It's not that they don't use green screens, but they tend to use them minimally. They build a lot of sets that are very complex. The wings are CGI, but there is usually not a lot of that. However when you get to "Idol" you will see what I believe is the maximum use of green screen in their videos so far.

It's really not true that they NEVER use green screen, but they don't use it unless it's called for in the concept. If they can use a set or illusion, they will do that first. I just wanted to clarify that. Also, Jimin's wings are CGI. BTS Music Videos are always very well done, and their video production team are top notch. By the way, Jimin played the shadow for Suga and JK, and J Hope played RM's shadow. and it wasn't green screen at the end when the shadow descended back into the darkness. I will leave you the behind the scenes, because it seems like you are really into it. Black Swan shooting sketch w/Eng subs - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrd4ZK-ipr2ZdoU.html Also, since you love contemporary dance, and you paused in the middle of Jimin's dance solo, you have to watch the behind scenes because it's amazing. Jimin is representing the black swan, and he is a very talented contemporary dancer. They also have a very talented team of back up dancers. Jimin solo black swan behind the scenes - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrOWo5WbyLGZYoE.html I think you are really understanding the reason that ARMY loves BTS so much. According to the description of “Black Swan” on Melon, Martha Graham’s quote was the inspiration for the song. “Black Swan” tells the story of a dancer, an artist, who fears the death of their career: the moment when they can no longer perform on stage. The moment when music no longer touches the artist's hearts or stirs their passion is the moment when the specter of that “first death” appears. Martha Graham quote: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” The music vedio also represents Jung's concept of the shadow, since your shadow includes your deep seated fears . They are afraid to lose their passion for music , and the shadow behind Suga at the beginning is huge and has a life of it's own. Then at the end of the song fhey have faced their fear and the shadow loses it's power over them and Jungkook's shadow at the end of the vedio shrinks and disappears.

I want to mention that when you go back and watch Jimin dance early on with this group, they were packaged more as a hip hop group and he was phenomenal! But when they let him be himself through his dance, he became a happier jimin, and has just blossomed! And remember... He came to this group as a dancer but not as a singer! He has worked so hard on his singing and his voice is exceptional and an important part of this group as well as his dance! (I could make a comment very similar about everyone of these young men! They all brought something to the table but we're lacking in another area. These are some of the hardest working young men you'll ever find!)

The way Jeff did this was great - he watched the visuals and listened to the song first, without looking at lyrics. Then went back to read the lyrics afterwards with a second watch. This is a really good way to do it, I recommend doing this going forward. People tend to miss visuals when they have to worry about reading lyrics at the same time, and vice versa. No need to struggle to see and hear everything all at one time, splitting it up like Jeff did is good. Perhaps it would be a good way for Olive to react too. I really love the excitement, appreciation and enthusiasm Jeff has, this was an awesome reaction. He already loves it haha, Black Swan was a perfect choice for him. Such a knowledgeable and perceptive reactor too, love that. I would love to see his wife's reactions too, maybe she can come in as a guest appearance sometimes 😆. Both of them would probably love the MN Dance Art Film for Black Swan too. Yes, definitely show them the dance practice videos please! You could format their reactions like this: music vid + behind-the-scenes/making-of together in 1 reaction video. Then dance practice video + a live performance in 1 reaction video. Doesn't matter how long the videos get haha. Be sure to tell Olive too that she can rewind/pause however many times she wants, so there's no more confusion on this 😆 Also, perhaps Olive has expressed more interest in their personalities over the music because she hasn't heard anything she likes yet? Or maybe she feels there might not be much in their discography that she will like? I would still try exposing her to more of the music and dance first. I think once she starts to find songs she really likes, there will be more interest to explore that. Actually a lot of people find they end up liking a lot of BTS songs that don't fit their preferred genres. Like a lot of people don't like rap, but they love BTS's rap stuff. And for me, I don't really like pop ballads, but JK's song Stay Alive unexpectedly made it's way into my top 10 BTS songs. And I don't even give spots in my top 10 to solo songs very easily 😭. So Olive may be surprised at how much of their music she ends up liking.

This song says, “The dancer dies twice. The first death is when the dancer stops dancing. And this death is much more painful,” the legendary contemporary dancer Martha Graham made its motif. Just as a dancer faces his first death when he quits dancing, it contains the fear of the moment when he will no longer be able to stand on the stage as an artist. "The more I do music, the more I fear that music will no longer give me a lot of emotion or trembling, but the moment I face my inner 'Black Swan' from the depths of my heart, I paradoxically realize that there is only music." [Suga] Ayy, they say my heart is not beating no more listening to music Tryna pull up Time seems to have stopped Oh that would be my first death I been always afraid of [RM] If this makes me cry no more If you can't make my heart tremble more How could I ever die like this But what if that moment’s right now right now Ps:Black Swan is my favorite song. When I had to end my 25-year career as a contemporary dancer, I felt the same way, and this song comforted me.

What i love abt this song is that most singers nowadays don’t talk about losing their passion that often. This song dives deep into the group's fears as artists. BTS contends that the day that music no longer fills them with the same passionate fire as before, or even if there came a day when they stopped creating music - what they feel is their life's purpose - it would feel like death.

Black Swan was written by RM after being inspired by the quote "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and their first death is the more painful" ...here BTS talks about their fear of losing their passion for their art..and if that day comes then it will be their first death....RM was afraid that what if that moment is already here (hence the lyrics but what if the moment's right now, right now). With Suga's second verse, the song starts getting a little bit positive with them saying that no matter what we will never forget out art, we will rise (with our shadows) even in times like those because music is the driving force for them. They also have another MV for this song "Black Swan art film" (it is the orchestral version of the song) where you'll see MN dance studio representing a swan and its shadow....the swan first tries to break free from its shadow but ends up accepting it and rising up with its help....this also represents the concept BTS went for with their album Map of the Soul: 7 which talks about a persons persona, shadow and ego (Black Swan is a pre-release single from this album)

This song is correlated to the ballet & movie "Black Swan" which talks about the two sides of artistry. When an artist reach his pinnacle of fame,(white swan) what is his next move? Alongside, there is the shadow represented by the struggles, doubts, fears (black side) as a person or artist. Thus, BTS outfits here are light and dark. Also the lighting, production, choreo etc are cohesily done. Fun Fact: one of Black Swan composers is Filipino-Canadian songwriter August Rigo. 👏👏👏

I’m a Silver-White Army of 70 yo. from Pearl City HI. living in Eugene OR, and have been ARMY Since the beginning. I was a diehard K- drama fan since 2005. And through the dramas I was introduced to the Korean Hallyu Wave, seeing the Hip Hop BTS in 2013, not impressed at the time until 2016 as I enjoyed ‘V’s’ performance in his Debut Sega ‘Hwarang,’ with fellow KPop actors, Shinee Minho and Zea’s Hyunshik. TAYLOR you’ve done a wonderful and precise video. I’ve watched it so many many times with other reaction channels. Your hard work has brought so much understanding and awe for the Boys. Your presentation of facts really brought in more recruits to the BTS ARMY. I sure Hope you received an Award for your hard Work just based on the number of views. I congratulate you. I just love your professional reaction to this video… the way you look at the way it was filmed and directed with a layer of nuance and respect for the song it self and BTS. You talk about contemporary dance, and the inspiration behind this song is Martha Grahams (doyen of contemporary dance) quote: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing and this first death is more painful” It is by design it was filmed in a theatre… and the black / white is used…to give more weight to the song. Jimins dance skills in contemporary was exceptional here and he has performed full solos to this at other streamed events.. this is also THE ONLY DANCE they have performed bare foot… again , no easy feat for non contemporary trained dancers.. with the softer arm movements… which ONLY BTS I feel can pull off. My take is with the deeper meaning behind the song of the fear of losing their passion for music, BTS are unparalleled in their ability to emote through the song, music, lyrics and visual MV .. this song actually made me ARMY.. I really enjoy your reactions as it does feel like when I first started.. with just another KPOP group , then slowly converted into these boys are mega talented and so refreshingly honest ..in their music and personalities! Happy rabbit hole ! 😆😆😍

Jeff mentioning why modern started and its relation to contemporary is fitting considering the Black swan story Jimin's character is playing is meant to be a dancer who starts out pure and in love with dancing and gets swallowed up by the requirements of perfection and loses their passion in pursuit of the demands the industry places on them and to survive as a dancer. The "black" outfits symbolize the more passionate, free inner dancer inside them who wants to just dance and feel the art with no other constraints. But that free part is shown as a shadow because it has to be restrained and eventually "dies" (Jimin collapses and the shadow disappears). The dancer dying their first death.

All interior shots are real. It was filmed at the Los Angeles Theatre. An employee who helped prepare the set described on social media how she crawled around the stage for hours checking for raised nails that could hurt their bare feet and got a smile from Jimin. Directed by Choi Yong Seok of Lumpens who has done some of their most incredible MVs. He's a complete genius. Definitely a name to watch for in the future. There were rumors that the CGI wings were done by a firm famous for a working on certain action movie franchise, but I can't find a source.

I'm so glad you watched this MV. Since you have such an appreciation for dance, you should also watch the Black Swan Art Film music video, which offers a different take on the sound, dance and set. It's performed by a professional dance company and was actually released a month before the official MV--so the art film was how BTS chose to debut this song to the world. Another reason why I love them!

Thank you for your fantastic reaction, Jeff! I'm sure Taylor told you their producer's called Lumpens. Award-winning (clearly, right?) and has been with BTS for a long time. I was trained in ballet as a girl, and I totally know what you're talking about there. (My dance school was progressive and promoted healthy dancers.) The blend of this lyrical content, with the visual style, with the connection to modern dance & Martha Graham is very organic AND very smart. It's so powerful that, when this song debuted, it both shocked me and made me weep. I hope you and your wife get to see BTS' Black Swan Art Film, which was how they chose to debut the song to the world instead of a MV. P.S. I don't mean to sound rude at all. But sometimes, people don't know what they're talking about, and they spread rumors... "BTS doesn't use green screen or CGI" is a silly comment. Anyone in the industry knows those are not "bad" things, and you can still be impressive by relying on practical effects while using digital effects to enhance the production. I'm starting to get annoyed 😬 Sorry. But my point was to take comments with a grain of salt.

They didn't use green screen in this, and there are definitely instances where people *think* it is green screen or cgi when it is actually practical effects, but they definitely also have music videos that make a great deal of use of both green screen and cgi. I think it's worth a mention that they do the same group choreography (and some of the solo choreography) when they perform their songs live on stage. It's a hallmark of the k-pop system groups that the artists aren't *just* singers with backup dancers. The artists themselves - the idols - are trained in singing and dancing, and are expected to perform in both capacities after their debut. You should definitely watch some of their dance practices. Those show their uncut stage choreography, which you don't really get a good idea of the intensity or complexity of from their MVs. And they do some really cool things in their stage choreo that mimic effects done with props and camera work in the videos. I'd also recommend Jimin's behind the scenes for his solo dance for this video, which is in the form of a "Bangtan Bomb" video (I'm sure Taylor knows where to find it).

How did they execute this? Most all MV's have Behind the Scenes. They filmed Jimin performing the shadow dance. Then edited in the front pic of Suga rapping. Or the other way around. Otherwise you would see Suga's shadow too and ruin the effect. There is a whole video of filming just Jimin and his rehearsal and solo dance part. There Are special effects. That's a rumor...no green screens or special effects. Sometimes they do use green screens. You can see the green screens in their Behind the Scenes. But it's true. They don't use them a lot.

bts do not use green screen 99% of the time, they only used it twice to my knowledge - for their idol music video, because the point was for it to be wild and whimsical and they couldn't fully replicate that in real life, and partially for their dynamite music video, because the weather in korea was really bad and they couldn't film outside.

Nice to see someone really taking it in and trying to understand this masterpiece from various perspectives. Can't wait for him to get to Blood Sweat and Tears MV. Also the dance practice - the way the choreo covered the floor from one end to the other is a wonder to watch. Black Swan, refers to the internal struggle of a person who is so involved in doing what he is most passionate about and how little by little the pleasure he had for doing it fades. They represent the nightmare and the fear of feeling dead in life, without passion or motivation. At the same time Black Swan represents hope and inner strength to hold on to what one day made us feel alive and realize that we and our shadows from the past can be our own enemy. they also took the phrase “A dancer dies twice. One when he stops dancing, and this first death is the most painful of all” said by Martha Graham It should also be noted that Jimin, one of the boys from BTS, studied contemporary dance.

It is not true that BTS and their crew don't use green screen. They absolutely use green screen. I'm not sure when fans started bragging about not using green screen as if its a bad thing, but they most definitely do and in the most tasteful and experimental way. However, their choice to use built sets or practical effects when it could've been CGI is part of what makes their music videos so impressive.

Thanks for this reaction.:) Black Swan is a song that expresses their fear of losing their passion for music. BTS members said they felt scared and pressured because they suddenly became world famous around 2018. So they were thinking about disbanding, and nevertheless, after a year of hard time thinking, they decided to think only about their fans and themselves and move forward. The albums that have been released since then are the Map of the Soul series. The albums are filled with songs that reconsider their inner self, the relationship between the seven members, and the relationship between them and fans. Boy with Luv contains a message that they will fly toward fans, not the sun, with wings attached by ARMY. And after listening to Black Swan, you can better understand how they feel by reading On's lyrics. I highly recommend On kinetic manifesto film after Black Swan. :)

As you probably already know, BTS has 7 members.... they are a very close "family" and totally genuine. The group has 3 rappers (RM, J-hope, & SUGA {aka Agust D} and 4 vocalists (Jungkook, Jin, V, & Jimin). The best way to get absorb each member's style is to dive into their solos, as well as the Rapline & Vocal line performances. Here are some suggestions. While some have MV'S, some are even better live (be sure to find ones that have subtitles cc's) RM : Change ft. WALE mv ; Joke ; Seoul J-HOPE : Airplane mv ; Outro:Ego mv ; Chicken Noodle Soup mv; HEY MAMA live performance (amazing!!!) Suga : Agust D self-titled mv ; Daechwita mv ; Interlude:Shadow mv RAPLINE : Outro:Tear live at Wembley ; Ddaeng live w/ eng sub ; DDaeng live w/ end sub Jungkook : Euphoria live ; My Time live D2 on BTS LIVE 2; Begin live Jin : Epiphany live ; AWAKE live ; Moon live V : Singularity mv ; Stigma live ; Inner Child live Jimin : Serendipity live stage mix ; LIE live stage mix ; FILTER live Vocal Line: The Truth Unknown live ; House of Cards live ; Lost Live stage mix ; Dimple live stage mix Just for fun check out their "Ma City" live when they all just broke loose and also have the band GHOST backing them up onstage. One of my personal favorite live performances.

Black swan is a masterpiece 😍 yesss please watch the dance practices they show all the juicy bits you miss and you really get to admire the skill and formations and levels even more. I’m so happy you showed him Black Swan first, good job ARMY ❤️ Agreed, Film Noir is wonderful! I didn’t know it was inspired by German expressionism?! That’s cool I’ll have to go look up German expressionism now! Your wife would LOVE Jimin! (The one with blue hair in the video) He was top of his class at Busan School of Arts doing Modern Dance and one of his teachers was apparently upset when he wanted to leave to become an idol saying that it was a huge loss to the world of contemporary dance, but look at him now! He brought contemporary to being an idol, he’s one of the best and certainly most unique dancers in the kpop industry because of his contemporary training. It’s dope. Also, I love reactions from a filmmaker perspective. I’m a dancer and I used to be a professional costume constructor and makeup artist, so I can go on for days about those aspects of BTS but, while I LOVE film and television, I knew nothing about film making or the power of lighting until I started watching BTS reactions with film makers! So I really enjoy this because it makes me appreciate, love, feel, and interpret the videos/performances differently in a way that really excites me, and bleeds out into other things I watch as well, I appreciate so much more the things I watch because of people like you
