Over A CENTURY OLD Abandoned Railroad Bridge in Florida Everglades
This video is a tribute to the former Atlantic Coast Line ACL Haines City Brach which went from Haines City to Everglades City that being its Southernmost point, however the CSX Homestead Subdivision did extend further South and currently holds the title for the continental United States of America ! It ran through Lake Wales , Avon Park , Sebring , and Immokalee in addition to the aforementioned cities. In 1910 construction began from H.C. to Sebring. This segment would be complete in June 1912 and served many vegetable , citrus growers and was 47 miles long. In 1916, the Atlantic Coast Line made plans to extend the branch further south to Immokalee. Construction began that year with track reaching the Caloosahatchee River at Ortona by April 1918. This project also included a branch from Harrisburg, just south of Palmdale, to Moore Haven which was completed around the same time. ACL extended the line one last time in 1929 to the Miami Canal in Lake Harbor to connect with the Florida East Coast Railway's Kissimmee Valley Line. A spur south and east to Okeelanta would also be built. The Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line Railroads would merge in 1967, with the merged company being named the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. The Seaboard Coast Line ended up using the former Seaboard Air Line track in the combined network as the main route through the area. The Haines City Branch would then be broken up into smaller branches of the Seaboard line. In 1958, service to Everglades City was discontinued due to diminished traffic and track was removed between there and Copeland. By 1961, track was removed between Copeland and Sunniland. Track was removed between Waverly and Lake Wales, between Frostproof and Avon Park (with a short piece of the line remaining as a spur), and between the Avon Park spur and Sebring (which eliminated the crossing of the two lines). The Seaboard Coast Line would then operate the north end of the line as their Haines City Subdivision from Haines City to Waverly. Track from Lake Wales to Frostproof became part of the Lake Wales Subdivision. Remaining track south of Sebring to Lake Harbor became the Sebring Subdivision, and track from Harrisburg to Immokalee became the Immokalee Subdivision. In 1980, the Seaboard Coast Line's parent company merged with the Chessie System, creating the CSX Corporation. The CSX Corporation initially operated the Chessie and Seaboard Systems separately until 1986, when they were merged into CSX Transportation. By 1982, the company removed track from south of Haines City to Waverly, as well as track from Immokalee to Sunniland. The rest of the Immokalee Branch would be abandoned by the end of the decade.
Despite parts of the Haines City Branch being abandoned, some segments remain in service. At the north end, the line remains within Haines City but is now serves as an industrial spur off of CSX's A Line (the former Atlantic Coast Line main line). The line remains grade separated through downtown Haines City, owing to how busy the line was in its earlier days.
From Lake Wales to Frostproof, the line is still in service and is now operated by the Florida Midland Railroad, a shortline that took over the line in 1987. This segment is now connected to the Auburndale Subdivision via a former Seaboard Air Line track from West Lake Wales to Lake Wales.
The short industrial spur in Avon Park is still in service that now branches off the Auburndale Subdivision (former Seaboard line).
The remaining track from Sebring to Clewiston and Lake Harbor also remains in service. U.S. Sugar, who has historically been a major customer on that part line for its entire history, bought it in 1994 and established its own shortline, the South Central Florida Express, Inc., who continues to operate it today.
State Road 29 continues to run very close to the former right of way between Immokalee and Everglades City. If you ever saw a train here, please comment where and when!

Cool! That long piece of wood that appears to be 12" x 12" x about 6 or 8 feet long that you called a "tie" is called a "cap". This is what goes on top of the pilings whenever a wooden "timber" railroad bridge is installed. The wood that supports the track structure is called "stringers". These are placed on top of the cap that sits on top of the pilings. I've seen two different versions of these wooden pile trestle bridges. There's what's called the "open deck" type, where the "deck" of the bridge is made out of railroad ties that are actually notched slightly. They're notched on the bottom so that the tracks won't shift when the train comes. The rails and tie plates are laid on top of the ties of course. Outside of the main running rails are wooden strips, usually 8' x 4" x 4" that are bolted to the ties with lag screws usually. These are called guard timbers. These help to stabilize the track structure on the trestle and "in theory" prevent the wheels of derailed rail equipment from falling of of the tracks. Many if not most railroad bridges have a pair of rails in the inside of the main running rails called "guard rails" that pretty much serve the same purpose as the guard timbers do. The other type of wooden trestle is the "ballasted deck" type, (less common than the open deck type) and have a closed bridge deck. The tracks are actually ballasted on these structures. These are more common out west and in the south than anywhere else that I've seen them. The Southern Pacific's "Sunset" Route that went through the deserts in New Mexico and Arizona had a lot of these ballasted deck wooden trestles. Since the UP absorbed the Southern Pacific back in 1996, the UP has actually replaced a lot of them with earthen embankments and even some concrete structures.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe my great grandfather was the on site construction supervisor of the construction of this railroad line. The part from the Gulf Coast out across the Everglades was how I imagined but seeing your map it would appear to be that section going do to Everglades City.....it was virgin swamp for sure. He did not pass away until I was about 17 years old and so I grew up hearing his stories about this project. Additional background: Although we have HUGE extended family in Florida, that includes several European & Mediterranean countries, Creek Indian, etc. his part of the family were from England and started farming in North Florida in 1822 (this is all documented as there was a book written but not published). He and my great grandmother were married at (as I recall) ages 14 & 15 and they came down to Sarasota where he helped survey many of the original streets and his brothers actually did all the plastering inside the Ringling Brothers Mansion Homes there. Again, these were all stories within the family growing up. I don't know the dates on the railroad laying but the main parts of the story I recall him sharing was it was hot & humid inhospitable conditions (he was a tracker and hunter on the level of an Indigenous native). There was a large crew, I seem to recall most were back (again, as I recall) and was one of, if not the only white person. They would dig (dredge) up the land on the sides to get above the swamp water level in places, and lay the track as they went. Supplies would be brought by rail carts (track, ties, etc.) as they worked their way across. Also, one of their main foods was large oak barrels filled with salted pork as it could be kept this way without refrigeration. As I recall him saying many times, this was the first railroad tracks forged across the Everglades. He & Great Grandmother later (I believe about 1970) bought the old original Mango Grove on Pine Island and managed that until they passed away and it went into the family. One of the Mango varieties he developed was the "Jay-Byrd", as their last name was Byrd. Perhaps some of this fits with your research. My studies were in Marine Biology and so I still keep up as best I can with the issues involved with watersheds of Florida and still have family there with large Cattle Ranch, Citrus, etc. although I moved west.

When I use to run down to Florida. I would see old abandoned tracks all over. Seeing em hiding in the weeds. Tracks ran all over the place because of citrus groves and sugar cane fields all over down there. But trucking did cut into the rail lines business. In Mississippi there's miles of old abandoned track going to a WWII ammunition plant. Covered up in dirt and Cudzu and weeds. There's a Plastic pellet plant out there. Its by Prairie Mississippi. There's a peanut processor and Westlake chemical. I have been there a few times. Look it up on Google maps. And there's a picture with a WWII era ammunition bunker. I wonder what railroad company served that area. Love the videos man take care and god bless.

WOW Doug, that is quite a lead you gave me there! I will definitely keep in mind if I'm ever up that way. Trucking definitely cut into the rail business. But the funny thing is everything has an expiration date, at first it was the pony express, then railroads, and now trucking. Now they're talking about drones. Who knows what's next?! In peauteau Oklahoma, there was a bridge where the rock island crossed a small river, (it was concrete) and my dad told me that he and his brother would get underneath the bridge while the train was passing and they would see how loud it was, it has since collapsed and all the rails pulled.

To answer your query. The piles&caps look ok for RR. The distance Twix caps should not be more than 12’6””-13’6”. Hard to guess from picture. Open deck stringers from bent to bent would be 8”x16”from 16’-22’ long laid longitudinally on top of caps then bridge ties to support rail!! Anymore questions? T W M

Im mock a lee. U of F has a Research Center there also. ;-) We removed one of the concrete mile post from that branch ( with permission ) and moved it to the neighbor's yard. And it was quite a bit of work getting it stood back up as the milepost was a solid concrete casting. You can see it just to the right of the tree on page 34 of ibls.org/files/Companies/KostersMiniatureRailroadSupplies/Behind_The_Scenes_at_Kosters.pdf It also shows on page 20 sticking up above the loco.

Here are the phases of the railroad. In phase one would be the purchase of the branch and I would be adding and restoring track along the branch. In phase 2-a I'll be purchasing sightings and Spurs from industries and CSX that are no longer used or barely use. That will be all the way from Lakeland to Tampa Union station. And in Lakeland and Eaton Park I will be starting construction on stations and the construction of a tunnel underneath the polk parkway and the construction of two more stations one at highland City and the fourth one at Bartow. And also the installation of a secondary track along the main line to Bartow. In phase 2-b would be the finish of the construction of the stations and I would have a temporarily passenger service that would be a mixed train from Lakeland to Bartow until I get a unit more locomotives. In phase 3 I'll be purchasing track from CSX from Tampa all the way down to St Petersburg and also purchase the bike trail that used to be the second old main Lane into St Petersburg and the addition of overhead wires in the reconstruction of the second main line and the beginning constructions of stations at Tampa, oldsmar, safety harbor, Clearwater, largo, Pinellas Park and St Petersburg. In phase 4 would be the the ending of the construction of the stations and the second main line which I would be turning into a loop and the electric locomotives I will be buying would be 4 DB BR 442 locomotives. As for the key West to Jacksonville/pensacola routes would be in phase 7 or 8. And how I would somehow negotiate a deal with the armed forces to rebuild the key West station and also tracks to the station and possibly reuse the old rail bridge. The Pensacola to key West route would also have a spur going down to everglade City. Also the two routes would be following the interstates system. (And what I mean a mix passenger train it's going to be part passenger and part freight)

That abandoned railroad bridge looks interesting. I wonder what it looked like when it was actually in use? Was there any way of getting to it from the other side? I just answered my own question by looking at the Google Maps hyperlink that you provided. The answer is NO. Did you do any exploring of the ROW on Google Maps? Take a look at the hyperlink and cancel the street view. Stay in the satellite view and go north from the bridge you videoed. About a half mile or so north of that location is an intact bridge over some water. You can follow the ROW up to almost Copeland, Florida. Just south of Copeland, where the ROW would have crossed Highway 29, the ROW is a paved road called Seaboard Village Drive. Most of the ROW up to Copeland, Florida looks like a trail. I could not figure out where the ROW was north of Copeland, Florida. However, there are power lines that go north from Copeland to Immokalee, Florida that could have been built parallel to the ACL ROW. Thank you for documenting this abandoned railroad bridge and for sharing this information with us!
@railrol82
@railrol82 3 жыл бұрын
You're quite the detective, Thomas. Most of the former ROW is now powerlines and getting to the other side of this bridge might be a very dangerous proposition. These waters are infested with gators, crocs, Burmese Pythons, and others! I don't want it to be the last video I film. Hope all is well. Thanks as always for the views and comments!

@@railrol82 as soon as I backed out the street view in the Google Maps hyperlink that you had in your comments and started going north along the old Atlantic Coast Line Right of Way, I realized that you would have a hard time getting on the other side of the abandoned bridge without a boat. When I look at a hyperlink that you put in your comments, I want to see what else is in the area. I am curious to see where the tracks go in each direction from the point where you were. It is fun to look around and see what else is in the area.
