Marie, Comet, and I visit our wall tent camp to practice some much needed bush skills and to have a mid spring-time overnighter.
We arrived at the camp and found it to be exactly how we had left it a few days early, fixed up and ready to be used. Our first task was to keep the meat we had brought with us cold. Since it was Spring and still fairly mild out, Marie decided to dig a small hole and pack it with the packages of meat and damp moss, which kept it just cold enough to not have to worry. After that was taken care of, our next task was to split some wood and get the fire going. Fitting with our theme of practicing some bush skills, to start the fire I made a brid's nest, and lit it using a flint and steel and some char cloth. That was my first flint and steel fire. Another small skill I wanted to work on was making and utilizing natural cordage. I decided the quickest thing to make would be a cordage called, "Cedar Withies". They turned out great after a few tries, but it definitely wasn't quick. I used them to hang my lantern on my tri-pod. Marie then got a fire going in the tent to warm it up for the night, and after we cooked some food outside on the fire. I prepared some lamb chops with my spice blend, some onion, mushroom, and some kale. It turned out great, and after we ate, Marie, Comet, and I went to sleep concluding day one. The next morning, we awoke to a beautiful sunny day, and immediately started cooking breakfast on the stove. Marie prepared some bacon and potatoes in the cast iron pan, and some oatmeal with some cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, sugar, and also some of last year's dried blue berries. After breakfast, I once again got the fire going outside in the pit as we let the one inside die off. This time I just used the standard birch bark and ferro-rod method to light it. In the mean-time well the fire was burning, Marie and I decided to relax and enjoy the day. She practiced some carving skills, and started herself a spoon, well I cleaned the camp up and organized our gear off camera. I then got to splitting more wood to store in the tent for the next time we would be around. I also got around to cleaning the Marlin. I gave it a good wipe down with what I had and I checked it for rust and anything else that may cause it problems. By this time, the day was getting late, and we were ready to head out. I check that the stove was out, and I doubt with what was left of the fire outside, and then Marie and I gathered our gear, threw our packs on our shoulders, and the three of us left the camp ending our trip on a high note. Overall it was an educational, comfortable, and an interesting trip for the three of us.
Enjoy the silent adventure.

Hi Nicolas, I aprieciate that you keep your content original. But maybe when you prep food, cooking food, the end result to use a headtorch just so we can see clearly and get a good aspect of the food you have prepared. I mean you be you and do it however you please but it is just a suggestion. Ps, Awesome vid

FootLoose Toucan That’s an issue I’ve been trying to focus on actually. It’s not as much the light source as it is my camera. It’s pretty much incapable of filming in lowlight without the video being extremely grainy and awful looking. It’s a battle between sharp and usable footage that is dark, or visible but grainy and awful looking footage. I’m planning on getting a new camera soon, which will allow me great quality and brightness in low light :)

great video, I spent over a decade and a half in Alaska doing this same thing. I never feel more comfortable and at home than in the wilderness. One thing I might suggest is hueing a log cutting surface for cutting your supper. Not only will it have a better aesthetic but it will also help keep your blades sharp longer.

I've been catching up on your video's since I subscribed just a few day's ago. I watched the one with your dad when you were at an old homestead before this one. I'm not going to call his name. There is a guy there in Canada that act's like he is a "bush-craft" super star. My friend, he has nothing on you. Watching you, I see someone that appears to live the life that you portray in your video's. I enjoy how that model 1895 is never far away. Here, I was thinking, damn, this is like reading a Louis L'amour book. By far one of the best bush-craft channel's going. I'm glad I "discovered" you. And, to top it all off, you have a beautiful lady, handle's herself well in the wood's, look's great in her hat, and doesn't talk much!!!! Life is damn good. Be well. Roger
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing! Welcome to the channel! I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about, and I appreciate the acknowledgment of being different. What I do in my videos is what my life is, and there is no "playing bushcraft" like some people like to claim I do. These skills I have are genuine requirement for me to succeed out here; especially since I moved to the Chilcotin. Just last week, it was a sawbuck build for the cabin, and after that, making raised beds. All the materials were gathered from the bush, and pretty much all of it required the skills I've learnt from the wilderness to be successful. My Instagram is a good insight into what I do day to day if you're interested. It's @wituiksrwl :). I'm very happy to hear you enjoy the channel and I hope to hear more from you in the future! P.S. Marie and her hat will be back soon! 👍🤠👊

Looks like everyone had an enjoyable, relaxing time. The weather didn’t look to extreme either. I’m guessing your camp is semi permanent. I hope your planning to add things to make it even more comfortable. Table of some kind, firewall, etc. Thanks for sharing. Of course, Comet is always a special treat to see her included. It might be a good idea for you make another light source of some kind or another for the tent so it could be a bit brighter when filming. Thank you and Marie for sharing your videos. ATB and stay well.

We sure did! It was a great time. I wish the weather was a bit more interesting if I'm honest. The next camping video I'm going to post has some better weather in it :). The camp is semi permanent. It's down now, but we plan to put it back up in fall, hopefully with improvements like the ones you've mentioned! The reason it was so dark was the camera I have. Unfortunately it is pretty much useless in low-light situations. I have my eye on a new one for the future though to fix that problem. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!

Your local home-hardware building center may have one. Unfortunately the model I have was only made once as a proof of concept and the ones that followed were cheap remakes of the original. Much worse quality, not as helpful or good looking, etc, etc. She will either be mad or find it funny that I compared her to a tool from home-hardware hahahaha

I like your videos but why do you guys look so serious in all your videos? I wish you guys talked to give more content to the videos.

Ray Haghighipour I’ve noticed that as well! I believe that’s just our natural facial expressions. It may be because we act as if the camera isn’t there, not as if it’s there and we have to act super happy and spastic like some KZfaqr’s do. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just not my personality to do that, even if it’s more enjoyable to watch. I have been working on leaving in more of the talking we do however! It’s just a habit to be quiet after 55 videos haha
