James Gunn loves two things. Michael Rooker and chains. In this video we look at what two musical choices in two James Gunn movies can tell us about why he loves characters who are "chained".

I know James Gunn specified “The Chain” and “Brandy” as the two most important songs in the movie (and they are), but I agree that Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son” (which plays during Yondu’s funeral) is almost as important

My dad had died a month before this movie came out. I worked at a drive in theater and was watching it in the golf cart behind the other cars. My dad loved this song and used to tell me "I hope this song doesn't describe our relationship. I want you to be able to speak with me and I want us to be on the same page." He was so worried about us coming apart one day. I always reassured him that we're great, nothings going to happen. This song started playing and I started bawling. I had constant chills for the rest of the movie.

If I had a nickel for every time James Gunn used a chain-related song in a superhero movie, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Can’t tell how many times I’ve had goosebumps everytime I watch the second Chain scene. How the music builds up slowly as Quill musters up the strength to break free of Ego’s shackles. The sands swirling around him and his uttering that seemingly childlike line about Ego squishing his walkman, his last physical reminder of his mom. Great scene

I am obsessed with Gunn's comic book work... he gives such nuance to his characters. His stories are so character driven and he does it seamlessly. You fall in love with these characters within minutes and Gunn has mastered that. Also his musical choices are some of the best in pop culture media. I'm definitely going to make one of these!! Nando with another banger... TYPICAL!

The Suicide Squad (2021) is potentially DC's best film, so fresh and creative and FUN, with a plot that has something to say if you examine it beyond those fun things. It's such a shame it was an early COVID reopening sacrifice. Gunn is the only director who's comic work I'm always interested in these days.

For me, Vol.2 means a lot. My biological dad and i split up because of my parents' divorce 12 years ago when i was 8 years old. That's why the final fight between Ego and Peter hits home a lot. The Chain perfectly describes what happened between us. Meanwhile my step-dad was always there for me. He didn't have any kids of his own, never wanted them. But the amount of love he showed me and being more of a father figure for me than my actual dad is what i feel like happens in the movie with Yondu and Ego. What i'm trying to say, GotG Vol.2 (for me) is almost a perfect description of what happened in my life and i'm gratefull for this movie. Also, great video. Much love from the Netherlands!👌

I was re-listening to Rumours again (because it is one of the best albums ever of course) and I am very glad that you chose this scene to talk about. EDIT: On another note, the leaked trailer for GOTG Vol. 3 having one of the sweetest, most pure and even most heartbreaking songs ever recorded in the history of music just goes to show how incredible Gunn is when setting a tone for one of his films. As much as I will inevitably love Vol. 3, I cannot wait for the soundtrack that he picks for Star-Lord's Zune.

I remember suggesting "The Chain" to James Gunn in one of his Facebook posts not long after the first Guardians movie came out, along with "Push Push Lady Lightning" by Bang Camaro. I don't know if it's a coincidence or he actually saw my post, but he's gone on to use both tracks in his work as "Lady Lightning" plays over the credits to an episode of Peacemaker.

The Chain (Fleetwood Mac) is one of the greatest songs of all time. I listen to a lot of music, from pop to blues to deathcore (I hate ska, though), but no matter what mood I'm in, if The Chain comes on, I'm not changing it. Not only does it have Stevie Nicks, which automatically makes it a banger, it is home to the greatest bass line/riff of all time. Every time I pick up a bass guitar, it's my go-to riff (I'm mostly a guitarist/producer, but dabble in bass, drums, and keyboards). That's a bit of a tangent and hardly related to the video, I just had to comment on how great the song is. Fleetwood Mac is probably my favourite band from the seventies. Probably.
@TidalShadow

Is Rumors the greatest breakup album of all time? Probably, but mostly because of something that is rare in most bands. Three singer/songwriters (and two sets of exes). That meant that each member of the band had a direct part in a breakup song written by their ex. It just hits different.
