READ THIS: Something that I only understood after the video is that the main reason the doubler spreads things this particular way is that the extra 2 doubler voices are actually the L and R channel respectively, which is the main reason why things feel wider. The left signal is being put on the right with a delay and vice versa. This creates ''stereo swapped'' delays or two inverted echos, which make the violins bounce on the right, and basses bounce on the left. The further something is to one side, the further it will bounce on the other side.

so it is applying a form of ADT to each channel?

This is awesome in stereo, HOWEVER adding delay will cause comb filtering when listening in mono and if you are not careful it will destroy your mix. You shoud check your mix in mono and adjust the delay time to minimize comb filtering. Thank you so much for this incredible tip!

The more I watch your videos the more I understand. Like today I nearly understood a thing. In like 30 years I'll be a mixer. 😂

Yeah I've been doing something very similar with delays for strings too! One of the big benefits I found is that it makes everything feel more cohesive, like they really are in the same room. Because I think violins 1 can sounded too panned with samples, if you're trying to copy proper film scores. But if the delay feeds some of the signal to the other side, where the cellos and trombones are, it makes them feel more together. You can do this with a lot of sampled instruments. A lot of film scores feel more panned because they were recorded in the same room and each mic is picking up the other instruments very subtly, so they can be more full on with panning. But the delay helps it stay cohesive and have a live feel.

Totally, I love doing this nowdays. Maybe it's somewhat simulating some "spill" yeah.

This is similar to what Alan Meyerson does with the Kramer tape but instead the effect is in stereo and it sorta works like er cause of the inverted channels. Something like a controlled slap delay, gotta try it. Might be specially useful for chamber/solo libraries! Thanks for the ideas haha

Yeah, I got it wrong in the stream actually, it's the longest delay that should be on the right haha :D

Hi! It's an useful way to get Haas effect "alla" Meyerson! ;)It can be inserted on every string's section more balanced to right or left like violins and celli or you get best results through inserting it in the strings bus?

Excellent tip! Would you recommend this on brass too like the horns so they can fill the space more? Also for not using Patcher you just use a Send to an Aux with Doubler and that would achieve the same thing correct?
4 жыл бұрын
I think it would work on the brass too, although I use something else to add ER on brass. And yes that would achieve the same thing, just make sure the delay send is also sending to the strings reverb the same amount as the strings bus is sending to the strings reverb. Just putting it as an insert and rising the side voices might be simpler.

Awesome tip, thanks! Since no filtering/mod/detuning is going on, would it be possible to just enable the dry channel and mix in the 1 and 2 inside the plugin, instead of patching it in parallell in DAW?
4 жыл бұрын
Cool! Yeah, same thing. I just don't want to select both the left and right at the same time to adjust the effect.

@ Didn't think of that, that would actually be a little quirky. Do you happen to know of a similar patching plugin for Logic?

How could that be handled in cubase?

Just put the doubler as an insert, keep the middle voice and raise the extra delays until you hear the effect ;)

So it's basically a slight chorus effect, since the double effect is chorus...
4 жыл бұрын
Kind of but there's no detuning so no chorus. This is more like a panned stereo slap delay that puts the left side on the right and vice versa.
