I show and talk more or less briefly about: Blotch (by Blutch), Nach Paris / Revoir Paris Vol.2 (drawn by Francois Schuiten, written by Benoit Peeters), Corto Maltese, "Under the midnight sun" (drawn by Ruben Pellejero, written by Juan Diaz Canales), Ringo Vol.2 (drawn by William Vance), Little Tulip (drawn by Fr. Boucq, written by J.Charyn), Trigan (drawn by Don Lawrence), A mysterious melody (by Cosey), Zombies (drawn by Sophian Cholet, written by Olivier Peru), Die Druiden / the druids (drawn by Jacques Lamontagne, written by Jean-Luc Istin & Thierry Jigourel), Detektei Hardy / detective agency Hardy (drawn by Annie Goetzinger, written by Pierre Christin).
NBM has or will translate one book of Annie Goetzinger "A girl in Dior" or sth like that (I haven't read that one). "The Zombies" will be put out in an English translation in April by some unknown publisher. "Little Tulip" is available in English right now (from Dover) and I'm pretty sure that the 13th Corto Maltese will be as well sooner or later.

Excellent! I always like to see stuff that I hardly ever get to see. I bought a bunch of European comics in the early 1990s when Catalan and NBM brought them over but hardly any since.

Great video; we need more exposure to European comics. That Annie Goetzinger, art, for example, is amazing. Not heard of her before this :)

and she's around for a long time... some of her stuff dates back into the early 80s, maybe even earlier. What I like about her style is (as cheesy as it may sounds) the female quality of her drawings. You can see that a woman drew this, no man could or would draw like that. A bit similar to the art of Trina Robbins.

So many great books you showed there! Besides Trigan and Corto Maltese I didn't knew any of them, just saw some of the covers here and there. My card says I'm interested in 7 of them :P Would love to start collecting the Maltese Klassik-Edition by S&L but I missed out on the first volume and it's super expensive now.

the 13th Corto is my only one from S&L... the others I got and will get from IDW, beautiful books with nice paper (which was more important for me than to get the German translation instead), and I guess they're all still available. ... I made a video about them btw.

I didn't received a tag for your answer, sorry. Of course I watched your video for Maltese and that's also where I first heard about the IDW editions. I thought I'll go for S&L because they're Hardcover and releasing more often than it seems with IDW. But since the 1 is OOP I may go for the IDW now ..

The first sight I ever had of Philippe Druillet was in Graphis Magazine, a special issue on comics that was later expanded to a hardcover book, with Umberto Eco as one of the editors. Eco was known as a professor of art and writer on semiotics. Druillet eventually did poster art for The Name of the Rose, a wonderful film. I highly recommend Eco's semi-autobiographical novel The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, which is about an amnesiac rare book dealer who tries to reconstruct his memory by going back to his childhood entertainments, the comics and pulps he read as a kid in Mussolini's Italy. It's heavily illustrated with artifacts from the era, lovely old comics and lurid bizarre material that may be more familiar to European eyes than it was to me. It shows how even the most trivial art, if encountered when the soul hungers for escape, can grip you profoundly and never let go.

ah, Eco is one of the authors I always have wanted to read more of his stuff but never have come around to do it. I have read "the name of the rose" obviously and it's excellent. That Druillet connection is interesting.

I have to admit that I am no huge fan of the newer Mickey Comics. They are quite cringy in a way. But I adore Floyd Gottfredson. Have you ever seen these "Ich Mickey Mouse, Ich Donald Duck or something else books" that Melzer once published. They are damn recommendable. Huge oversized books with great artwork and a lot of history and background information. Each book does have really much information about the character as well. It's worth checking out and you can get'em for very cheap. And even if you don't like Mickey in such a format, there are still some barks stories. (Classics like "Lost in the Andes!").

Hello, Earl Grey. What a nice selection of books. One common point to most of them seems to be the time displaced or epoque scenario, which I'm always very fond of, especially when there's a true care put in the garments, machinery and what not. I'm looking forward to the Corto Maltese, the art seems extremely close to Pratt (the continuing of classic series by new authors can be such a hit or miss... I like Blake & Mortimer with art by Benoit but dislike it when drawn by Juillard) Little Tulip looks especially interesting. I wouldn´t call myself a hardcore Cosey fan, but i'm a fan nonetheless and the Mickey book seems very cool. Cheers Gus
@earlgrey862

yes, obviously I like comics that deal in/with a specific historic setting like you, even though I am a bit picky... and esp. "The druids" book did some mistakes in my opinion in trying to create a bigger than life scenario... some of the buildings and settings are too exaggerated to be close to any possible reality that could had ever been. As to Corto... I am sceptic with these continuations as well. I'm curios if this will read as good as it looks. And actually I'm no hardcore fan of Cosey neither... at least not anymore (there was a time when I considered Cosey to be my favorite comic artist, but that was pretty long ago). But like you, I'm still a fan enough to shell out 15 Euros for a (too) short bliss of nostalgic comic pleasure.

Nach means to? The first book looks very interesting. The zombie book looks interesting as well but as you said the colors don't look great. On another note I picked up the 25 cent issue of walking dead and I didn't know that was in black and white. I didn't like the look of it either.
@earlgrey862
@earlgrey862 7 жыл бұрын
"nach" means both: "to" as in "towards a place" or it can mean "after" in a chronological sense. The walking dead has been in black, white and grey from the beginning... with the exception of some special variant single issues in color. It took some time, but the art of Adlard has grown on me.

Are there any news on Peeters and Schuiten's next project? I'm dying to get my hands on more of their works after Revoir Paris tome 2. I have seven of their books so far. I think I might actually learn German for Trigan...there hasn't been an English reprint in years and the ones on Amazon literally go for a few hundred bucks!

For news about Sch.&P. you can maybe consult altaplana dot be. Ha! maybe go the whole way and learn Dutch instead to be able to read the original version of Trigan :) But seriously, the idea is not so absurd as it may seems. Buy maybe just one of the Splitter-editions of Storm or one of the Panini-editions of Trigan and see if you can enjoy the story just going by the pictures... especially the gist of an average Triganstory should be comprehensible without understanding any word.

My comment is not about one of the book you reviewed here. But I need your help in this. What is your thoughts on "Peter Pan " by Regis Loisel ? I read Peter Pan in single European albums, I've liked it so far, but never bought the last albums... I lost interest because they published it over some years and there were big breaks between them. It's a nice reimagining of the old story, some say it's an "adult" version, just because tinkerbell is drawn a bit sexier than usual, I don't know. I guess it depends on whether you like Loisel's fluid drawing style which never clicked with me 100% for whatever reasons, maybe it's even too perfect to the point of being a bit kitschy (but definitely not disney-kitschy)... but that's just me & since I'd read it a looong time ago: it's the me from almost three decades ago

@@earlgrey862 by underrated i mean, that the vast majority of comic readers especially in germany, just sticks to mainstream superheroes from Marvel and DC.. So it is a pleasure to watch videos from another german, who also reads or better presents more than the random comictuber, who talks about comics. No offense, i like Marvel aswell, that are my comic reading roots but there is quite a lot more, even besides the us independent stuff, what the comicworld can offer to a reader.

I like the art of Blutch and there are a couple of Blutch books I’d like to purchase, but the cover of one of them, So Long Tinseltown, just terrible. I refuse to buy it. The other book, Peplum, seems a bit strange in its narrative and I’ll probably purchase it at a sale price. The Schuiten Peeters book looks amazing. I hope Ringo eventually see an English version. Little Tulip’s artwork looks similar to Francois Boucq’s. Some of the Mysterious Melody outdoor panels remind me of Jeff Smith’s Bone Detektei Hardy art is beautiful. The paper sounds fantastic too!

The question of how long is taken on comics is interesting. Some of these books look beautiful, others the art seem stiff and over rendered, and maybe could have used a bit of demand for looseness of a "rushed" drawing...but maybe i'm just a prisoner of American style comics.
@earlgrey862
@earlgrey862 7 жыл бұрын
This stack was of course by no means a true cross section of European comics. It was rather a sample of stuff that I found interesting. For an example there's nothing of that looser franco-belgian "funny" stuff (which I am not too much a fan of... generally speaking... ). But yes, I can see the point, that some creators maybe want to achieve too much on one page.
@sleepyreader666
@sleepyreader666 7 жыл бұрын
Just pondering the issue of time taken on things...my observations based on glances at your video should be far from the final word. I think of the frequently coming out Brubaker and Philips comics such as the great Fade Out and the current Kill or be Killed and I wonder if giving the artist more time would be a good thing...and I'm uncertain...though I know I like getting the floppies on a frequent schedule. But another artist I really appreciate tremendously is Frank Quietly, who is very slow by english language comics' standards and I wouldn't want to break the magic by forcing him to keep up the "normal" production pace.... There's also a question of whether writers should take their time, if then they would avoid cliche and stock plot gimmicks more often...hmmm...
@earlgrey862
@earlgrey862 7 жыл бұрын
another thing is the economic pressure that builds up if one does only one comic per year or less. It simply HAS to be successful. And this pressure can lead to over-rendering (which you have adressed) or to unnecessary up-sexing (if that's an actual word) like in this book about the last days of the druids. I guess you wrote it in another comment a while ago: Having more time does not inevitably mean to have more freedom. Anyhow, the European comic publishers don't have actually the choice to speed up their production, because all in all the European comic market is very probably much smaller than the American one. And I'm really enjoying to come back to "my" European comics once in a while after indulging mainly in American comics the last couple of years.
@sleepyreader666
@sleepyreader666 7 жыл бұрын
I guess it was always breadth of subject matter and the larger album format that impressed me in my glimpses of European work--we've always been told that the French market is larger than the US one, though. In recent years the US/English language market seems to have expanded quite a bit in the breadth of subject matter--but the drive for a story that goes on forever has had some noticeable weaknesses, in some cases...
