Then you know we had on hard hats in the hole, you know we used a tripod to pull buckets, and lowered a ladder onto the hole via rope to climb in and out avoiding the walls. We also had two people monitoring what was going on at all time’s someone was in the hole. It was done correctly and as safely as possible while still being able to retrieve the bottles that were discarded when the privy was built. Thanks for your continued support and concern brother.

I wonder if the people back then felt that dumping a layer of bottles would limit odor coming off of it or if it was purely a matter of convenience to use it as a bottle dump when it was going into disuse. Any insights been gained from asking the local old timers? Might be worth asking around! And they might appreciate an old bottle as a gift... surely one of them will feel specially meaningful to them as they are seeing them. Maybe there could be a set put aside for gifts or "thank yous"... just seems like a nice way to include others and gain local knowledge at the same time!

Those privies are deep along the Ohio River. I've dug several 14 footers in Cinci and my buddies have dug 40 footers. All the privies I've dug in Dayton average 6 to 10 feet deep. Making me want to get out and probe, especially since the creeks stay up and muddy....

I dug down an old hillside dirt privvy down to at least 30 feet. First thought it was a water well, but not overhead water winch, well bricks, ... but no discovery of anything of glassware when digging down 10 feet - so not sure if anything could have been found for this 1890s-1940s shack house residency. Never did hit any water level, so more-than-likely it was the privvy.

******** SCARCE - RARE ******* I have never seen that version of a Ball (capital letters vs Ball signature) Perfect Mason. There is a period when Ball used BALL in capital letters (1895-1896) in an arched lettering, but the Perfect series is said to be (1913-1922) with the same neck ring. This is aqua and said to have stopped making aqua in 1937 - a non-issue. The oldest origin of the horizontal and straight-upright lettering of the Ball signature underline are the same (1895-1896) period. Some of the many Ball signature underline Perfects (1913-1922) are mis-spelled with all kinds of Perfect switched letters on the jars. To me, this says, that there were many different molds, and glassmaking plants doing all kinds of screwed up production models, testings, and conversion modelling. It is one thing to be all capital letters, but this jar has STAGGERED RIGHT LETTERING. All Perfects are perfect horizontal and underneath each line. That is what directly hit me upon seeing it. I have never seen any staggered lettering on any datable Ball jars. This is machine made, smooth lip like other pictures of the same straight alignment of letters. I have asked a Ball collectors home page to look at the vid photos of the jar and make a statement. As said, I haven't seen this design anywhere in 50+ years of collecting - and I consider it scarce - beyond rare - until someone shows me some internet photos that I haven't seen anywhere with dating a Ball jar and its variations like this lettering - but also the staggering. And there appears to have also been a previous mold of somebodies, rewelded and then embossed again with new lettering. AND !!! I know of no other fruit jar, in any way, that ever had any staggered lettering !!!! So what this mold was prior to having the BALL embedded in, then changing the PERFECT ... AND the MASON is like looking at a Ball 1908 (but not being staggered) and being changed into a BALL PERFECT MASON To me, this is a machine (quasi 1896-1913) prototype jar as an early Perfect Mason, and the conversions of the old arched BALL letters at a specific number of plants, before the Ball signature Perfect jars came out parallel production in 1913. and eventually all plants converted into the Ball signature jars thereafter. Also the other Ball jars Improved, 1908, etc would all be converted, and this appears to be the last modelling that then just was blown by all of the many different Special, Perfect, et al variants. So this jar could be after Ball 1908 thus (1908ish-1913) and an early prototype Perfect mason for the final mold modelling series (1913-1922). So having these characteristic it is scarce: (1) capital lettering, (2) earlier than (1913-1922) models, (3) parallel productions of the BALL and Ball signature models, and (4) MOST ESPECIALLY the staggered lettering and the appearance of being a previous model (and mucked up mold by some mold embosser - that another person just half-assed corrected it as such - leaving the staggered and misaligned lettering. You would think someone could see a mold and notice they were not making a perfect lettering alignment !!! With all of the known various acquistions (and shenanigan forced buyouts) of other glassmaking and fruit jar companies by the Ball Brothers, to me ... this shows that there were (at least) 2 different operations and centers of productions for the capital lettered Ball Perfect Masons, and the Ball signature underline Perfect Masons. There are the older jar making plants (i.e. BALL) and newer jar making plants (i.e. Ball signature underline). It would be good to see where these individuall jars were made, and then the possible closing down of these older Ball jars for the newer glassmaking plants and the Ball signature underlines. But definitely 1913 was a turning point of conversions for Ball fruit jars in having the signature jars thereafter. So this could be some other contracted fruit jar glassmakers, just like Consolidated Fruit Jars were contracted out to many, many different glass blowers. So this glassmaker, no wonder they are scarce, wasn't up to the best mold making and embossing, and would have been phased out (!).
