your-self. I went to skating camps, high-comp camps, travelled with my coaches, and none of them dared to do any-thing to me because that's not what every coach does. This doctor is a predator, but he is not a reflection on other coaches and doctors who don't rape and molest kids. And, seriously, speaking of kids, stop blaming them for not coming forward as teens. They barely knew what was happening to them. Hell, we live in a country where a rapist and famous p***y-grabber is president; what does that tell you about our culture and society as a whole ? We blame kids for not reporting some-thing so traumatising and awful, accuse them of doing it for the chance to compete, then turn around and elect a man who used his position of power to hurt other women...that alone pretty much sums up why we have zero authority to blame kids and teens for not coming forward.

Since a lot of them were minors there should have been some type of adult supervision by USA Gymnastics. This would likely have been uncovered sooner and prevented many of these women from becoming victims. Edit: Also, victims did tell people but they did nothing. Not all of the victims were from USA Gymnastics, but also college-aged women who were part of MSU athletes. I remember hearing an interview with one of them on NPR when Nassar was first convicted and she complained to coaches and nothing was done.

All eyes and fingers are on Larry, but there is a much BIGGER PROBLEM HERE. There are many coaches and colleagues amongst this man that I am sure had an inkling of what was happening and still fell silent. Those individuals should be held accountable as well for enabling this disgusting behavior. A round of applause for the girls who stood up for themselves and spoke up to save the future victims.

The total number of people who have come forward as victims of Larry Nassar currently stands at around 500. Some of those people were molested literally hundreds of times. Molesting so much as a single child is an irredeemable act. Nassar did it thousands upon thousands of times to an absolute minimum of 500 different young girls, ranging in age from 5-6 right up into the mid-20s.

After bullying I developed severe anger issues, for the next 3 years of my life I kept fighting against myself in my head that I was eating shit during meals. During every moment of those 3 years I also kept fighting against myself in my head that the bullies were sodomizing me and my family members. As a result I couldn't concentrate during exams and classes. I am still having self esteem issues 14 years on from the incident. I went to army and didn't do some admin work due to voice in head and army people thought I was lazy and thus bullied me as well. This is why I have zero sympathies and zero tolerance for bullies. I am 31 years old and don't even have a wife now, partly sabotaged due to bullying. I went to teach the bullies a lesson, the bullies were so "strong" until they went to call the police LOL, but like I mentioned above, I have zero regrets :)

I can’t even understand or fathom how this man was allowed to perform any procedures on these young ladies without supervision! My doctor has a female assistant with him for every examination he does with me. How could the USGA, coaches or parents allow a male by himself without their parents or the presence of a female assistant? It’s mind boggling the amount of latitude he was given and for so long. Shameful USGA

5150 OUA12 YES! Yes they can be. A local dentist office for low income families just a 2 minute drive into town from my own home, in fact, had a female dentist assistant who was a perv. She'd reach and touch the men during exams, cleanings, procedures, etc. Conscious and unconscious. She got far too many complaints both publicly and directly before FINALLY doing something. She got away with this for years! Kids go there too and they do not let parents supervise. As soon as they tried telling me that bs upon bringing my Autistic son and daughter, I was out of there. Of course I fought them and freaked on them first (relatively calm)... No one is going to tell me that shit about a pervert working there, who it was, what they've done.... and seriously expect me to allow that my kids be alome in the back if a dentist office. The office tried telling me they could call the police for me being negligent (it was a freaking Intake Appt), tried telling me CYS would take away my kids, etc. So I called the cops right then and there, told them what I was just told by the hostiles in front of me, asked if they could force me to let them take my Special Needs children in the back without me there. They totally sided with me and even asked that I put them on the phone lol. When they handed it back, I knew they did not hear anything they wanted to hear and the officer confirmed that lol. He said he reamed them and would be investigating other parents to let them know they do NOT have the right to do that with your minor children. Shortly thereafter, she was gone, but they're still a terrible place with terrible people. I know ad a parent I'd never allow any doctor to preform that 'procedure' I don't care if it's legit or not.

It's so obvious that it's the whole culture of sports that can be breeding ground for this kind of thing. Not to say abuse doesn't happen outside of that, of course it does - but in an environment that is so competitive and where parents put their children in situations with other adults whose first priority is NOT the safety or mental well being of the athletes this is allowed to happen. How many times did this happen where the athlete wouldn't ask a coach or team director or whomever "Is this normal, is this OK" for fear of being labelled difficult? Imagine if that wasn't the case, could this have been stopped years ago? Clearly there were complaints made before, but none of it significant for US gymnastics to be bothered about. Let people remember when the well being of the most vulnerable is NOT prioritized that these things happen too easily. I am not surprised at all though, USA gymnastics hasn't ever been particularly trustworthy, they totally ignored the horrible reputation of the Karolyi's because of their fame Fuck that. Everyone knows being an elite athlete is difficult, there's no need to foster a culture of silence and suffering though. There's NO reason athletes shouldn't have a positive environment to train and compete.

Kat Truong it was just a hiccup she said something like he was also the sports doctor at msu. Nothing being hidden. 156 women spoke over 7 days. The audio clip was just a real hiccup. This in our town so we have like every single station doing there own coverage.
