It's not exactly a "separate" immune system. Your eyes (and the seminary vesicles actually) are considered immune privileged. This means that you minimise the amount of white blood cells in the area because it would affect functioning, so these areas develop in-utero and are then closed off while the rest of the body develops. If someone has a vasectomy or they have a penetrating injury to the eye balls, parts of that tissue enters your regular blood stream. You immune system then has cells trace them back to the origin and attacks the eyes or the leftover sperm in the balls. The more you know!

One thing I wish I didn't know was that general anaesthetic (propofol) wasn't invented until the 1970s. Before then, the best they could do was wipe your memory with ketanine etc. People were fully awake and screaming/writhing in pain for stuff (such as child birth) but be on massive doses of drugs so they wouldn't remember when they sobered up.... but would the trauma be there subconsciously?
