As we prepare our sailboat for the upcoming cruising season into the Mediterranean, we are making our cruising and liveaboard lifestyle much easier and safer. We are installing a new alternator into our boat, setting up and installing Starlink satellite internet and doing some work on our windlass. We are now able release the anchor via a wireless remote switch versus manually letting our our anchor chain by hand!

You guys should strongly consider de masting and doing the canals in France. You would not regret it.

Keeping on the Continental Shelf well clear of the Bay of Biscay influence is also a very nice option to Travel down the west coast of France, with nice places to pop into to wait on Weather Windows, then do the same across the North Spain Coast, and then south along the Coast of Portugal. It's so nice, I don't bother crossing the Bay of Biscay any longer. Yes, it takes more time, but itbis very enjoyable time, even when stuck waiting for better Weather. tbh though, if I hadn't spent so much time in a Motorbike touring the interior of France, I'd probably want to go the Canal route from Nort to the Med in the South, at least once, but I think I'd hire a motor Cruiser to do it on. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Hi!! I'm an Italian sailor. I live in Firenze, Tuscany. What you call as "med mooring" we call it "attraccare di poppa". In a non remote port you frequently find a "trappa" at the dock. Basically once your stern is close to the dock with a half sailor you are going to grab a tiny rope attached at the bollard. If you follow this rope to your bow and take it out of the water you'll find a big rope. You then attach this big rope to a cleet at your bow.

Love the Starlink and I'm sure stoked that its working out for you guys! That's a big deal for sure. Nice to see you both getting excited about getting off that dock and into some warmer waters

The Hunter Centre Cockpit Boats. Big shock for me, as I have hated every Centre Cockpit Boat I have ever Been on, but last month I watched a Review of a Hunter CC, and could tell it was a boat I could live on, sensible Shoal Draft, and enough volume below deck that's open enough to not be little Sauna compartments in hot weather and having to have full air conditioning to cope. Last but definitely not least, no loads of steps vertical companionway to be difficult to avoid skinning and bruising shins an knees on all the time. Very well built and friendly to living aboard Boats imho. A very good find you have there. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

@@SailingJibsea Thanks I will. I almost bought a Hunter when I went to the USA buy a boat. It was a really lovely boat, and the price was right, but I didn't have enough time left on my Visa, to sort out the soft decking areas, before clearing USA Territorial Waters. the boat I did get was a close run thing, and the boatyard had to jump me ahead in the launch schedule, for me to make it with 2 days to spare. It was getting a bit nerve wracking tbh. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob 👍⛵️✨️

@@SailingJibsea Nice boat tour. Clearly a very nice boat, and looking at the specifications for it, it's displacement weight for a 42ft length, to me, just screams excellent construction quality. A brilliant find for your First Sailboat, and a keeper, unless you hit the point of really needing a larger boat- it happens, and bear in mind, I think they made a couple of larger models, and to widen available choice potentially, very nice aft Cockpit models as well. The Bunter I looked at was a 30ft and fine for solo sailing, and a very nice boat, and it's really odd that some people really li,e to hate on Hunter Boats imho, I don't think they can ever have been on one tbh. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️

Sounds like a rumor repeated as truth. They just recently renamed the services with new terms & conditions. Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam. It has two versions, Regional for $150/mo and Global for $200/mo. Currently they're still not enforcing or letting you select which version of Roam but sailors moving between countries now have a version (Roam Global) that we'll be able to use. Specific terms only allow coastal waters (unsure what it will be in practice, probably up to 15mi which is current Starlink cell diameter). The very expensive maritime version is supposedly the only one that will work offshore long term (although many report this is unenforced). The existence of Roam Global gives me confidence that they're not only thinking about RV's.

Hi Travis, On my 1991 passage, I have the capability to raise and lower the chain electrically. While lowering the anchor, someone will still need to be forward keeping an eye on the chain gypsy contact. I have had a situation where the chain came off the gypsy and started to drop freely. It was exactly how you pulled the chain off to freehand your drop. Had to run forward to stop the fall before everything came off. Cant wait to see your modification to fix the drop of the chain into the locker.

The anchor chain management aboard my Hunter 42 (1993 CC Passage) is an inept and unsafe design. Your wireless solution answered one of the most annoying (and single-handed obstructing) problems. I'll dig out the motor to see if she might reverse. If it's a 2-wire job, perhaps it's possible to reverse polarity the motor entirely, which would also solve the problem (provided the motor body isn't grounded!). As illustrated, it appears your windlass motor runs at a lower speed than mine. Speed, and the ability to better control the chain, seems part of the problem. Like you, I was also considering gutting out below the gypsy to solve the chain binding problem. Presently, the chain reverses around the gypsy and requires a hammer and other tools to free it! Try getting a safe stance whilst dealing with this! I am not a fan of placing extremities near strong rotating equipment, yet the physical layout demands it. Thank you both for sharing this important innovation!

I hope you're aware that Starlink is talking about eliminating sailing access from the project. They have a marine version which is STUPID expensive. And they are apparently coming out with a new less expensive version for ocean travellers. But IF you are using the RV variety, that will be going away and only available on land, or extremely close to it. Including blocking access. As described on another Vlogger's channel. I'll find the link and post it. Sailing Doodles - Video titled: "A better Trimaran than Vagabonde's?" ...... 4:00 - 8:00 - he runs through the RV vs Marine vs the new marine version (for smaller vessels). Posted around Mar 26, 2023.

Don't get to use to starlink RV version on the boat. It will be land locked shortly and if you want it on the water you will have to get the maritime version. Rates start at $1000/month data capped at 1Tbyte. Not to mention the small fortune for the hardware. Definitely not ideal for the normal cruiser.
