☺ ABOUT THIS SERIES
In this series the Royal Enfield Himalayan is ridden roughly 2,000 miles (3,219km) to the northern coast of Alaska to the infamous Prudhoe Bay and neighboring Deadhorse, AK. At 70°N latitude, the "Top of Alaska" can be an unforgiving place, especially in late-summer and early fall when the weather abruptly shifts as the seasons fight for dominance. Winter of course always prevails over summer and fall. Snow, slush and ice were in fact on the itinerary for this adventurous trip.
As my first "true" motorcycle adventure, complete with hundreds of miles of gravel and mud, both the Himalayan and I were pushed to some limits, if only briefly.
Join the ride and see for yourself how the Royal Enfield Himalayan holds up to a first-ever attempt at reaching Prudhoe Bay, one of the most northerly area accessible by road in the world. Expect to see some wonderful scenery, spectacular wildlife, and many friendly faces as the adventure unfolds.
I'd like to say a special thank you to ‪@MoskoMoto‬ for helping me outfit my Himalayan with their adventure gear that truly sets the standard for soft motorcycle luggage and equipment. You guys are the best! Thanks so much!

That sure looked like some miserable riding conditions for a while. I remember one trip where I rode my KZ1000 from Wasilla to Talkeetna one time back in the late 70's. I was so cold I had to stop in a pull-off on the return trip and jog back and forth the length of the pull-off until I generated enough body heat to warm back up. This video here brought back those memories for me. Shear misery but yet it was awesome in some ways as well. I am now back on two wheels once again after about 40 years, with a new Himalayan. It sure is good to be back on two wheels again. I didn't realize how much I missed it. I stopped in your town briefly to fill up with gas a week or so ago.

Just found your channel. Great videos. I came across a used Himalayan last week. Bought it. Same color and year as yours. Like what you did with exhaust. How's exhaust holding up the last 3 years ? Thanks again for great videos 😊
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The exhaust looks great. That stuff is amazing. My pannier on that side rubbed a small spot through the ceramic at the very highest point of the end of the exhaust. Not too noticeable. Also, I found that once you get some mud baked onto the exhaust, you don't want to scrub on it too hard for fear of ruining the ceramic finish. So I had to be more gently when clean. If it was still just stainless steal, I would have used something more abrasive and been able too clean mud off more easily. And up high, between the exhaust and the engine, where the exhaust is hottest, a very thin residue from mud still remains. You really don't see it. If you're not planning to ride in mud all day, it's not a worry. If you do expect mud to get baked on... either take opportunities while riding to wash it off more quickly, or expect to put a little more time into cleaning when home. I guess I'd say overall I'm still pleased with the ceramic coating. It held up really well. No fading. Enjoy that Himalayan of yours! Where will you be riding it most often?

Great to see you back! Did you have any issues with the 35L panniers (kzfaq.info) coming in contact with your exhaust?
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 2 жыл бұрын
In the beginning of the trip I had attached some folded up aluminum foil to the bottom of the right pannier to guard against heat. Eventually that foil disappeared. The pannier never melted. It did rub on the very top of the exhaust just a little. Due to having a little mud and grit between the pannier and exhaust it rubbed a little spot through the ceramic coating. They were mounted up pretty high to keep from contacting the exhaust much. Overall I didn't end up with any major problem. I can't recall if they could have been mounted even higher.

Well this has been a very long wait, I only checked a day or so back to make sure youtube hadn't switched off notifications. I thought I had it bad coming home from the bike meet tonight in light summer rain. kzfaq.info

Well, light rain has been known to ruin more than a few people's days when I comes to motorcycling. But yeah, I'll take a light rain over freezing rain any time! 🥶

Great video. Did you need to make any adjustments to the Mosko Moto ( kzfaq.info ) harness to fit the panniers on the Himalayan? I am plannig to buy the 25L Pannier kit for my Himalayan and we have the stock luggage rack. Best from Iceland.
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 2 жыл бұрын
There's no harness for those panniers. There's a solid mounting plate. I think they call it a puck. Two plates mount with hardware to each side of the pannier/luggage rack. They use a U-shaped bracket with bolts, 2 at on the top bar of the rack and 2 on the bottom. However, on my bike there was a catch... The rear rack comes around the sides of the pillion seat, below the seat, and forms handles. Also a good handle to pull the bike up on the center stand. Those handles angle outward a little. At that bend, where I pillion might grab, the bend is close to the pannier rack. On one side of the bike there was plenty of room for both of the 2 top U brackets for the Mosko mounting plate. So the plate uses 4 total. Again, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. But on the other side, that bend in the pillion handle was a little closer, by like 4mm, and I could only fit 1 of the U brackets, for a total of 3. I did my entire trip with 3 brackets and there was no issue. If I was to take my missing bracket and grind it a little, it would fit in place, but I didn't feel it was necessary. I carried it as a spare in case the 1 top bracket broke or something. Just to be clear, this was not an issue with the Mosko Moto pannier mounting hardware. This was an issue with the RE pannier racks not being 100 perfect on both sides. One side was just a bit close to the pillion grab handle area. Nothing to be too worried about, and I loved the Mosko Moto system. They have upgrades panniers now, of course. Thanks for the great question! Cheers! 🍻

@@jmatley Yes it did. I own 2 RE Himalayans both with stock RE Luggage Racks. If I remember correctly then I saw a video last year of someone cutting into the MM puck to fit it on the rack. I was just wondering how you would tackle it, if is was a "problem" or not. Obviously you solved it ;)

Great video, Justin! Glad to see another uploaded, I just checked your channel the other week to see if a new episode had surfaced yet. I love the scenery and I think the Himalayan looks better with a bit of mud or dirt on it, lol. BTW, this is Sandi_MTGal, I changed my account name. :-) Also like your donut carrier idea, always good to have items that are dual purpose. Can't wait to watch the next one. @moto

I knew who it was straight away. 🙂 Thanks for hanging in there with me. Working on part 7 right now. P6 gave me a lot of trouble. Couldn't use my helmet cam much due to weather. Only used it in hand a few times until it quit working all together with a bit of mud stuck in the power button. Also didn't record better audio with an external mic, and had to deal with all that wind noise on the GoPro. P7 should be easier. I used the 360 camera and my Nikon DSLR more often. We'll see soon enough how it all comes together. Hope you're enjoying that Big Sky Spring!
