Former Texas Police Officers Josh and Bill try to to mend a broken heart in this episode of The Rookie!
Ask us questions on our livestreams every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30pm CST right here on this channel.
"Plain Clothes Day" is the fourteenth episode of the first season on The Rookie. This is fourteenth episode of the series overall.
The rookies are really put to the test when their training officers accompany them out of uniform for Plain Clothes Day, which forces the rookies to make all the decisions while on patrol. Meanwhile, Officer Nolan tries to prove he has been progressing faster than the other rookies to promote his desire of becoming a detective within five years.
The Rookie is an American police procedural crime drama television series created for ABC by Alexi Hawley. The series follows John Nolan, a man in his forties, who becomes the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. The series is based on real-life Los Angeles Police Department officer William Norcross, who moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and joined the department in his mid-40s.
The series stars Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Mercedes Mason, Melissa O'Neil, Afton Williamson, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore and Eric Winter.

Something I will never understand is, LAPD is very clear how to report a shooting on radio. "7 Adams 18, shots fired, officers need help." Then give the location. You don't call backup code 3, that is very redundant sometimes they will also verbally request an Airship and a sergeant which is also redundant In the episode where officer Bradford is shot, the first season, Lucy Chen puts out the call exactly how it is supposed to be. Then she adds "please send help right away" No real life rookie would make that mistake.

For the peeping tom scene, I cant remember the case, but I'm pretty positive there is legal precident for headlong flight at the sight of police being PC for at least detainment, even with no other indication of a crime yet occuring. Dude clearly looked at her when she sounded her siren, and the proceeded to run when he was previously stationary before he became aware of police presence, so I think it could be articulated against any claim of impromptu cardio. And between the siren/lights and her calling over the PA for him to stop while he continued to flee, she should have resisting pretty easy. That being said, I get the feeling door checking isnt a part of the standard LAPD use of force matrix 😂

I totally get the detainment portion to at least get the details of whether or not it would fit the elements of the offense. I don't know that unprovoked flight would be enough, but I always errored on the side of "if it's too big of a stretch, you don't have it"

@@OnlyCops that would be awesome, it’s a pretty underrated and lesser known show but still very good! It’d be cool to hear insight on how realistic or fake a lot of the cases are. One thing I should mention. Each season covers multiple cases as they develop simultaneously and it’s not like law and order or something where they find the bad guy by the end of an episode. It shows a lot of actual detective work (with some nonsensical action sprinkled in to keep it entertaining).

I have a suggestion for some videos if you're looking for new ideas: I think it maybe very interesting if you could react to some documentaries about police work in other countries? I was really surprised when you said that they don't use "enough" deadly force on the show bc I always thought they used such a completely unrealistic hollywood-action-show amount of force... Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the show, I'm just really fascinated by how much of it you deem to be realistic or even too "soft" in it's betrayal (can't think of a better word)... And now hearing you say that they should have used deadly force earlier really surprised me, so I did a quick google search. According to the statistic I found "our" police force here in Germany of around 280 000 officers shot 62 bullets, killing 15 people in 2019 (=newest number available bc they publish it only after all cases are closed, trials etc. are over). Now I couldn't find the right numbers to compare this too in the 3 minutes I spent googeling this but I did find a statistic saying that 999 people were shot dead by police officers in 2019. Now obviously the US has 4 times the population so the equivalent in Germany would be 60 people, but that still means that the German police shot only 6% as many people as were shot by US police officers! This isn't to hate on US cops or make it an us vs. you debate or anything and definitely not to be like "we are better" or so. I'm a big believer in most differences in behavior being due to systemic differences and not anything having to do with individual, bc I think ppl overall are basically the same everywhere with only cultural practices and the systems we grow up in making us different. I definitely don't believe in ppl being "better" or "worse" somewhere bc that's just lazily making issues about individuals rather than looking at the complexe interactions between humans and their environment. But I think it's always helpful to compare the "results" of those environments to see how we all can improve on ours to get more of the results we desire. And I think keeping the peace with minimal force, especially minimal deadly force should be a desired outcome. So that just leads me to wondering differs so much in the way the police operates/are trained/ in different countries or what else is different in the environment they operate in, that lead to such different use of force? The different guns laws certainly come to mind. It must be so different to basically have to fear for your life during every traffic stop you perform. (Before people come at me, yes very very "bad guys", as in organized crime do have guns here as well, but the average person just doesn't. Guns are something I see in movies, not in daily life. It's so unrealistic for someone to have a gun that even in movies, if the character is required to have a gun they make them so ridiculous things, like rob a police officer or be some sort of computer genius who can get things through dubious contacts on the dark web and if someone pulled a gun at me in real life I would probably just die bc I'd never believe it was a real gun unless they actually shot me). And Germany is by no means the country with the least shots fired or people killed btw. I'm just using this as an example bc it's my lived experience. But any reactions to documentaries about police work in any country in Europe or elsewhere would be really interesting. Anyway. Stumbled upon your channel just recently and am already huge fan! Your reactions are so interesting bc you give actual insight and add to the content you're watching. Really cool!
@OnlyCops

This would definitely be something we could do! America, having the unique issues with both organized crime, the proliferation of firearms, and a wild media/political system that has caused a lot of division in this country, has in its biggest cities a pretty violent crime issue. In the city I worked in during 2020, there wasn't a single officer I knew that was assaulted in some way shape or form at least once a week for a whole year. I'm not sure if it's cultural or if our diverse population is just finally coming to a cross roads, but we definitely have a violence issue here in the US, especially when you get to the poorer areas. Our media (both news and movies) tend to romanticize criminals and has created a culture where they often try to justify criminal behavior. I doubt there are too many examples of robbers, domestic abusers, or gang members being the "good guys" in non American media. It's been established now in every mainstream media source in thr US for decades now. The side effect of this is when police get assaulted or killed it's celebrated within certain subcultures. It's even promoted openly without issue. But when a bank robber assaults or even kills someone they are "in the wrong place in the wrong time" or and the behavior is treated as an "unfortunate set of circumstances". When presented a deadly threat (in and police department around the world) it is legal to meet that threat with deadly force. I would be impressed if you could find a police officer anywhere globally that would disagree. The Rookie too often shows lesser means of force being both usable and effective without great risk or cost to the officers or the public. The goal should always be to ensure the safety of everyone in any police interaction. However, once someone stops valuing the safety of others (using a gun or other weapon for violence) I don't think it's wise not to utilize at the very least the threat of lethal force. The consequences of not doing so could be the loss of innocent bystanders or the officers themselves. Thank you so much for this great comment and conversation 😊 We are honored to have such an international audience 😁 Please continue to ask questions!

Not sure the theory of where the police are is where crime doesn't happen always works. You say it's not realistic to not leverage deadly force. But unarmed police forces all around the world manage it every day.

American officers arrest people without pulling their guns all the time, the issue I have is them tasing people who have guns in their hands or OCing a dude with a knife. Even in European PDs you would avoid approaching such an armed person without the lethal option officer on their way.
