With Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro combined blockbuster action with visual worldbuilding, and this includes sumptuous, thoughtful costumes.
It's way more than Kaiju and robot explosions. It's a feast for the eyes.
Let's go Behind the Seams!

two things: first of all, the obvious signs of wear on Raleigh and Yancy's armor as they suit up for the fight is one of the immediate costume touches that always hooks me. second, the use of the Red Shoe. we get three different uses of it - first Stacker hands Mako the real physical shoe (which we as viewers have no idea of the true significance of just then) when he tells her that she can be a pilot. next, when Mako first goes out of allignment, what triggers the full flashback is her finding a red shoe in her mindspace. then we get the full flashback and we understand the full significance of the shoe all along, and then the further reveal of Stacker Pentecost as the Jaeger pilot who saved her... it's just soooooo good

When I saw this in theatres, I originally thougt Little Mako's outfit was a weird nod to Dorothy Gale. Then I read a comment by Del Toro that the shoes were red so that when Mako and Stacker first meet, she's essentially "holding her heart in her hand." It's sad that all the attention to detail and unique touches that Del Toro put in this movie were completely stripped out of the sequel. God, that shot of G***y Danger swinging the ocean liner like a bat reminds me of how truly thrilling and easy to follow the action sequences in this movie are.

Yeah, the sequel is enjoyable but it really does lack that same sense of panache.

I think Uprising is held together solely by the strength of John Boyega’s performance, but that still makes it a pretty enjoyable time

There's a famous Japanese song called Akai Kutsu (The Red Shoes) about a little girl whose mother entrusted her to a missionary couple so she could be taken away from their hard life in Hokkaido to live a happy life in America. In reality, she was turned away at the docks because she was showing signs of TB, and she was sent to live in an orphanage in Tokyo, where she died alone soon after. Her mother spent her whole life thinking that her daughter was alive and happy in America. Red shoes are visual shorthand for adopted kids and tragedy.

Pacific Rim might be one of my favourite movies, I always wished we got more out of the background characters like the pilots of Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon but you're right that a lot of it is down to the great costume and design work that fuels wanting more from even mostly background characters

yeah, i think the fact that we care about those characters at all is a testament to the design work!

Huge fan of Del Toro and this franchise deserved so much better treatment from the Studio. However I could really see Del Toro expanding his relationship with Netflix to everyones benefit.

Love this movie. Thanks for diving into the details and hinting that it could be a franchise like Star Wars. I can only dream
