In the video I discuss what food plot to plant for deer hunting when you only have one large field to plant. Corn, soybeans, clovers, alfalfa, rye, wheat, buckwheat, peas, turnips, and radishes all can be great food plots. In the video I share my strategy I have built to be as efficient as possible with the limited amount of quality food plot land. I start by adding corn or soybeans as the main backbone of all my larger plots, and as the deer and other wildlife thin down the stand over the summer months, I add fall food plots to add diversity to the plot. keeping mature and young whitetail bucks on your farm during the hunting season is critical in helping them grow larger antlers and reaching the older age class. Using this strategy the food plots we produce will feed the whitetails in the fall and winter months and let them get the best possibles start towards next years antler growth.

Baiting is nice but I have an acre of chicory here in Texas and a feeder with corn/sunflowers/milo/soy beans/oats throwing out of it and the deer don’t even touch the feeder they pound the food plot

I farm and put in deer plots for myself. My plots and corn I'm going to put into silage we use high oil corn and a 30in planter and plant the soybeans right in between the corn rows (grows great) . In our plots the corn will mature and dry and the beans stays green longer.

Good deal. I didn’t have much luck with the corn and soybean plot last year…..the corn got so tall it totally dominated the field and the soybeans were quickly shaded. But that was a broadcast plot not planted with a planter or drill.

Good information Wes. I have 6 acres that I lease to a local dairy farm for corn planting and between the raccoons, deer and bear he only gets about 4 acres of yield. I keep 1 acre out of the lease for my food plot which is split between brassicas and cereal grains.

Nice mark that sounds like a good plan! You might ask/pay him to leave about 3/4-1 acre of the standing corn and see how it performs in your area. A lot of folks do that around here, instead of trying to plant them there self they just pay the farmer to leave or work it out b4 hand. Thanks for watching

If you got to aircrow.com they have it as the first thing that shows up. It’s the plot protector pro. There are 2 videos, and right under the videos you can click on view product. That is the same one I have. Or call the number, he will walk you right through the process and answer any questions you might have. Thanks for watching.

One question for the Plot Professor--is it best to do a every other year rotation of corn then soybeans followed by winter wheat in plots the same as a 3 crop farming rotation? Or just see which one works the best and plant the same thing (corn or beans) year after year?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 ай бұрын
Yes that is the best setup you can have crop rotation, corn can utilize the leftover nitrogen that the soybeans made, and crop diseases don’t play nearly as big of a role in that environment. However if there is a clear winner between corn and soybean, your hunting is way better with one than the other, then I plant the same thing every year, and I pick varieties that can handle the environment. Better disease resistant, etc. thanks for watching

Wes really like your channel. I’m really intrigued by the video you did of the broadcast corn/ soybean mix, are you against that method now? I have a 1.75 acre plot in southern IN I’d like to try it on. What would you recommend for pounds of corn seed on that size plot? Deer density isn’t super high. Thanks

Tim, I really appreciate the support and I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel! No im not against it, I just think it’s difficult to get the best of both worlds, high quality summer food and a high quality fall/winter plot. On broadcast corn I shoot for around 30,000 seeds per acre. You will have to do the math on your seed corn, on seeds per LB and break it down from there. The seeds per LB will be on the bag but can vary widely from bag to bag. Hope all that makes sense! Thanks for watching

What is your thought on a 50-50 mix of corn and beans in a small 2.2acre food plot,
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 ай бұрын
I think it sounds really good on paper but in reality the corn gets so big it shades the soybeans out. I’ve planted them together many times and got a good stand but in my opinion you’re better off picking or the other or having a large enough plot where you can effectively plant both. If your corn is thin enough your beans are going to do well, then you won’t hardly have any corn to speak off and vice versa. Thanks for watching

Wes, do you ever have problems with hogs in your area? I feel if I plant corn, the hogs will push them down and wipe out the entire 2 acres.

I do not have any hogs in my area, I’ve heard they are a couple counties away but so far zero sightings. What have you been planting that they aren’t rooting or knocking over?

Do you have a suggestion for planting pasture ( 45 acres ) for cattle, but that is also beneficial for whitetail, In South Alabama?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 ай бұрын
That’s a great question, and I’m not a cattle expert by any stretch of the imagination . We don’t have many in my neck of the woods, and in school I was always on the plant side instead of the animal side. I can’t think of anything that would be real beneficial to both….a clover/grass mix is fairly standard around here and you do see deer and turkey out eating in the pasture. Sorry I couldn’t help more! Thanks for watching

I never see you plant chicory. Is there a reason you don’t? I planted 2 acres of chicory last year in April and had tonnage and deer all over it through the end of December

I have just never had a spot for it, I’ve got so many plots spread across the 1800 acres that I get with the plots that I’ve had the most success with and stick to them. I do try to have some new experiment plots every year, but haven’t found a spot for chicory yet. Thanks for watching.
