This year, in 2019, Switzerland's parliament will be voting on whether to make same-sex marriage legal. So we asked the Swiss how they felt about it!

Cette année, en 2019, le Parlement suisse va élaborer un projet de loi qui pourrait légaliser le mariage pour tous. Du coup, on a demandé aux Suisses ce qu'ils en pensaient!

@Theme Fresh The people who don't get married don't get married because they either don't want to (a choice), they can't find a suitable partner (forced marriage would be in violation of the other person's right thus not valid), or they are too young to consent. Other than that marriage is a right, and banning gay marriage would be discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and also sex (if man A and woman B want to marry woman C, but only Man A can marry her because he is a man and B is not, that is discrimination on the basis of sex/gender) Marriage is recognised in the international declaration of human rights, so is anti-discrimination before the law on the basis of sex. If marriage cannot be banned for straight people, it ought not be banned for gay people
@SandyTheDesertFox
@SandyTheDesertFox 4 жыл бұрын
@Theme Fresh I'd also like to add, human rights are simply agreements between people. If we all got together and decided french fries were a human right they totally could be. I think in a legal sense the concept of human rights is certainly useful to prevent say unlawful executions, but just because something in not recognised as a right does not make it unneccesary or immoral.

That wasnt his point. He meant that marriage is for starting a family, hence having kids. If you just want to spend your life together as partners, thats what partnership is for. Still doesnt make sense, because in that case straight couples who dont want kids shouldnt marry either and partnership and marriage are pretty much the same things, just that people always striving for a fancier name. P.s. I am pro gay marriage and adoption 100%. Just wanted to point some things out.
@RhythmAddictedState
@RhythmAddictedState 4 жыл бұрын
@@pppLT19 My point is: obviously, when you only want a childless union, then there's no difference between marriage and union. But the reason why so many gay people want marriage is because they want to adopt/have a child or have the benefits that come with marriage. I personally think homosexual people should have that right. Why shouldn't they? And also, whether gay people have that right or not doesn't have any impact on married heterosexuals, so I don't understand why people would be against it. Thing is, one cannot decide what is necessary for other people.

FireyKitten Being Swiss is a nationality, not ethnicity. It’s similar to us in Britain: we have English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish (and Cornish as well if you consider it a group). Each hold a distinctive language and cultural-historical background, but we are all British nationals. Being British isn’t an ethnicity since it is a title unifying the separate peoples of the British isles (including Northern Ireland) into a confederacy under the same national identity with cultural and historical significance. The same goes for Switzerland, which is a confederation of separate people-groups unified together under a single nationality, not ethnicity.
@fireykitten9217

@@NewNicator Well it's not really like that. There are cantons/places that speak 2 languages. Ethnicity is as far as I read, a group of people who identify with each other, we have mostly same ancestry, history, society, our culture etc. The difference are the languages. The rest we share. And NO ONE who is swiss does not matter what language (dialekt) we speak is german, french, italian etc. The cantons have been together/having same rules etc. From 1291 on.

See, this is the problem with today's pro-gay activism in the West (since an overwhelming majority of supporters of the LGBT movement are 100% straight and regard their gender identity as either male or female with no in-betweens): it has devolved into a nationalism-driven race to the top of social liberalism. Americans say, we are the most progressive, we created the sexual revolution! Canadians say, BS, you elected Trump, you guys are gay-hating Christian bigots! British say, we have the first gay minister in the world so we're the best! French say, oh yeah, try the first _transgender_ minister! And so on, and so forth... Is this really how society should move forward? By staring into Wikipedia maps that display your country in light blue, meaning that it shamefully has yet to legalize gay marriage or whatever, and then make decisions based upon it? Pushing legislation because you're embarassed you don't have it while others do? Where is the place for the actual gay people who live in your country? How do they feel about all this? Do you even know any of them? Or is it just the prospect of international embarassment that drives you?

@@yarpen26 What is bad about equality for LGBT people? You seem to have a problem with it to begin with.
@yarpen26
@yarpen26 4 жыл бұрын
@@hockneyfication I seem to have a problem with legislation being adopted just to conform to patterns that are established abroad in some particularly influential country. And why? Primarily because this kind of "equality" is shallow and easily reversible. It isn't based on any grassroot effort at educating people, encouraging them to be more accepting because maybe someone close to them really needs that. No. It's just "the Americans/Germans/Irish do it and we're lagging behind, I'm ashamed to be Swiss". This mindset is toxic, it feeds on the deeply entrenched insecurities and inferiority complexes. It's what destroyed the otherwise growing LGBT acceptance across the former Eastern Bloc: the insistence that you _have_ to be 100% dedicated to expanding gay rights if you want to even be considered European (pronounced more often than not by politicians hailing from countries which had literally just decided that gay-hunting might be wrong themselves). Nowadays, it's just part of a big ideological "packet": you support gay marriage, therefore you also support Third World immigration, you are a feminist and anti-racist, you propose measures to limit the climate change and you are an Europhile-and the other way around. Can you be an Eurosceptic homosexual? Only theoretically as in practice you will find almost no venues that support such an unorthodox combination. That's what kills the movement across the region: it's inextricably linked with other, supposedly independent political stances. So even if you have nothing against gay people but you also are no fan of Islam, you are, more often than not, alone. And people don't like being alone and they will naturally gravitate towards one of the major camps: they might renounce their homosexuality in favor or an anti-Muslim crusade or they might forgo their anti-Muslim bias and embrace gay marriage. Had Margaret Thatcher's infamous campaign been condemned by the French or the European Commission (rather than just plain ignored by everybody outside the UK), British gay people would have been branded an international fifth column and their acceptance would stagnate, possibly for decades to come. And, finally, tell me: what happens when things turn around in the countries you now hold as your role model? Let's say they start killing gay people in Canada-what happens in Switzerland then? You imitated them before and since in the process you didn't develop any actual understanding of the gay people's situation (and just wanted to quench your national inferiority complex), what's there to stop you from raising the pitchforks and going after the damn homos yourself? You don't want to lag behind now-and you probably won't like lagging behind then either.

@@yarpen26 Umm sorry to break the news to you, but we do not imitate anyone, why do you think we do? We were among the first to decriminalise homosexuality in Europe. There were times when persecuted gay people from Berlin would come to Zurich to be able to live the way they are. Switzerland is fine with LGBT rights and it's good the way it is so what you are saying is mere fiction. Btw, I am very critical about immigration from Islamic countries and I know that many in the LGBT community are as well.

@@OprechtLetterlijkBizar I guess you are right. But what I meant is just overall the way of thinking. Keep in mind that in the US gay marriage didn't happen by a law being passed but by one extra vote in the Supreme Court. That wouldn't happen today with Trump's court . There is no law protecting gay rights yet and look at how people reacted. Almost nobody rejected the right to marry. Now go ask people in like 40 states if they would say the same thing
@OprechtLetterlijkBizar

Maria Esther Rivas ok. But as a person who lived both in the US and in Switzerland (currently) I can tell you that the extremes in the US are just further apart: you have extremely open minded regions and communities, and you have extremely conservative regions and communities. The US just is a huge country and therefore you cannot really compare it with a tiny country like Switzerland. Over here the extremes are closer together. In the US the left wing group is way more left and with many more than here in Switzerland, but the conservatives in the US are also with a far bigger group and their ideas are further right than the conservatives here in Switzerland. Population over here is more homogenous, but in the US it’s probably easier to find your ‘niche’ and your own ‘community’ and a sense of belonging, than it is here in Switzerland. And that’s a pity in my opinion.

You mean the eastern part. That is true generally speaking, not when it comes to homosexuality though. I‘m from Bern and if you ask the same questions, you‘ll get even more positive answers. The thing is, we live in a „mind your own business culture“, so we were never „hunted“ like in the US for instance. So we kind of forgot about it, as we are living savely and nobody really cares. Of course there are still annoying stereotypes ans missconceptions, but hey, if that‘s the worst we have to fear, so be it. It might be a bit different on the country side, but not in the Kanton of Bern. I love it here... I can kiss a man and nobody gives a shit.

Swiss french speaking people are well educated. I think, thats the reason of their tolerance. And I agree. Same-sex marriage will not make a big difference.
