Finally, some new Paralives news! The team just released a new video showing how you can freely shape your Parafolk using sliders - similar to the push/pull mechanism seen in The Sims 4 (but different because patents). I'm really excited about this, as it gives us a lot of options for customizing the appearance of our Paras.
I'm also discussing the Paralives art style. I've seen a lot of conflicting comments lately about this and I want to know what you think! I personally really like the style, but some people find it flat and cartoony. What's your opinion so far?

This cartoony, 3D model, line-art style is called Cell Shading! I've been putting this elsewhere, too, but it's a bold stylistic choice that tends to be a bit divisive and isn't well-known. I personally adore cell-shading, and the way Paralives is doing it looks so artsy, sweet, soft, and cozy. I really like the direction they're going with it, and it will age better than realistic graphics without losing realistic details like body hair and toenails by being too cartoony.

I generally like the new artstyle. It gives me big telltale game vibes, and I'm a big fan of the walking dead series. There was only one time where the style was really weird to me (it was a Patreon post, so I won't elaborate here) but obviously it's still in development and can still go through changes.

Same! I know some people like hyper-realistic graphics and they definitely have a place in certain games. But when it comes to life simulators where you control and watch characters, making them look super realistic makes me uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to manipulate sims/parafolk that look like they could be actual people...

I'm an old-school gamer. I partially grew up with pixel graphics, partially clunky 3D models that had vertices that you could count just by looking at them. I think most games today look stunning! The fact that "graphic nerds" want photorealism soo bad that they try to put it in Minecraft will always flabbergast me. Sometimes a distinctive artstyle has more to say than trying to imitate real life ever could. But that's just my naive artist point of view, I guess.

@@monarchmeow9256 A patent is only issued if the stuff to patent is not already there before. And lot of lawyers are paid a lot of money to check for that before a patent is applied for, because this costs quite some money as well. And patents doesn't mean that nobody is going to be able to use it, but they may have to pay royalty fees. And to know, what exactly is patented, you have to read the patent (and that language is hard). Maybe one specific way is patented, which does not apply to other games (you can't patent a goal, but only a way to reach it)
@suicune95
@suicune95 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair to the Sims Team, patent squatting is incredibly common and literally every company does it where they can. Like Nintendo patented their joycons, and not just the joycons we got. They’ve also got patents for joycons they never produced/never intend to produce such as extra wide versions, versions with hinges, standalone joycons, joycons with a stick and a d-pad on the same joycon, joycons with ONLY a D-pad, etc. it’s to prevent other companies from producing a device (or in the case of the sims team, software/system) even marginally similar to theirs so competitors can’t yoink their designs/code and churn out something to compete with them.

@@PedanticPig To be fair, you can probably imagine that if an indie dev put in a large amount of work to create a really cool feature, they wouldn't want a big company like EA to be able to immediately take it and use it, most likely ending with them not getting any reward for their years of work, because EA has better publicity. The better question is whether they should be allowed exclusive right to it for 20 years.

Nah its not your age lol, I was born in 90 and seen lots of bad graphic too, but still I am extremely picky when it comes to graphic in games, actually its graphics, frame rate (I cant play a game with constant lag... like the sims 3 when I was younger playing it on a bad pc lol ) and also the customizations (characters/homes), then gameplay options. The rest I can imagine in my head. Thats why every time I see the sims team fixing gameplay issues, im like where are the graphics fixes? Those gameplay issue I can get around those, bypass them ingame, or put a cheat code in, but graphic issues, like pixelated grass, saturated trees or pixelated artifacts on objects or clothes, are extremely annoying to me because no matter what, there are part of the world you play in and there is no way around those, but because its not ''functional'' issue, they get tossed asside for gameplay bug fixes... :( Rare are the time we get visual fixes.

I personally love this art style, its very refreshing. As I understood it the Paralives team will keep the game open for modding, so I guess, there will be very talented people who will make mods for such a thing, if the gameplay is good. I mean, i also play the elders scrolls skyrim and you can give the whole game a new 2021 graphic look, so this might be possible with paralives as well. But for me the style is totally fine, i love it, especially the shadows in the textures, I think it gives them depth.

I get that this artstyle isn't to appealing for some, I needed some time to get used to the lineart, but for an indie company, this is the best thing you can do especially for a custom model that can be modified! I think they made a perfect alternative to the drag/pull tool with these kind of sliders. it's stupid that EA has Patent on that, it would be so useful for game development.

I've seen a lot of these "that's stupid comments." The push/pull with zoom would have taken at least a year in development-so saying other games should have that right (aka, basically lifting some of the code) is crazy to me. It's pretty standard in the gaming industry to patent something like this, especially if it was a main selling feature for a title.

@@SnazzyArcade Sliders could've been a patent too then, amongst many other features, which would eventually leave out any form of in-depth character customization for new games. While certain features would make sense being protected, ts4s pull and drag feature seems weird to deny new developers access to, as it is the most natural and convenient way of character creation. It's pretty much based on how you build characters in 3d modeling programs. Same thing with Adobe who has patents on dragging and snapping images, like come on! Pass on your wisdom so everyone can grow. (But I guess that's the opposite purpose of it)
@SnazzyArcade
@SnazzyArcade 2 жыл бұрын
@@Batkin_Art Nah sliders have been around far longer than The Sims. You're ignoring that the specific grab and pull feature was a) part of the main marketing of the game, and b) again, took a year of development time. It was not easy to create. I don't see why any other company has the right to that IP. Mass Effect's dialogue wheel is patented, the Nemesis system in the middle-earth games, etc. People forget that it's not some faceless corp that works on these features-these are actual people who put a LOT of work into development. Imagine if someone were to rip off Paralives art style, would you think that was fair? Probably not. Intellectual property is just as important as creative property.

As someone who typically favours realistic styles, the cell shading art style is imo a fantastic choice. It really lies on the edge of realism and cartoony and allows for emphasis on features and shapes. The one criticism I had for the older art style was that features were sometimes difficult to see, and moving towards cell shading really allows them to pop and stand out.

This looks so much more intuitive than TS4, and an improvement on the average slider overall. I love that the sliders show exactly where and in what direction they change, rather than leaving it up to guess work or esoteric naming of the sliders. I'm glad that they weren't able to implement click-and-drag, I think it created a far better and more creative result. (Also, if I remember correctly, I think Fallout 4 has a similar click-and-drag/sculpting character creation.) As character customization is generally one of my favourite parts of any game, this has me even more excited! As for the art style, I'm a sucker for cute, cartoony graphics while still maintaining realism (which is why I prefer the TS2/TS4 art styles as opposed to the uncanny valley of TS3 or alpha); as such, I really like the art style so far! Plus, I think it'll age better as time goes on, as super "realistic" graphics in other games tend to age like milk, especially as newer and better graphics come along. Overall, I'm a big fan so far and I'm super stoked!

What's most important is gameplay, what the game looks like can be changed much more easily than gameplay, that's why Sims 4 is doing poorly.

I LOVE the all the sliders for the ParaMaker. You can make very diverse bodies, with posture and all sorts of sliders and modifiers that truly look unique and realistic (in the Para that they showed off, at least). I also like the art a lot. I especially like the blushing and simple shading, it really really looks like a drawing and it's beautiful! Of course it's not for everyone, art is subjective and we're used to TS4's aesthetic, but I'm personally a big fan of how this looks.

i love this bc it's a lot more visible to me what exactly is being changed. i'm specifically thrilled with the nose tip controls - i've never been able to make my nose nor my partner's very well in sims, specifically because the nose tip is linked to the bridge and nostrils both (if you want the tip to point down, you have to either have a hooked nose or move nostrils way up high). but that nose tip control grid thing looks like it could be more accurate than ts4 without much effort at all, and i think probably with practice and patience i could get close to perfect. i was already excited for paralives but this just adds to it.

As a visdev artist, I adore the art style in paralives. I think more stylized and unique styles makes the game feel so refreshing. I also appreciate how they've tweaked and improved the models and style. I also feel like this slider system is so nice. I feel like sometimes pushing and pulling directly on the body can sometimes be prone to glitchiness, and these sliders feel so smooth and natural. I'm so excited to watch this game continue to evolve omg

The main issue I have with the graphics of the paras is that I don't think they match the build style too well. I don't dislike the style and I'm (more than) happy with the dynamic hair and it's pleasing to see the sliders. But the painterly style I'm not so sure about but if we can bring in CC skins, I'm sure we'll see some different styles. It's a long way from a deal breaker for me though - as you say, if gameplay is good it will trump that without problem. Also, I do like the build stuff I've seen. Great. Ooo yes, to add, a good genetics system is a definite winner.

I sort of have to agree, I don't care too much for the art style myself, however it doesn't mean the game won't be fun. I wish there would be an option to switch between art styles perhaps? Like using shaders or something? I don't know lol I'm still supporting them because I feel it has a lot of potential.

One thing that should be noted art style wise is that the character model in the slider video and in the Christmas outfit video where Maggie is in the white sweater, THOSE are the models that will be in the game (or at least the newest versions). The model they tested the hair physics on is not how Paras will look in game. I understand the confusion, but everyone should focus on the slider video and Christmas outfit video for references to what the graphics will look like. That being said, I LOVE these graphics.

I like the style. I think the "meet Sebastian" art style is still my favorite though, but this new art style is also very pretty. I think some people like it more simplistic and minimalist for being pleasant to the eyes, too much detail can be too much information, but I like them both. For me they should stick with any of it.

i think artstyle definitely just comes down to personal preference, honestly i'm down with anything as long as the gameplay is good but the current artstyles that the paralives team have been trying out are really pretty and fit the aesthetic of the game perfectly. if players want a different look for the game, realistic cc and mods and other stuff will most likely be available to add. also the simplistic look of the game will be really beneficial for people running it on lower end pcs and laptops, which i think is one of paralives' main goals for it too

I just knew cindy would love the hair jiggle on parafolk, it looks really sims-2 inspired, also im glad hair has phisics instead of being just a static prop on the character, some long hairstyles in sims 4 have this weird thing where they get really strange when a sim changes position, almost like its glued to the sim's spine or something.

i was one of those people kind of worried of what the paras would look like when the game was first announced, and i have to say that i adore how far theyve gotten with its concepts! maggie has always looked adorable and i do prefer this version of para-making than a full on push-and-pull system. graphics has never been a selling point of mine, as gameplay is more important, but these graphics are unique and i believe theyll hold up better over time opposed to super realistic ones. the little details are great and ties it all together pretty neatly :) cant wait to FINALLY give my female paras body hair as well

I don't know how I haven't noticed until now but WOW Cindy you have some nice ass eyebrows!! I'm jealous 🤣 IMO I really am liking the Paralives art style, and I'm not just saying that because it's an indie game. People go easy on indie developers sometimes which definitely isn't a good thing. The only time we should treat indie devs differently is in production speed, the smaller the team the longer things will take. Anyways, I think the art style is quite easy on the eyes. My personal preference for life simulation games is always not too cartoony, but not too realistic either. And I think Paralives does this perfectly. The hand-drawn aspect is unique and original, and it's something you don't often see in this genre. I think it has improved since the Meet Sebastian video for sure!

I feel the animation style is more of a comic book feel. I see the popularity of "Comic fans" getting great use from this. If you think Sims is big, imagine all the comic characters fans creating and telling their own stories and the comic-like memes that will follow. I'm sold!

I’m genuinely glad pushing/pulling on the actual para is patented because it is the thing I hate most about TS4 CAS to the point where it makes it unusable as far as I’m concerned. I’ve always found TS3 CAS easier to use because you can find all the sliders (if you dig around for them 😂) and you have a visual representation of the extremes so you have a better idea of where average is. The other thing about clicking and dragging on the actual sim is I feel like I can’t see what I’ve done unless I let go of sim and move my mouse out of the way first. 😣

I agree with that one person in the comments about the penciled white highlights. It doesn't look too bad on the guy in the paramaker but it's way more obvious on Maggie with her skintone and looks off - I can only imagine how it would look on a para with a darker complexion. Really hope they remove at least some of the lines, adjust them per skintone, or have them be an optional overlay in future versions. Besides that I really enjoy the art style!
